A 30-year-old man with an extensive criminal record was charged Tuesday in the shooting death of a Georgia State Patrol trooper who was killed after trying to pull over a driver for a minor traffic violation, authorities said.

Gregory Favors is charged in the murder of Chadwick LeCroy, 38, who was shot in the neck Monday night after trying to stop Favors' 2007 Mazda for having a broken headlight, said Vernon Keenan, the director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

(WSB Radio/AP) -- A 30-year-old man with an extensive criminal record was charged Tuesday in the shooting death of a Georgia State Patrol trooper who was killed after trying to pull over a driver for a minor traffic violation, authorities said.

Gregory Favors is charged in the murder of Chadwick LeCroy, 38, who was shot in the neck Monday night after trying to stop Favors' 2007 Mazda for having a broken headlight, said Vernon Keenan, the director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Favors was driving in a busy corridor in northwest Atlanta when authorities say LeCroy tried to make the routine traffic stop. Favors sped away, and less than two minutes later crashed his car on an embankment, with the driver's door wedged into a brick mailbox, Keenan said.

When LeCroy approached Favors' car, video footage showed that Favors suddenly opened the passenger door and fired three rounds, striking LeCroy once in the neck, Keenan said. He then drove off in LeCroy's squad car, ditched it a few blocks later to take off by foot, and was arrested within several hours, authorities said.

``This is just a tragic series of events,'' Keenan said. ``The trooper would have had no reason to believe this was anything but a traffic stop.''

Favors shook his head Tuesday when a TV reporter asked whether he shot the policeman.

The suspect has been arrested 19 times and has three felony convictions the GBI said.

His first arrest came on exactly eleven years ago Tuesday. The most recent arrest was on Dec. 11, when he was charged with attempting to break into a car, possession of cocaine and obstruction of a law enforcement officer, according to Fulton County Jail records. He was released three days later.

LeCroy turned to a career in law enforcement when the economy tanked in 2008. He previously had worked in construction. His father and step father are retired law enforcement officers. His father worked for the Smyrna Police while his step father retired from the Cobb Police.

LeCroy, who is survived by a wife and two sons, was the first state trooper to be killed by gunfire since 1975 and the 27th trooper to be killed in the line of duty since the patrol was organized in 1937.

Catch and release crime bureaucracy/industry. Citizens need, really really need, to shoot and kill way more home invaders, car thieves, molesters. As many extra judicial hangings too. There are entire familes that need to be burned alive in their hovels.

Meanwhile the rest of us are also arrested for too much salt, talking on a cell phone, not having serf/slave imposed payments to a false/rip off financial scheme dressed as Obamacare/Romneycare/TARP...etc..

He has been a busy boy for December apparently. The car is linked to more crimes earlier this month.

How is it that people with a record such as this manage to be free to work their evil. God knows, literally, he has shown beyond a doubt that he’s not fit to be anywhere other than incarcerated. Sure, he’s out of circulation now but look the price that has had to be paid to get done what should have long since been handled.

If it’s simply a matter of not having the resources to keep them locked up then let’s free some non-violent offenders to make room for them.

Time was an enterprising young journalist would take on this story and look into it with a fine-toothed comb, naming names and putting the blame where it belongs, be it judge, parole board or governor.

Like so many, many things in 21st century America it’s just one more example of the total inability of the average Joe-voter to have a say in the running of their country. With few exceptions the candidates make all sorts of big noises about what they will do, but once they’re in office they fall prey to the siren songs of power and the need to get re-elected.

And 19 arrests in 11 years? What happened to sentencing guidelines? His last offense he was released on signature; no bond required.

I would love to know how he got that 2007 Mazda. I can’t afford one.

Oh, and check out this quote from a resident on the street where the shooting happened, “You can’t stop crime,” McNeal said with resignation. “It’s just sad that he died. I feel sorry for the brother who shot him and I feel sorry for the officer, too.”

Atlanta is a sh!thole... and the judges that kept letting this demon out, should all meet a much worse fate than this innocent Trooper did. Gee... wonder what common denominators keep running through crimes likes this... hmmmmmmmmm.

Don't be silly. This guy will be untouchable in prison: he killed a "white devil Poe-leese". He is at the top of the criminal heirarchy in prison.

True the shooter is scum.

GA has no reluctance to impose the death penalty, so he will get it.

However, the cop made a serious mistake.

Anyone who runs from a cop should be considered likely to be violent when cornered.

Note that he had been on the force only two years and was working by himself.

A very sad combination of circumstances that made him vulnerable.

The bullshit theory that "rehabilitation" is possible for criminals with a mindset that envisions living by deriving income from law-breaking acts is a fantasy.

This is along the same foolish thought that generation after generation of living off others' incomes in some ghetto will somehow change and the non-productive slugs and gang-bangers will find meaningful legitimate livlihood LEGALLY.

We have Liberals who don't recognize reality, but push their "diversity", "sensitivity", and "criminal empowerment" ideas on the rest of civil society, and it ends up costing lives and fortunes.

Here are some police mug shots taken of Gregory Favors during his 18 trips to the Fulton County Jail. The photo at bottom right was taken on Dec. 28, 2010, a day after Trooper 1st Class Chadwick LeCroy was gunned down in the line of duty.

Totally agree. “Career criminal” and “habitual offender” are two phrases that need to be removed from the lexicon.

Instead of three strike laws, there should be three option laws: 1) hanging 2) electric chair or 3) firing squad. This law would be enforced within 90 days of a second conviction of ANY violent crime. No appeals, no extenuating circumstances, no excuses for a sad childhood, or drug/ alcohol addictions. No BS.

My conclusion after reading the article is that when people act irrational they will only continue to escalate their irrational behavior unless met with overpowering resistance to such behavior.

It’s too bad the deceased officer had not learned this lesson yet, he may still be alive.

Very sad.
