After abandoning on Thursday night a $1.3 trillion omnibus Senate spending bill, Democratic Senate Leader Harry Reid filed cloture for the DREAM Act and a stand-alone repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" - both of which are now expected to reach the Senate for final votes as early as this weekend.
Reid, faced with receding Republican support for the spending bill (not to mention threats to read it aloud in its 1,924-page entirety), turned his attention instead to two bills that liberal Democrats hope to push through in the final days of the lame duck congressional session.
The Senate is now expected to vote on debate for both the DREAM Act and a repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" on Saturday morning, and the Washington Post reports that final votes on both bills could take place as early as Sunday or Monday.
The Saturday vote on "Don't Ask" will be Senate Democrats' third attempt this year to eliminate the policy, which prohibits openly gay men and women from serving in the military, and many believe it the best - and possibly last - chance to repeal the measure before a newly Republican-heavy Congress convenes in 2011.

The "Dream Act" nationally will be California writ large, and is forever.
Call your senator!
Next; “Don’t swish, don’t lisp and keep yer hands to yerself”.. doctrine..
CLOSE DOWN GOVT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD
we cannot have openly serving queers, Hell look at the latest queer to have stolen all the info and given it to wikileaks
Dream act, yea the name game again from the left like homosexuals they say are gay when they are not they’re homosexuals , queers.
Letting in millions of illegals to ensure the rats stay i power is giving away the country.
Can’t even believe we’re talking about men who like to poke dicks up hairy arse being told that they should serve and have equal rights, hell what is next women and horses is OK then, men dressing in skirts on base after work.
illegals being legal and then not speaking English, saying no more 4th July.
what utter crap and to think it is because the GOP have no guts to stand up and speak out and because many sit on their asses posting on sites and yet never making a call, infact making lots of calls to these north east reps
been on the phone for the last two days and nearly called every senator some 5 times saying do not vote to repeal or vote for the dream act and will continue to do so until voting time.
I’ve got a couple of people doing the same.
If we get at least 10 people making calls to those reps thinking of voting for this then we could stand a chance because you can bet you house that the queers and the left are.
Call, send mail , I take it Hannity and others have not mentioned this either or am I wrong?
Ping!
Yes, defeat them both - I don’t care which of the two are “more dangerous”, neither should pass during the lame duck session. They had the whole government for two years to pass their garbage, too late, too late.
hardly any media including FOX have not even mentioned don’t ask and then the vote will come Saturday when no one will hear about it and that is when the media will talk about it saying how great it is.
Unfortunately they can't let down - IMO this is even more important.
However, now the Dems can blame it on the evil Republicans while the majority of gay and lesbian voters will go about their business blissfully unaware that they are being used as political footballs by the Democrat politicians they blindly support.
seems don’t ask will be repealed and we’ll have men dressing in skirts on base after work and men holding hands on base.
Of course keep calling and sending mail to stop this and tell Brown, Collins Snowe etc to not repeal this
it’;s all Hannity ever talks about is the economy, so much for him being a conservative when he doesn’t have the balls to take on the social issues and the queer agenda.
Sorry disagree getting rid of don’t ask is just as bad as the budget.
You get don’t ask repealed and then they will say they should overturn DOMA as they cannot marry in their state, then it will be teach it in school as it is the marriage law, so now we have kids being told how to do fisting up a man’s arse.
All of these bills should fail and if the GOP had bills along with the likes of Hannity then we could stop them
This is why the omnibus was killed. They REALLY want the amnesty. They are SCREWED in ‘12 without it.
Mike
WE are SCREWED in 12 -- and beyond -- WITH it.
Maybe its cause I've seen my state irrepairably damaged by that kind of starry eyed crap.
But I agree, its outrageous that this lame duck congress would even consider voting on legislation as crucial as any of these.
Hate to say it, but looks like they have the votes for DADT repeal:
http://hotair.com/archives/2010/12/16/breaking-brown-to-back-dadt-repeal/
Passing the DREAM Act seems more iffy.
Might be the only way to stop this trickery is to defeat the spending resolution.
CNN International online reports that Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Lisa Murkowski and Scott Brown will only vote to repeal DADT if a continuing resolution to fund the government is passed first.
If the resolution is passed today, the Dems might have the necessary votes for cloture.
have to close Govt, all these important issues are being voted on now while they have power and it is a disgrace while the media stay silent about don’t ask waiting to mention it when no one is watching on Saturday.
I;ve called all those senators many times in the last couple of days and have got a couple of pother people to do so too.
I’m not sitting down and watching them pass these bills without a fight and if they do win then I will not give up until everything they do is overturned so GOP you better be ready to get some balls for a change.
If we had a lameduck sessions you know the rats would close down Govt so why are we not?
“Dream Act”...”Amnesty Bill... If this get’s passed then you will have a Country over-run with Mexicans voting Democrat on everything. This my friends is exactly why the Dems want it passed because they know they lose the election for years to come!”
I agree with this statement posted on another site.
Start calling everybody. We can kill this just as we killed the Omnibus bill.
These WHITE Democrats don’t seem to understand: when Mexicans become the voting bloc they hope for, these WHITE Dems will be primaried out by people named “Martinez”, :Guiterrez”, etc....
I am getting sick of getting sick of hearing about the Dream Act, that most of Americans do not want it, we cannot afford. Is Washington just firing up the printing press to inject more money for their special projects, even though we do not have it ?
Libertarians never do. Anne Coulter and I agree, Goldwater was the leas social conservative in the field, and probably had more affect on the election than the Daisy Add.
When I was in the Navy we had a place for Homosexuals, it was a little room with bars. Other wise they would have to be very good swimmers.
Adultery used to be a court martial offense, I guess Patsy Shroeder changed the military forever.
Webb 202-224-4024
Warner 202-224-2023
Routed to voice-mail and was easy to do.
Curiously Warner's mail box was full today.
I have no idea how many homosexuals currently serve, but I predict that most of them are content to "not tell."
The purpose of DADT was to end the witch hunts by the military and to stop the practice of allowing suspected homosexuals to serve for 19 years only to be discharged with no pension or other benefits weeks before their retirement.
The left wants people to believe that there are countless military personnel who are serving in fear of being found out. I don't believe this is true.
The right wants people to believe that if it is overturned we will end up with "men dressing in skirts on base after work and men holding hands on base." I don't believe that is true, either.
What you likely will have is a few homosexual activists joining the military--with no intent to serve out their contract--to specifically stir the pot and push the envelope as far as possible.
With only a matter of days left in which to break the back of America, these zombies are not going to waste any of them sleeping. It’s going to be a long weekend.
it’;s a shame for you and I who are vets to see PC infest a great institution. My kids , my boys rather were looking forward to carrying on a family tradition of over a 100 years and now it looks to be I will be the last one.
Hannity etc could easily mention the don’t ask and get his followers calling in their thousands but he never mentions it because he’s a coward like so many who are on the radio or TV.
They’re happy to call themselves conservatives and talk about budgets but that is all they ever do while they collect vast amounts of money from other conservatives.
Guess money is more important to them than principles.
We heard that one guy while I was serving might have been a homosexual, he was quickly moved and never seen again for his safety I presume.
That was the only time we ever heard of a homosexual then.
Many I still know are serving and they said in other words they will not stand there and have homosexuals walking on base holding hands or them having homosexual parties on base nor will they allow men to be wearing skirts after work on base.
These people which say no big deal or so what have no idea the amount of problems which this will lead to.
Once this is repealed or if it is because no one calls due to be lazy or not bothered DOMA will be next as they will say they can fight and die but cannot marry.
I think if Manchin and Webb vote for repeal of DADT, they had better not plan on running for reelection in 2012.
exactly
A few homosexual activists will join to cause trouble and look for lawsuits so they can get more money for the next step in their agenda.
The reason don’t ask was given was to say this is your private life, and at that time homosexuals said it was their private life.
Of course it was a red herring, they of course want the world to know what gets them off . Wait till they ask for freak parades on base and the lawsuits come. Wit till two men ware holding hands or they dress as women on base.
If it passes then the congress and when we get the white house should overturn it ASAP and never allow this to happen again.
And we can look forward to seeing marine corps blues in the Folsom Street fair.
“But will it pass the House?”
It already did, earlier this week, with a large majority.
I need to start listening to the news more.
Already passed House. AS for the rest of your comment, I must say, it is a breath of fresh air to read some actual logic in a comment on FR.
This place doesn’t have the quality of non-reactionary, logical posts it used to have. Now many Freepers are like zombies just mindlessly freaking out about everything.
I would prefer DADT stay, but if it goes I think a way will be found to make it work without damaging the military.
The DREAM act is the real villain that must be stopped here out of the various bills.
The silence from both on the DREAM act is deafening.
That's reassuring. Glad to see you backed that up with empirical data.
The point has been reached where no one, not even FOX, will come out with any viewpoint that opposes gays. This is because of FEAR of reprisal! Is this what America has come to?
How in the world did a nasty sexual perversion manage to get itself elevated to a “minority” and exercise such power over America? Such was the fall of Rome. I smell smoke.
Any talk of amnesty before our borders are secure is suicide.
No kidding. What "minority" perversion will be next to receive "status"? I don't want to know.
Apparently the two doofus heads here in VA are voting to repeal DADT. They just put it online in our local paper.
So-called transgenders of course. We will soon have Marines who dress in trousers or skirts/bras depending on whether they feel more like a guy or a girl on that particular day. And as Admiral Mullen says, if other Marines have a problem with that, they will be invited to find a line of work other than war-fighting.
Forever dem if amnesty passes. Simple as that, so burn those phone lines!
Repubs are too chicken sh*t to just walk out. They need to shit it down until January. Lame duck sessions are a joke. How is it fair to let members vote on things that determine our future....... members that have been rejected and voted out by the PEOPLE. It’s ridiculous. Nothing is higher priority for the Dems than making sure the fudge packers are taken care of. Freaking perverts!
Amnesty is an insane idea whether the borders are secure or not.
WHOA, HORSE!
I really don't wish to start a food fight, but the following is something which might interest some thread readers.
You go a bit wide of the mark. Your fear may not apply to every location nor every demographic.
I live in San Antonio, Texas. Our city is over sixty-percent Tejano/Latino/Mexican-by-descent. The neighbor family to my left as I type this reply is from Guatamala. David is a recent naturalized citizen. David was so proud of earning his citizenship that the first thing he did when I got home was show me his certificate of naturalization and the lamented wallet-size version.
"This is my country." He beamed with pride, meaning he believed correctly that he shared something more in common with his neighbors than he did the day before the naturalization ceremony. I suddenly remembered how his wife, who then spoke little English, told my wife how they had watched the HBO series, "John Adams" (obviously, the Spanish dubbed version), and how when their children started school they would learn English (which they absolutely have).
Contrary to popular history, until the middle 1900s San Antonio was not predominantly Mexican. What spiked the demographic shift was the long and bloody Mexican Revolution which drove refugees north. Among those refugees was Henry Cisneros's Grandparents.
(The Mexican Cartel Wars is pretty much nothing more than the revoluntionary class wars within Mexico. Lots of Mexican nationals with means are fleeing to the U.S.)
In the present form, I oppose the DREAM Act and have urged all of my representives in Congress to vote it down and out. In a different form . . . I might support it.
But, with respect to elections here in San Antonio, ethnicity might play a part, (race and ethnicity always does) but even in the hey-day of La Raza Unida/Chicano activism, we always chose the best choice for San Antonio, as we believed it might be.
Majority Latino/Tejano/Indian districts elected White (Anglo) candidates to represent them on the City Council. Though I never agreed with their politics, they were Robert "Bob" Thompson (a San Antonio lawyer, UTSA professor and a really aggressive and talented fighter pilot serving with the Texas Air National Guard's 149th Fighter Group (now Wing), and Patty Radle, a woman I am grateful who never ran for office in my district.
In San Antonio . . . your race, ethnicity only gets you so far. Can't judge the rest of the nation.
Our present mayor is a young Mexican-by-descent upper and comer in the Democratic Party. He replaced an old white guy who was turned out of office only because we have term limits.
Don't know how they count themselves to the census, but our City has been for awhile by ethnicity a majority held by Spanish surnamed representatives.
What I do know is they hired a White woman as City Manager, and offered her a crazy benefit package to keep her here. Even I think she has done a great job.
The Latino/Mexican dominated City Council hired a White man to be our Chief of Police.
Most telling of all . . . in every judicial race where an incumbent Democratic Judge was contested, the county replaced him or her with a Republican. EVERY RACE.
I am so proud to live in San Antonio, Texas!
What is often overlooked are the Asian and other so-called minorites in San Antonio and how they participate in all aspects of our city's life.
Too bad.
R.
I wish the Old Dominion could do better than the two kneepadders we have in the Senate. Both are sh*tting on themselves with glee over repealing DADT. Sorry, America.
