My only possible concern is that with ultralights the recoil can be quite a sting.

They are often recommended for women but once they get a taste of the recoil they dont want to shoot it.

I wouldn’t shy away from a taurus, they have a lifetime transferable warranty.

But you may want to let her shoot one first. In fact I recommend that you shoot any gun you plan to carry before you buy it just to be sure you are comfortable with it.

So the question is, all things considered with our situation, is this a poor choice of weapon for a new female pistol owner to carry?

So get a Smith Airweight. It is what the Taurus is modeled after anyway.

Mine is lite, has a great trigger and has been a great little gun.

Because it’s so light it will smack pretty good.

You should get your cousins to allow her to test fire theirs.

I'll chime in here, for what it's worth, which ain't much.
If she liked the feel of that Taurus, then that's a great start. Better if she actually shot it before buying. I bought a CC pistol (CZ 82) before shooting it based on recommendation from someone I trust (H/T mylife), but I have some experience with sidearms.
All the training vids I've seen say that the worst place for a woman to pack the heat is in a purse. It needs to be on the body whenever possible, but there are times when that isn't practical.

Thanks; that’s a good point that I hadn’t considered.

The weight difference *is* significant; 13.5oz in titanium vs. 22.5oz in stainless, from the Taurus website. I can see how that might be a problem, recoil-wise.

The idea of shooting it first before buying is of course a good one. I just have to figure out how to pull it off before her B-day. ;-)

Of all my revolvers, this one has the best DA trigger. it's smooth and easy to pulll thru. You can also easily pull it to just where it breaks and hold it untill ready to fire.

The little rig described is great for conceal on the body.

My experience however is that the recoil of airlights scares the hell out of women.

Mrs Ticks mileage may vary.

You are right. You can hold it at the breakpoint when shooting at the range.

I would personally like to have a hammer and have SA/DA option.

One thing my meager assortment of firearms is lacking is a decent power rifle (my .22 doesn't qualify). Since dollars are scarce, in order to get the most bang for the buck I am really leaning toward a Mosin Nagant.

Several friends (and internet info sites) have strongly suggested that before firing the first round, a Mosin should be taken to a good gunsmith, to examine for safety, clean thoroughly, check headspace, etc. That sure seems to make sense, but I don't have a feel for what would be a reasonable fee for that service. Any ideas of a fair price range?

Also, any suggestions for ammo? I see Russian, Czech, Albanian, and God knows what all else among the milsurp stuff, as well as more modern non-corrosive stuff, and could use some help navigating the maze. I would primarily be punching holes in paper.

I have the Smith 360 PD and it is a pleasure to carry at barely 12 oz empty. But it kicks with only a .38 special.

I much prefer the baby Glock.

>> Better if she actually shot it before buying.

Yeah, the more I think about it I just have to get the wheels turning and figure out how to make that happen.

>> All the training vids I’ve seen say that the worst place for a woman to pack the heat is in a purse

I can see the logic in that... and yet I can pretty much guarantee that that is where hers will end up. I guess I figure a) better in the purse than not at all, and b) whatever serves to get her (and me!) motivated to get off our butts and get a couple sidearms and some training will be a GOOD thing.

Thanks for your insights.

The 638 has a shrouded hammer, so you do get sa/da.
