Davis says he is leaving Chicago mayoral race

U.S. Rep. Danny Davis withdrew his candidacy from the Chicago's mayor race Friday, leaving former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun as the only remaining prominent black candidate in the campaign. Davis, who announced his decision alongside Braun at a New Year's Eve news conference, said the decision was an act of unity for blacks in the city. The two Democrats had been under pressure from African American leaders in the city for weeks to agree on a so-called consensus candidate to unify black votes.

"I come to help prove that unity can be more than a concept, he said. "It is more than just an ideology. The community is coming together."

Some black leaders believe it is necessary for a unity black candidate to compete against former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, former school board president Gery Chico and others in the campaign to replace retiring Mayor Richard Daley.

The idea is that too many black candidates will split black votes and decrease the chance for representation. More than one-third of the city's 3 million people are black.

Davis and Braun appeared together along with Democratic state Sen. James Meeks, who withdrew his candidacy last week with a statement that blacks in Chicago are divided and the other black candidates should drop out. Both Davis and Braun had said they were in the race to the end.

"People thought we would be divided and this would be a bitter campaign among African Americans," Meeks said. "We have a lot of problems in our community . . . and the last thing we wanted was this division to continue."

Davis declined to elaborate on why he dropped out rather than Braun, simply

I guess whites can’t represent black people.

Rham’s got the goods on him? Chi-Town politics all the way! That’s how Bammy got into the Senate; he systematically eliminated the competition via scandal.

Though, of course, the Pubbie that year gave him PLENTY to work with! ;)

More rampant racism from the black community.
The corruption and crime in that city is so rampant, it is hard to tell when someone is being honest. I don’t live there, but I was in town the day the governor went to jail for whatever he did...that was a few years back. Had breakfast at the same restaurant that he did before he was driven to check into prison. TV crews were everywhere.

Delightful place.

Epic fail is a buzz word out of fashion for 2011, so I’ll use it in advance for one last time

All the other candidates should run in the regular election, but Carol should run for the mayor of black Chicago. You know, like Miss Black America.

I hope Braun beats Rahm's ass. The north shore yuppie democrats and the Union Poles and Micks need to get some Coleman Young style of representation and be put in their place. Maybe they (and the collar counties) will wake up to what true leftism is. The other reason is that Braun's a loose cannon and will piss off a few of the elites there.

With the power Rham has in his back pocket, he is definitely going to run unopposed for mayor. No one will have the balls to oppose him, if they want to stay alive politically. (Maybe even alive physically, look what happened when people opposed the Clintons, they turned up dead).

That *could* be the motive behind Davis’ dropping out, but obviously if blacks can coalesce behind one candidate, the chances of a black mayor are higher. I’m taking Davis at his word. Now if Braun drops out too, I’ll know the fix is in for Rahm.
