WASHINGTON – Republicans in the House have blocked a bill that would have extended jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed beyond the holiday season.

The most recent extension of jobless benefits expires Dec. 1. Two million people will lose benefits averaging $310 a week nationwide by the end of the year.

So, rake leaves, mow lawns, work at McDonald's.

you lack grace... it's not easy to get a job at McDonald's these days... and because of the poor economy, people are raking their own leaves and mowing their own lawns... sometimes people go through tough times "legitimately..." let him voice his frustrations... he doesn't need to hear your judgment of him... he's applied to 200 jobs... i'm sure some of those must have been to places like Taco Bell and Home Depot... you don't have to wish him extended unemployment benefits, but you don't have to be so cruel about it...

2 plus years into this, we have a rapidly decelerating economy.

Doing away with unemployment benefits will probably take away another half a percentage point or so from “growth”. I am not crying about it, as I am relatively prepared, but honestly cannot believe how some do not realize how bad it is if the “last legs” so to speak and kicked out, and people are now forced onto welfare.

Unemployment benefits are not a great option, but the ideas of many here are far worse (at least for the economy).

People have already cut back on spending. If workers now think there is no safety net for them should they lose their jobs, they will cut back even more, thus hurting the economy and the national psyche. Bank on it.

“Doing away with unemployment benefits will probably take away another half a percentage point or so from ‘growth’”.

Depends if you believe that pervert, Keynes ...

... or if you believe President Harding and Milton Friedman. I’ll take Harding and Friedman. Not to mention, incentivizing unemployment is not a matter of economics, but rather a form of insurance or charity. What you incentivize, you get more of. Not hard working people on this forum, but there are people who “game” unemployment.

“I am not crying about it, as I am relatively prepared ...”

I’m glad to hear it, FRiend. Frankly, I’m unable to get prepared beyond pitiful preparations. I’ll just have to tough it out.

“... but honestly cannot believe how some do not realize how bad it is if the “’ast legs’ so to speak and kicked out, and people are now forced onto welfare.”

Actually, welfare isn’t so easy to get get onto. I knew a welfare witch. It takes serious networking with people who make a career of it.

“Unemployment benefits are not a great option, but the ideas of many here are far worse (at least for the economy).”

No one can outsmart the forces of a truly free market.

“People have already cut back on spending. If workers now think there is no safety net for them should they lose their jobs, they will cut back even more, thus hurting the economy and the national psyche. Bank on it.”

Fear is, sadly, an important motivator for any economy to function. No economy on earth has ever worked without fear. “If you do not work, you do not eat.”

That’s why Solomon spoke of putting fear in lazy fools, beating them with sticks, etc. Jesus also said there would always be the poor. I take that to mean that fear of poverty must always be a motivating factor.

It’s a tough economy, and it’s going to get a lot tougher before we pull out of this. The pain of fear has been taken out of this depression, and that only makes it worse, doesn’t it?

The sad part is that idealogues such as yourself will cut off your nose to spite your face. You will stick to your “conservative principles” even if it means tanking the economy once again. The economy is “growing” at a decelerating pace for the pat 3 Q’s......anything untoward could send it south quickly.

If you think removing a basic safety net during a time of massive uncertainty is a good idea making millions of working people pull in their spending even more, let’s just say you are not Solomon.

This is what the start of a recovery always feels like, doesn’t it? Fear. Apprehension. People think that’s only for Darth Vader. Nope. That’s life.

OK, so tell me an example of a fear-free economy that succeeds without a major resource boost like oil? I’m giving you the hard, cold facts. Look at Euorope. They tried fear free economies. After the riots, what are they doing now?

Devaluing the dollar is just a fake recovery. It’s a poor tax that hurts people on fixed incomes.

I’ll just wait for your example of a wonderful fear free economy then other than some place like Kuwait.

Oh and if devaluing the dollar is so great, then the Weimar Republic would be something else today! I don’t rely on mere theories the way progressive economists and their perverted mentor. Here’s what Keynes himself would say about screwing people with 3 Q ...

“By a continuous process of inflation, governments can confiscate, secretly and unobserved, an important part of the wealth of their citizens…and while the process impoverishes many, it actually enriches some…. The process engages all of the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and does it in a manner that not one man in a million can diagnose.” —John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) From Economic Consequences of the Peace 1920

And here is what he was talking about:

http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/GERinflation.htm

After the First World War Germany suffered from inflation. In January, 1921, there were 64 marks to the dollar. By November, 1923 this had changed to 4,200,000,000,000 marks to the dollar.

Some politicians in the United States and Britain began to realize that the terms of the Versailles Treaty had been too harsh and in April 1924 Charles Dawes presented a report on German economic problems to the Allied Reparations Committee. The report proposed a plan for regulating annual payments of reparations and the reorganizing the German State Bank so as to stabilize the currency. Promises were also made to provide Germany with foreign loans.

These policies were successful and by the end of 1924 inflation had been brought under control and the economy began to improve. By 1928 unemployment had fallen to 8.4 per cent of the workforce. The German people gradually gained a new faith in their democratic system and began to find the extremist solutions proposed by people such as Adolf Hitler unattractive.

1) Frieda Wunderlich, interview (1960)

As soon as I received my salary I rushed out to buy the daily necessities. My daily salary, as editor of the periodical Soziale Praxis, was just enough to buy one loaf of bread and a small piece of cheese or some oatmeal. An acquaintance of mine, a clergyman, came to Berlin from a suburb with his monthly salary to buy a pair of shoes for his baby; he could only buy a cup of coffee.

(2) Agnes Smedley, letter to Florence Lennon (31st December 1921)

Germany is in terrible condition this year. This is particularly true of the working masses, who are so undernourished that tuberculosis is having a rich harvest, particularly of adolescent children. Gambling in the mark has been the great indoor sport of the capitalists for months, and consequently food has increased by 25 to 100 per cent. I have lived in the homes of workers; they live on boiled potatoes, black bread with lard spread on it instead of butter, and rotten beer. In one hotel, the maid who built the fire fainted in our room. Exhaustion was the cause. We talked with her later and learned that she worked 17 hours a day and makes 95 marks a month - about 50 cents. She lives in the hotel, sleeping in one room with all the other maids - a tiny, dirty little place. They receive their food also - clothing they buy themselves - out of the 95 marks a month! This means they all become prostitutes and haunt the streets whenever they have time. Or they pick up “clients” in the hotel.

(3) Daily Express (24th February, 1923)

A Berlin couple who were about to celebrate their golden wedding received an official letter advising them that the mayor, in accordance with Prussian custom, would call and present them with a donation of money. Next morning the mayor, accompanied by several aldermen in picturesque robes, arrived at the aged couple’s house, and solemnly handed over in the name of the Prussian State, 1,000,000,000,000 marks or one halfpenny.

Sometimes I want to break down like a scared child.

My biggest concern is health insurance. I'm single, and I was fortunate enough to find a part time job that provided health coverage, and my COBRA runs out in February.

That’s not what they are doing though. Many here want the GOP to cut benefits because you thin the unemployed are lazy. That’s not why they want the benefits cut.

The GOP is saying they will vote to extend the benefits if there is a way to pay for them without tacking it on to the national debt.

Telling voters they are lazy in the middle of an economic downturn is a great way to lose elections and appear completely out of touch with the country.

Again, this is why we’re known as the STUPID Party.

Do we make it well-known that we didn’t vote against it but rather voted to insist Dems use the UNUSED TARP monies for this?

NO, we just let the Dems make whatever message they wanted from it so we can look as Scrooge like as possible...I mean what’s the message the public sees? WE VOTED AGAINST THOSE UNEMPLOYED...stupid stupid stupid.

This could have been a win to show our solution is superior but no, we butchered it.

Richie, you are a subject matter expert regarding "stupid". The problem is not the Republicans. The problem is the mainstream media. We have the correct message. We can't get it published...

Why aren’t the same people demanding that UB’s be cut also demanding that foreign aid be cut?

Okay....but what about a situation where you are actually earning more on unemployment than you would be working? What would you tell people who have no other source of income to do? This is sometimes the case if the fulltime job you lost was relatively lucrative. (Over 40k annually)
