WASHINGTON President Barack Obama struggled Tuesday to prevent wholesale defections by fellow Democrats that could sink the tax deal he worked out with Republicans angry opposition that could subject millions of Americans to a big holiday-season tax increase.
Many GOP lawmakers seemed ready to embrace the Obama-GOP compromise and declare victory. The question was whether enough Democrats would join them in support, especially in the House, where liberal resentment of the president's concessions on tax breaks for the wealthiest runs strong.
Obama went on national TV to give a ringing defense of his compromise, declaring it the necessary price for heading off a tax increase that neither taxpayers nor the weak economy could stand and for gaining more months of unemployment payments for millions of jobless workers.
The compromise plan would extend unemployment benefits for millions of people, and reduce Social Security payroll taxes for a year. Workers would pay a 4.2 percent tax rate instead of 6.2 percent.
Democratic leaders in the House criticized the tax plan, sometimes harshly, but stopped short of saying they would try to block it.

Absolutely, and if the RATS kill the whole thing not only do we get to blame them but we get to remind the libs their boy king voted with us to pass the bill!

If the dems kill this bill:
1) The American people will become furious when their paychecks get smaller and blame zer0 and the dems.
2) We can negotiate a MUCH better deal especially on the death tax.
3) Long term memory will help us iin 2010.
This is just the beginning of the benefits to having the dems kill this crummy compromise.
Make no mistake about it, the left is very, very, pleased with little Barry and is just making a lot of noise to dupe people the way they successfully duped into thinking that no one, not even Barry the Marxist, could be worse than the Bushhitler. Whoever put this plan into action has to be laughing their butt off at the comments here and elsewhere since with nothing other than a few lefty blog articles theyve managed to distract everyone into watching the democrat infighting. Now that youre all focused elsewhere, Barry will sneak a fast one into the Executive Order bin or introduce some regulation that will take the economy and your freedoms further down the toilet, all while the majority is gloating over not having their taxes increased. The democrat fascists knew they werent going to increase taxes day one of this little debate, they just wanted to put the blame on Barry rather than on Congress and theyve done so very well so far. Hopefully, some democrat in Congress will kill this deal, at which time the blogs now whining about Barry will scream at those halting the deal for distracting us from getting other things done before the Republicans take over.
Have a nice day
Plus more RINOs just got exposed.
They should have passed them before the election and they wouldn’t have taken such a shellacing....
This is really the first thing they have “lost?” BECAUSE IF THEY WERE US THEY COULD NOT HANDLE WHAT THEY THROW AT US ON A DAILY BASIS!
Bring it on you commie sons of bitches, good luck stealing more of our money via legislation, you are going to need to do it the old fashioned way, at gunpoint.
Vote RINOs out. Withhold any money from them. DIMs? BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Acts combative as hell (rather than sizing an golden opportunity to look like a leader) and then wonders why his own party is combastive?
Yeah, he might have made a few more friends if he hadn’t taken the opportunity to call the opposition party a bunch of “hostage takers”.
Don’t give Obama a two year extension, because he just wants a campaign issue in 2012...make tax changes that are permanent and demand a clean bill with NO Dream Act or unemployment insurance extensions.
I like this trade off......index the gas tax for inflation, but also index tax deductions for inflations and increase the standard deduction to $50k and index it for inflation, then let the Clinton tax code return and make it permanent. Lower the corporate income tax to 25% with no tax on dividends or interest, index cap gains for inflation at 20% rate, but zero percent held to retirement. Don’t tax income from overseas operations. Leave the Clinton code with three rates: 15%, 28%, 39.8%—but with the top one kicking in at $1 million income.
Promise to increase consumption taxes when the economy recovers....
“This is the same guy that nationalized huge portions of the finance industry...”
TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY!!!
Or are just )(&)&(*&^ off?
“This is the same guy that nationalized huge portions of the finance industry...”
TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY!!!
Or are we all just *****ing off on this whole Conservative Tea Party Movement thing? STOP THIS SPENDING BILL!
I don’t see any downside to the defeat of this package.
If the little commie piggies at the DUmpster, Kos, MoRons.org, the Huffy Post and other communist groups REALLY want a BIG government nanny state, why the hell don’t THEY volunteer to finance it. Their boy Daddy Soros can give them all the money they need. A communist government should not be financed by those Americans who do not believe in socialism, communism and Marxism. Let the liberal piggies do it!
I think we’re screwed no matter which way it goes...if they DO pass and Obozo signs, extending the Bush rates and the economy gets better, unemployment declines...all in time for 2012 and Obozo says it’s all his glory and gets re-elected.
the whole plan goes dumpster and tax rates get jacked up and the economy tanks and we all are doomed...
” Let me see. He comes out and announces a compromise”
Isn’t that our goal his last two years? We are winning.
Have to disagree, friend.
Just as `Coolhand Luke’ never planned anything in his life, by his own admission, Barry ain’t `masterminding’ anything.
He’s got a major problem on his hands: mutiny by his crew. Why? `cause national politics and presidentin’ is harder than calling a community meeting to discuss rent controls or sitting on his butt in the senate, polishing his halo and playing critic ...
Pop some corn, sit back and enjoy the demo-debacle. Only 23 more months of this comedy show to go.
I thought the only people who criticized Obama were RACISTS!!!!
You Should SEE ALL OF THE DEMOCRAT RACISTS over at Kos and Huffpo tonite!!!!
I once was lost, but now am found.
Thank you for posting.
I asy kill it and get something in return this time not some stupid quid pro quo, like for like or even swap.
That ain’t negotiating, that’s splitting the difference, a tactic for lazy people.
You are clinically insane or else a garden variety kook.
THE DEMOCRAT PARTY WANTS TAX INCREASES, NOT "TAX CUTS."
It will really be funny when the liberals find this out..
This Is Important: The Unemployment Insurance Extension Does NOTHING For The 99ers
I like your attitude.
Lock ‘n Load, FRiend.
He never fails to display his arrogance and stupidity when off-prompter.
The strange thing is I saw the Keyes-Obama debates when Obama was running for the US Senate. Obama may be the only person to have ever beaten Keyes in a debate, albeit not on substance, but on style points. As in the Kennedy/Nixon debate, Obama was "cool" and Keyes was "hot."
Obama answered policy questions with non-answer truisms, but he did so by speaking slowly, in a low, soothing voice, which had a hypnotic effect on the studio audience.
He seems rattled these days. And I think people are beginning to "get" his schtick.
It's far far worse than that.
He just told the whole world that all they need to do to get us to buckle is take some hostages AND HURT THEM.
A clear message that I assure you is not lost on al qaeda.
That's a very interesting comment from someone who has made posts agreeing with much of what I stated. Makes me wonder whether you missed your meds again.
A good catch and very unfortunate for what is left of the free world.
Even though he can’t think without a teleprompter instructing him, Obamao has vaguely figured out that raising taxes will further screw up the economy and cost jobs, making 2012 a bigger nightmare for Democraps than it is already going to be.
I’d be okay with killing it.
Don’t agree with that at all.
I do think most of their anger is real. They were angry over not getting the public option even though the legislation they did sign would lead to that in a few years. They don’t see the long term potential.
It’a possible someone could have designed this to make him appear moderate I guess...but I don’t think the majority are in on it.
I personally hope they kill it. It would hurt if a rax hike went into effect but at some point you have to make a stand and now is the time. Let’s see what kind of deal the GOP could get out of the W.H. if they were trying to deny any concession.
angry opposition that could subject millions of Americans to a big holiday-season tax increaseThe loser Daschle opposed tax cuts of any kind based on his stupid (and politically suicidal) comparison of someone at a very low level of income *only* saving a couple of hundred while someone making $250K would save thousands -- by doing so he merely pointed out the fact that he was *against* cutting income taxes for someone who clearly shouldn't be getting taxed on their tiny little income. Thanks NormsRevenge.
What tax cuts? I thought the argument was whether or not they were going to increase taxes.
“This is really the first thing they have lost? BECAUSE IF THEY WERE US THEY COULD NOT HANDLE WHAT THEY THROW AT US ON A DAILY BASIS!”
Maybe I have no imagination, but I don’t see how this could be a useful campaign issue for Obama. If Republicans put forward as weak a candidate as the last one, Obama might win on just about anything. But this is all beside the point. The country doesn’t need a tax increase now. Voters are behind Republicans that want spending cuts, however. Republicans shouldn’t try to be as cynical as the enemy is in order to get rid of Obama. Republicans should instead act on what they ran on: a conservative agenda for saving the country from corrupt, inept, and often treacherous leaders. Let the other side destroy itself.
It’s Kabuki theater at its finest .. next year should be a thrill a minute .. and ‘12 even better.. what a madhouse lies ahead but as long as the Fed keeps printing money and banks make profits.. we might pull out of this mess yet.. or not..
And which blogs would that be? I think a lot of Democrats would be happy with an across the board tax increase which they would attempt to blame on the Republicans somehow (maybe for not supporting the "deal" 100 % ?)
“... if the RATS kill the whole thing not only do we get to blame them but we get to remind the libs their boy king voted with us to pass the bill!”
And that’s the rub for the Rats. Their Boy King has essentially said it will kill the economy if they don’t pass it, because it WILL kill the economy if they don’t pass it.
Right now the Rats are simply posturing, hoping they can keep their Marxist base from becoming irreversibly pissed off.
It’s nearly inconceivable that the Rats will doom themselves by voting to destroy the economy via the biggest tax increase in U.S. history, because the the destruction will occur so quickly after their vote that it will be impossible to deny that it was their vote that caused it, particularly since their President said that is what would happen.
If by some improbable circumstance the Rats do end up voting to let the biggest tax increase in U.S. history occur while The Great Recession teeters on the edge of becoming The First Great Depression of the Twenty First Century, the Rats as a party are truly finished for at least a generation. Given the shellacking that occurred in the mid-terms, I think enough of them have awoken to the precariousness of their situation, that they will in fact avoid precipitating this gigantic tax increase.
Today I was thinking again about the terrifying sight I saw in Jan 2009. It was the look on Obama’s face soon after he was sworn in. He looked terrified for at least a few days. Conservatives make a big mistake thinking there is anything of substance inside his head or heart. The guy is in way over his head.
Estate tax goes up to 35 percent. Inherit the family business, sell it and give that SOB half.
This is what you get when you elect a communist organizer. More Unemployment, more lost jobs, more lost business.
Fidel Castro in a suit and tie.
Obama struggles? I call BS. Obama is too lazy to struggle. This is all an act.
