Obama names anti-gun extremist as next BATFE head
St Louis Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 16 November, 2010 | Kurt Hoffman

Posted on 11/18/2010 4:33:03 AM PST by marktwain

Well, it's official (if misspelled, in the New York Times)--Andrew Traver is President Obama's choice to be the BATFE's next Supreme Leader:

Nearly two years into his term, President Obama on Monday finally chose a director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Mr. Obama will submit the name of Andrew Taver [sic], the special agent in charge of the bureau’s Chicago field division, to the Senate for consideration, the White House said.

This, no doubt, will immensely please the Brady Campaign, who will probably try to imply that it was their complaining--and complaining (pdf file)--that inspired this action.

That Traver's would be the name eventually submitted has been suspected for months, with the first (to my knowledge) to bring up the possibility being Mike Vanderboegh, back in early July. In that post, Mr. Vanderboegh documented some of Traver's hostility to the right to keep and bear arms:

But there is more to Traver than selfless service to his community. He is an anti-firearm rights zealot. He is on record as opposing so-called "assault rifles" in the hands of citizens. Worse, he is a prominent member of the virulently anti-firearm International Association of Chiefs of Police.

The NBC Chicago "news" story in which Traver expresses his opposition to private ownership of so-called "assault weapons" is something, it turns out, that I have discussed before, as has National Gun Rights Examiner David Codrea (video of that story can be seen to the left). One of my favorite parts of the NBC piece was this:

Traver says the power and randomness of the heavy caliber, military-style weapons make them so dangerous not only to people, but to police.

I hope everyone has taken the two year respite in his anti gun campaign to stock up because this asshat is definitely on a mission.

Being a true believer in the rights of the government to control my actions, sarcasm, I fully expect to comply with any move on my firearms with the previso they can have them, ammunition first.

This is the first step in (o)bama’s campaign to slap down the populace has they have dared to push back on his over all agenda. Expect more to come.

Is this a confirmation that will be rammed thru in the lame-duck or will they wait until the real Senate is seated?

What are the chances Barry has never had a firearm of any type in his hands?

I don't remember even a token "Look, I'm all for the 2nd Amendment" while campaigning.

The lame duck session Republicans should filibuster EVERYTHING other than extending ALL of Bush’s tax cuts (make them permanent), passing a budget (or continuing resolution which the next congress will correct) and investigating Obama’s status as a natural born citizen. Nothing else matters.

Is this part of his “move towards the center?”

We have stalled the Obama agenda. Now we must destroy it in detail and scatter its ashes at a crossroads.

“Only Guns and Money” has been ahead of the curve on Traver. They have been following him for some time, now. Good backgrounder and research.
Who would have guessed the connection to Obama would be shared values through the rabid anti-gun Joyce Foundation? /sarc

This guy has to be confirmed by the Senate, but all that means is that Mullah Hussein will recess appoint him and get him started, then sometime in the next year the Senate will get around to holding confirmation hearings.

That’s not how things are supposed to work, but that’s exactly how things are going these days.

Checks and Balances?? He don’t need no steenking Checks and Balances...

Thank you.

Randomness? That applies best to when the cops are shooting at something.

Yeah if you haven’t used this 2 year gun control lull to get some good weapons and plenty of ammo, you’re wrong. Better start doing it now because I’m sure in the next couple of years, if this guy gets approved, we’ll see more panicked ammunition rushes and subsequent shortages and price hikes like we did during the presidential elections. It certainly ain’t getting any cheaper.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. It's almost as if they intentionally created a single government agency to control three things the federal government has NO BUSINESS involving itself with.

You want to cut the budget, how about starting right there, right now?

True enough; I’m assuming that he’s an asshat who has never fired the .50 cal M-2... I have, and it ISN’T random at all.

Why I like where I live in Texas.

A friend of mine rolls through a stop sign not far from his house and gets pulled over.

As required he hands the young cop his license and CHL. This is the conversation:

Cop: (Looking at his license and CHL) Sir, I pulled you over because you failed to stop at that stop sign. Do you have any weapons in your vehicle?

Friend: Yes Officer.

Cop: Sir, would you mind telling me where they are?

Friend: No problem Officer. There's a Glock 21 in the center console, a Walther P99 in the door compartment, a Ruger Mini-30 under the towel in the back seat and a Mossberg 500 in the jack compartment.

Cop: Sir, are any of the these firearms loaded?

Friend: Yes Officer, all of them are loaded.

Cop: Those are some pretty nice weapons. I'm not too crazy about the Walther. The de-cocker on top is hard to get used to if you carry a SIG 226 as your service weapon.

Friend: Yeah, it is a little clumsy to get your thumb up there if you're not used to it.

Cop: (Handing the IDs back) Come to a full stop next time, OK?

Friend: Yes officer. And my friend drives away.

Another strange tidbit. The city in which my friend lives was chosen by Forbes in 2010 as the safest city in America with a population over 150,000.

The most dangerous street in America is in South Chicago where reportedly you have a 25% chance of being mugged when walking 3 blocks. This area has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation.

It does not take a Harvard grad to put two and two together.

Actually they aren't, at least not the voters. There are a considerable number of pro-gun Democrats, and an even larger percentage for whom it isn't a high priority issue one way or the other.

Gun control laws have not been popular, and have played a significant role in Democrat politicians losing their offices. Pro gun Democrats have done well in many parts of the country. It is probably the main thing that got Strickland elected as Governor here in Ohio. If he wasn't so extremely liberal on everything else he probably would have gotten reelected.

The anti-gun lobby is small, but very powerful. It doesn't have a lot of members, just a lot of money, and a lot of followers in the press.

I got all the ammo I every will need. On this news I have decided to apply for my state “Powder Monkey” license. That way I can build a small bunker in which to store my dynamite I use for taking out tree stumps on my property.

Its great to take out those stumps with explosives, beats paying for a dozer to come and do it. We pile them up and burn them.
