I agree. And the Founders also understood the difference between raising revenue and the federal government inserting itself into industrial policy. You can't find many examples of the government inserting itself anywhere without screwing things up (e.g., Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac).

Oh Dear, you mentioned that the Chinese are still communist.
That is very bad form here on FR.
I used to be a free trader, but no longer.

Tariffs have been a very dirty word ever since Smoot-Hawley, but not with me.

I’d like to see the federal government funded almost entirely by tariffs. That has two benefits: We would trade less easily with countries that are not our friends, and the size of the federal budget would be dramatically less than it is now.

Smoot-Hawley tariff myth is one of the biggest fallacies used by the Free Trade extremists. Smoot did not cause the Great Depression, nor contributed to ir. There were tariffs on goods before Smoot...and also....all the European nations had tariffs on American goods.

And, true, the USA got all of its Federal revenue from tariffs before the Income Tax was passed in 1913. The US govt ran quite efficiently on just tariff revenue. Big government Globalists like Woodrow Wilson wanted the Income Tax to expand government

“Free Republic discovers that there is such thing as a free lunch.”

The free lunch is at the top. The American Pie is getting smaller by the month, soon here will be no crumbs which trickle down to the rest of us.

She’s about twenty years too late, but apparently she gets it now:

Phylis Schafly has been warning about Free Trade for years. This is not the first she has written about it. Of course, as the GOP went more Liberal Globalist...they have ignored Schafly. Schafly is truly one of the greatest Conservatives of our era.

We are sending the American Pie to China, to the tune of 20 billion dollars every month.

THAT is why the American Pie is getting smaller.

We’re squandering it.

The above looks like part of the campaign platform of the DNC.

There are so many traitors in Congress.

Once upon a time, our leaders at least pretended to protect American interest.

Corporations spend billions on lobbying congress and state houses.

It was reported a couple of years ago, Dell employed almost a hundred lobbyist in Austin state house alone.

Politicians are on the take, when will Americans wake up and break this two party stranglehold.

Are we so ignorant that we cannot see what these people are doing to this nation?

Open borders, allowing millions of impoverished illegals flow into this nation.

One million LEGAL immigrants allowed in per year.

H1B visas, allowing foreign workers to work in the U.S. on the cheap.

Unbelievable incompetents regarding fiscal management in Congress. They've run us in the ground.

Federal Reserve allowed to spread OUR hard earned tax dollars throughout the world. Bailing out huge multi-national corporations and mega banks.

This is the largest transfer of wealth in American history. Downright theft.

Lopsided trade negotiations that have literally given away the farm.

Uncle Sugar using the IRS as a strong arm to intimidate citizens.

We have become over regulated, pass laws on top of laws.

Federal, state, county, municipal entities are heaping mountains of fees, levies, surcharges and taxes upon citizens. This combined accounts for nearly 50% of a persons income per year.

We are becoming a super surveilled society. Webs of surveillance cameras being installed throughout our cities using DHS grants.

Drive down the road sometime, look at almost every intersection. Sometimes 5, 10 cameras per intersection.

Conspiracy theory? Research it yourself. The U.K. has become the most surveilled society on the planet.

From the moment a person walks out of their flat to the time they arrive in the evening, they've been caught on camera over three hundred times.

Is this what we want as a nation?

We are losing our liberties.

Yes, like the Federal Government getting us hooked up with GATT/WTO, NAFTA, CAFTA, and the UN. Free Trade has created some of the most Statist Big Government organizations ever...which American people have no say over.

No wonder Karl Marx was a Free Trader

[Free trade] breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade.

I’ve been talking about this for decades, may be they got it from me.

Karl Marx *supported* ‘free trade’.

For exactly the results, we are seeing right now.

So Marx was correct, and you agree with him? How does that make me, a free-trader, a Marxist?

You know, I’d rather pay a dollar more for a cheap electric alarm clock that was made in Saginaw, than continue to support ChiCom slave labour.

Why do you assume that the one has to lead to the other?

How do you tell a communist? Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin.
Ronald Reagan, tool.

I’m all for free trade, but I don’t think the ChiComms have been playing fair. I hope this article will enlighten/educate me.

Rudeboy, I have no problem with “free trade” per say, I agree with the general concept. Problem is we're not seeing competitive trade, we're seeing a transfer of wealth, productivity, and technology. It's not working!
