Air force investigating flyover at football game

Four pilots at Vance Air Force Base in Enid are under investigation to determine if they flew too low over Kennick Stadium in Iowa before the Hawkeyes played Ohio State back in November.

"The gentlemen involved are instructor pilots and part of this was a training mission," said 1st Lt. Katherine Roling.

Although the fly over was authorized, pilots with the Air Force are required to fly at least 1,000 feet above congested areas such as a sports stadium.

Nearly two weeks after the flyover, the Air Force is still trying to determine exactly how low the pilots flew.

Since the game, several cell phone videos of the flyover have been posted on the internet and debated.

"Those guys are good and they know what they are doing or they wouldn't be doing what they are doing," said Pilot Lonnie Gillespie who flew in the Korean and Vietnam Wars

” Kennick Stadium in Iowa before the Hawkeyes “

This is a serious charge. It should lead to the University of Iowa shutting down their entire sports program permanently.

I attended a sporting event where they did a “very low” flyover, and it was awesome! I remember it clearly because I looked at my brother who was with me right after the flyby and stated with shock how low they were. This was in St. Louis and Busch Stadium for a Cardinals playoff game years ago. Don`t recall anything being said about it in the media afterwords though.

T-38's...used to fly em. Great aircraft.

The FAA's "1,000 foot rule" has killed airshows and flyovers.

I went to an airshow several years ago, with a guy flying a Pitts Special. He knew the FAA was watching, and although this guy was a great pilot, his show was about as exciting as watching grass grow.

But, we have the gubment being our All Oppressive Nanny - All The Time.

Now, we can't do flyovers (where no one was in danger), but the TSA has their hands in our pants.

I was there. That’s the first thing that went across my mind is ‘wow those dudes are LOW’.

If they didn’t hit the scoreboard, move along.

If they did hit the scoreboard it’s $25 bucks a month until it’s paid off. Still move along.

Yes, they were below 1000 feet, but that’s a stupid rule anyhow.

It was more fun in the old days. And I can’t recall any accidents to speak of from flyovers, other than an occasional plane that went down—which is inevitable, if enough flying hours are involved.

Looks to my calibrated eyeballs like it was a thousand and one feet. Surely the brass has something more important to do than investigating this.

"The FAA's "1,000 foot rule" has killed airshows and flyovers."

When I was stationed at Subic, the Corsair pilots would come screaming over the beach on Grande Island, so low & fast you'd swear they were kicking up water. It would scare the living cr*p out of everyone. Then, they'd circle back around sow low and slow that you'd could EASILY make out them laughing, just to rub it in.

I hate pilots.

Only reason people are complaining is that it was so low it didn’t last long enough!

I’ve been witness to military aircraft flying over my head so low I could see the squadron decal on the pilot’s helmet. Doesn’t bother me, but rules are rules and I believe the rule is 1000 feet over civilians.

Did somebody have an altitude gun or something to check how low they were or was it guess-ti-mation?

Probably it was a guess, unless a near by radar tower picked up the plane.
