WASHINGTON – Republicans in the House have blocked a bill that would have extended jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed beyond the holiday season.
The most recent extension of jobless benefits expires Dec. 1. Two million people will lose benefits averaging $310 a week nationwide by the end of the year.

you lack grace... it's not easy to get a job at McDonald's these days... and because of the poor economy, people are raking their own leaves and mowing their own lawns... sometimes people go through tough times "legitimately..." let him voice his frustrations... he doesn't need to hear your judgment of him... he's applied to 200 jobs... i'm sure some of those must have been to places like Taco Bell and Home Depot... you don't have to wish him extended unemployment benefits, but you don't have to be so cruel about it...

Doing away with unemployment benefits will probably take away another half a percentage point or so from “growth”. I am not crying about it, as I am relatively prepared, but honestly cannot believe how some do not realize how bad it is if the “last legs” so to speak and kicked out, and people are now forced onto welfare.
Unemployment benefits are not a great option, but the ideas of many here are far worse (at least for the economy).
People have already cut back on spending. If workers now think there is no safety net for them should they lose their jobs, they will cut back even more, thus hurting the economy and the national psyche. Bank on it.

Not to mention, incentivizing unemployment is not a matter of economics, but rather a form of insurance or charity. What you incentivize, you get more of. Not hard working people on this forum, but there are people who “game” unemployment.

Actually, welfare isn’t so easy to get get onto. I knew a welfare witch. It takes serious networking with people who make a career of it.

Fear is, sadly, an important motivator for any economy to function. No economy on earth has ever worked without fear. “If you do not work, you do not eat.”
That’s why Solomon spoke of putting fear in lazy fools, beating them with sticks, etc. Jesus also said there would always be the poor. I take that to mean that fear of poverty must always be a motivating factor.
If anyone wants a job in fast food, I’ll tell them how. But they better be willing to work their seseme seed buns off!
It’s a tough economy, and it’s going to get a lot tougher before we pull out of this. The pain of fear has been taken out of this depression, and that only makes it worse, doesn’t it?

OK, so tell me an example of a fear-free economy that succeeds without a major resource boost like oil? I’m giving you the hard, cold facts. Look at Euorope. They tried fear free economies. After the riots, what are they doing now?

Some politicians in the United States and Britain began to realize that the terms of the Versailles Treaty had been too harsh and in April 1924 Charles Dawes presented a report on German economic problems to the Allied Reparations Committee. That’s not what they are doing though. Many here want the GOP to cut benefits because you thin the unemployed are lazy. That’s not why they want the benefits cut.
The GOP is saying they will vote to extend the benefits if there is a way to pay for them without tacking it on to the national debt.
Telling voters they are lazy in the middle of an economic downturn is a great way to lose elections and appear completely out of touch with the country.

Okay....but what about a situation where you are actually earning more on unemployment than you would be working? What would you tell people who have no other source of income to do? This is sometimes the case if the fulltime job you lost was relatively lucrative. (Over 40k annually)
