U.S. Rep. Danny Davis withdrew his candidacy from the Chicago's mayor race Friday, leaving former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun as the only remaining prominent black candidate in the campaign. Davis, who announced his decision alongside Braun at a New Year's Eve news conference, said the decision was an act of unity for blacks in the city. The two Democrats had been under pressure from African American leaders in the city for weeks to agree on a so-called consensus candidate to unify black votes.
"I come to help prove that unity can be more than a concept, he said. "It is more than just an ideology. The community is coming together."
Some black leaders believe it is necessary for a unity black candidate to compete against former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, former school board president Gery Chico and others in the campaign to replace retiring Mayor Richard Daley.
The idea is that too many black candidates will split black votes and decrease the chance for representation. More than one-third of the city's 3 million people are black.
Davis and Braun appeared together along with Democratic state Sen. James Meeks, who withdrew his candidacy last week with a statement that blacks in Chicago are divided and the other black candidates should drop out. Both Davis and Braun had said they were in the race to the end.
"People thought we would be divided and this would be a bitter campaign among African Americans," Meeks said. "We have a lot of problems in our community . . . and the last thing we wanted was this division to continue."

Carol doesn’t have a chance in hell to win. Even if she got all the black votes it wouldn’t be enough. She needs the lakefront liberals to win- and she aint gonna get ‘em. First of all, she’s run a solely race based campaign. She just got into a feud with a local white columnist and denounced him as a racist. And even though the guy’s a drunken wife beater, it made her look really bad. More importantly, considering the demographics of a very large percentage of the lakefront liberals, they’re gonna go with Emmanuel all the way.
The fix is in. Rahm will be the mayor. The vote doesn’t matter. After all, in Chicago it’s not who casts the votes who decide anything, it’s who counts the votes who decide everything.

Latino (Mostly Puerto Rican and Mexican) - 27.4%
Asians - 4.9%
About 1/3 of the city is White, and they'll be divided between Lake yuppies, city workers, and the old union Polish and Irish areas (often overlap with city workers).
I'll bet money that the white ethnic union types will back Rahm. They hate Coleman Young types like Braun, and so do the yuppies. Which way will the Puerto Ricans and Mexicans vote? I think they'll decide the winner.

How logically then, can we expect a black person to represent whites? They have a totally outsider, biased understanding of what it is to be white.
I don’t know much about Danny Davis, but I do know Carol Moseley Braun is one dim light bulb. If she is the best candidate Chicago Blacks can come up with, they don’t deserve to rule Chicago, one of the major cities of the USA.
Yeppers, that was my first thought. Zero also had great "luck" with opponents dropping out.
Only Dems play the political race card. In TX, the only Blacks ever elected state-wide are conservative Repubs.
They will not vote black. They hate the blacks, the blacks just don’t know it yet.
Carol Mostly-Fraud called Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg a drunk and she’s a phony. So? A letter writer to the Sun Times castigated Steinberg because she claimed that he suggested that only a white male is capable of being the Windy City’s mayor. I’m certain that there are a good number of Blacks and hispanics who can do a good job as Mayor, sadly, none of them are running.
Could be fun to see what Braun would do with Chicago!

Carol Mostly-Fraud is about six fries short of a Happy Meal. Four years with her at the helm in Chicago would be a colossal disaster not seen since the days of Harold Washington. Chicago and Carol deserve each other.
Mosley Braun as mayor is just what Chicagans deserve.

These people are such racists. The hypocrisy just keeps on rolling.
Braun and dead fish are probably equally corrupt. Dead fish is just smarter about it. Braun is dumber than a bag of hammers.
It’s a grotesque choice, but if I lived there I’d have to go with dead fish because he would govern better than Braun, which would still be terrible. With just a very few exceptions, blacks don’t govern well at all. Dead fish probably wouldn’t be any worse than Daley. Braun would.
Just ask somebody white from South Africa how blacks govern in a mixed race population.
