Milton Friedman suggested that we have concumer choices of flights with varying amounts of security, with passengers chosing the amount of risk they want to take and the commensurate fare.

My contacts tell me there is are quite a lot of ex millitary working as TSA officers—they do it as a part time gig after retirement.

Now I’m curious as to the percentages.

many security experts have urged TSA to adopt techniques, used with great success by the Israeli airline El Al, in which passengers are observed, profiled, and most importantly, questioned before boarding planes.

The problem with that is of the 67,000 TSA employees, 66,000 would have to be fired because they are too stupid to do the job effectively.

Tread lightly on this one, folks. All it takes is one terrorist with a bomb to get through security and blow up an airliner full of men, women and children.

Yesterday somebody posted a vidoe where a bunch of germans showed up at an airport in their underwear. Which begs the question; why are they objecting to a nude scan by going to an airport essentially nude? I mean, doesn’t it defeat the purpose? ?=)

Great. It’ll be interesting when the first terrorist hits an opt-out airport.

“The Israelis don’t have that fatal hindrance. And unless there is an immediate end to PC in the United States, it’s only a pipe dream for fantasists.”

Could this issue be the domino that starts the fall? Will enough people understand that their safety while flying (and since we're talking AA, police officers and fire fighters have to be included) is being corrupted by AA?

IIRC, I posted a few years back that a family friend who was a fireman in the Boston area retired as soon as he could ~12/14 years ago. Why? Not to stop working, but he was scared for his personal safety because of the wave of AA hires that he had to work with. Most that were hired were incompetent, period. Gee, I feel so safe.../s

Isn’t this what we wish we had in place on 9/10?

Milton Friedman suggested that we have concumer choices of flights with varying amounts of security, with passengers chosing the amount of risk they want to take and the commensurate fare.

I suggest that you flesh that out more in another post.

One detail to consider, and a potential cost to the hypothetical airline involved. If there is an option that provides for no airport security whatsoever, pre-DB Cooper, then there will be a need for fighter jets to patrol the skies everywhere they fly.

My guess: The red box on the right is most likely a wallet. The box on the left is something in a side pocket.

This will not be the domino that begins the end of PC. If anything, a relaxation of airport security will inevitably lead to another airline-based terrorist success that makes the advocates look silly, and that will discredit them forever. That is the risk the tea party is taking: forfeiture of their core issues at the expense of willingness to go thru one machine but not another.

Silly. Trivial. Suicidal.

And yet daily, thousands of airport employees and workers routinely enter and leave the airport grounds without going through any or just perfunctorily screening. They are able to bring in or take out damn near anything imaginable. TSA is another giant government boondoggle and power grab.

Does Friedman have a plan for those of us who don't want a hi-jacked airliner from one of these low-cost, low-security airports killing us or our love ones? Or would we get coupons for future flights?

As long as the costs for security are not solely borne by the states or local governments, an opt out could also save money. Private contractors would less likely be unionized unlike the TSA. And of course government union workers are invariably ardent Dem supporters.
Think of the marketing advantage for a hub airline or airport. We won’t sexually assault you or your children on your trip if you fly with __________ airline at ________ airport.

Most government agencies have a handful of people who are supercompetent to cover for armies of drones who couldn’t find their bare butt in the dark with both hands.
