Reid: Earmarks are 'what we're supposed to do'
Washington Times ^ | 12/16/10 | Stephen Dinan

Preparing for a final showdown on the massive $1.1 trillion spending bill, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid defended the thousands of earmarks in the measure as the basic function of Congress. "That's our job. That's what we're supposed to do," Mr. Reid, Nevada Democrat, said as he chastised fellow senators who, while having requested pork-barrel spending earlier this year, are now decrying their inclusion in the spending bill.

Oh, no, that’s not what their job *is, but that’s what the Senate has become, thanks to vote-buying -— elections by popular vote.

Mercifully, TEA Party patriots changed the dialogue and the nation. Earmarks and big, deficit spending are more unpopular than obama.

AND the Reid/Pelosi Congress has the lowest approval in recorded history.

If we are going to have someone lead the Rats in the Senate, I am glad it is Reid. He can't help but say these outragous things making him and his ilk look so bad.

Actually no, you're supposed to "establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity" None of which you're doing, unless you can reconcile justice with Eric Holder not prosecuting racially motivated groups who keep voters from the polls, and extending constitutional protections to our sworn enemies (KSM, etc.); or reconcile defence with refusing to secure our borders even though our people are being killed and our cities overrun; or reconcile the general welfare with class-warfare and redistributionist economic policies; or reconcile liberty with government mandated healthcare, and reconcile the duty to posterity by bankrupting them through grossly irresponsible spending...

You don't know what the hell you're even doing there Harry.

It does not surprise me that he thinks this way, but our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves. With this type of overt corruption, it won’t be long before this republic falters.

Congress is broken. I really think it is hopeless and don’t expect much of anything to change when the GOP takes the house. These guys/gals are stuck on stupid and we the people can share the label for allowing them to get so far out of control they no longer grasp reality.

If we followed the constitution we would never have a problem with deficit spending!

I am only a poor, unfrozen caveman. Your world frightens and disorients me, but if even I can see that having a government satellite office, two or three bikepaths, a Roy Rogers museum and a highway extension in my district, courtesy of Uncle Sugar, fails to make up for a collapsing healthcare system, massive indebtedness, mass unemployment and tax increases for all as far as the eye can see, I imagine the rest of America can figure that out and make the calculation as well.

Your post reminded me of a Phil Hartman SNL character from 20 years ago. Caveman lawyer.

Dingy is insane, he may be brain damaged from his stroke!

In reality he uses “Earmarks” as a weapon to reward his friends and punish anyone who does not toe his line.

Las Vegas (Clark County) gets most of his earmarks, they have kept him in office.
Reno (Washoe County) gets a few too, they lean liberal and have provided the bare margin needed for him to win the last couple of elections.

The rest go to Lake Tahoe, NOT Douglas County, just Lake Tahoe for “Green” BS that actually does nothing for the regular people or business there.

The rural counties of Nevada get virtually nothing from Reid, except the tax bill to cover his friends pork payouts.

He makes the occasional token effort to fund an airport, schools, “Solar Power”, but it’s very limited and not sincere.

I knew it came from somewhere.

Socialism works when enough people go to bed each night thinking that their neighbor is being screwed over worse than they are. I think we all know we are ALL getting screwed here and a few bones being thrown back at us are not going to mollify.

Reid must think that senators are supposed to be pirates. He just said, pretty clearly I think, that their job is to plunder the people’s wealth and then divide the spoils.

"After all, who pays our salary? Lobbyists, that's who!"

(Disclaimer: Harry Reid never actually said the foregoing out loud. I had to read his mind. What? MoDo does it!)
