Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre's extraordinary photographs documenting the dramatic decline of a major American city

Exactly. Look at South Africa or East St. Louis. Yikes!
You are looking at proof of how poorly the dem party is....how many years of dem control in Detriot?
Looks a lot like a diversity riot. Since the Dembulbs were running the city into the ground it’s not surprising to read how corrupt the city was at that time which had a mix of racism and police brutality that Black people there didn’t care for to the point of fighting back en mass.
“The truth is most cities primarily run by black people look like ghettos..
In the U.S, Africa or anywhere...
A Hard saying but it is true..
97+% of black voters voted for Obama...
Merely 3% were smart...”
That makes them the most progress community in the nation! But, of course, that depends on your definition of “progress.”
People pay good money for the stuff - look at “This Old House”.
The city can raise money to bulldoze the blight, and, more importantly, history lives on (via the craftsmanship of handmade American fixtures, etc.)
And America, in total, not far behind.
I'm afraid it may be too late for that. Just over 2 years ago 63 million-plus American adults voted for a "stinking Liberal Progressive" who made very few bones about what he and his fellow "progressives" have planned for the US and it's people. A 1/4-century from now all of the US will look worse and BE worse than Detroit today unless the millions of centrist voters of both major parties get a clue about what these mis-named "progressives" are doing to our nation before 2012 comes around. Worse yet, even a fiscally conservative administration and Congress might not be able to save the U.S. Multiple millions of us are so conditioned to what appear to be the goodies of the Marxist-lite welfare state that a conservative administration and Congress might be thrown out after one term of trying to reverse the 7-decade leftist political tide that has engulfed us in this sad state of political/fiscal affairs.
Neither conservative Repubs nor liberal Dems decide who governs America these days, the mushy-middle voter with no real commitment to either party does. And he/she usually tends to lean to the left, thank you very much Mr. American media. If the majority of mushy-middlers are so far out of touch with reality that they gave us Obama and his Marxist retinue, which they did, IMHO they're as dangerous as the far leftists who know exactly what they're doing. The founding fathers didn't intend for their progeny to live under a dictatorship of the proletariat (one that's actually a dictatorship of the erudite elitists). They must be rolling in their graves 24/7.
Detroit has lost half of it’s population since the 50’s which is why so many buildings stand abandon.
No need to move the books, the other libraries are already full.
Even if the church is paid for... if there are not enough in the collection plate (not enough bodies in the pews) to pay for the minister, the heat and the lights... it gets abandoned.
the theater with the minivan parked inside was used in an episode of Detroit 187 (tv drama)
Mere child’s play to what’s coming. It will end when the Obamulan hordes attempt to riot & pillage in fly-over country.
It is easy to discover why Detroit is like it is.....Progressive/Socialist/Marxist DEMS were in control for how long????
I WAS being serious! That hand crafted woodwork has value and it should be salvaged and sold. Why hasn’t anyone in Detroit thought of this? I am a grandmother in Texas and it was the first thing I thought of when I saw those beautiful old interiors.
Seems to me if I wanted to get great farmland, Detroit would be a good place to look. I bet I could it at a fraction of the price, that I could in Iowa.
I should have included the U.S. education establishment in my thanks. It has probably done more to bring us to this present point of imminent fiscal and social collapse than the media and the rest of the Marxist-lite bloc combined.
Great minds and all that! :)
Scavenger hunt time - just remember to be armed to the teeth.
I love those old interiors too.
I bought some solid wood hand made doors over in Louisiana and had them cut to fit the doorways in my house. They are stripped to bare wood and they look great. I love stuff like that!
Let’s go to Detroit, I’ll stand guard and you can rip that old stuff out. K? ;*}
Liberal black politicians and unions...see what they have brought us.
That hit me too. Isn’t there supposed to be a whole cottage industry devoted to salvaging old woodwork?
Don’t tell me, let me guess. This is Detroit, after all.
Howmuchyoowannabet that for various liberal government property/health/safety/regulatory reasons no legitimate business can cut through the red tape to be allowed to legally go in and salvage that stuff?
Betcha many other salvage businesses have tried and failed to get permission to do it legally.
You forgot the Corruption that will be worse in all those locals, Just like Detroit's Corruption that is getting cleaned up now...
That is why Karmanos, Roger Penske and one other give Kawama Kilpatrick a "loan" of high 6 figures and promise of a job to get him "Off Stage" in Sept of 08' so that Obama could not be compared to Kawame. I bet that went all the way to the top of the DNC. It was too much of a distraction. Those gents mentioned are now in deep doo-doo as the Feds look into their "loan".
That’s awesome!!! Did you strip them yourself?
Detroit? Ok, I’d love some wainescoting! Tell me when, I’ll pack the heat and the Kevlar.
I would wager a bet that it is safer in downtown Baghdad than my old neighborhood near Detroit City Airport.
Do tell. Here in D.C. it took about a quarter-century before developers were willing to come back in force to build on those “parking lots” and knock down the old boarded-up houses and businesses and start to “gentrify” the NorthEast neighborhoods. I remember downtown D.C. in the seventies and eighties, that was one slow process. But hey? Who is going to invest millions building in a neighborhood when it can all be wiped away in a few “days of rage”?
What is Southeast L.A. looking like these days, I wonder? Rodney King and Reginald Denny were much more recent.
A better idea would be to put a fence around it, call it the Museum of Liberalism and charge admission to schools and tour groups.
“A better idea would be to put a fence around it”
A la “Escape From New York”?
If Hollyweird ever remakes it, Detroit would be the perfect location for filming.
Check out The Onion-Detroit Sold For Scrap-April 5 2006.
Most islamic-infested city in America as well. Coincidence? Nope it’s run by PC multicultural black liberal politicians.
Thanks! Now that’s funny!!!
Who would eat anything grown in that soil after 100+ years of industrial pollution.
Thanks for posting that excellent video by Steven Crowder.
I urge everyone to watch it.
Interesting thought. Detroit is a toxic sewer, due to rampant capitalism, unenforced regulations, illegal dumping, or all of the above.
if we deregulate and get manufacturing jobs to re-appear in the US, will more cities become like this.
I could only look at the first 6 pictures, and then I had to stop, feeling more thandistressed, ashamed. It’s looking at pictures of the decomposition of a corpse.
>>Truly sad and frightening to see how steep the decline has been and how it occurred over a relatively short period.
It has been a 40 year plus slide. The city proper had major issues going back to the 1960s.
“Could it be that you are ....WronG!...”
Sure, I could be wrong. On the other hand, maybe those cites (and other places)have not as yet arrived at the end of their life cycle. life cycles may vary with cities as with animals, plants, humans, etc. :)
“The only problem with this is that the people living in that slum will move to other cities and destroy them also. The country needs to come down on these people and come down hard on them.”
Look at many of the Katrina refugees that are in other states’ cities with no intention of going back. I thank God NJ doesn’t share a border with Louisiana. We had a scandal here where realtors were diverting urban blacks from NJ to Altoona, Pennsylvania; nobody wants the hot potato.
“Seems to me if I wanted to get great farmland, Detroit would be a good place to look.”
The land might be cheaper, but you have to pay a platoon to guard during the harvest (not just to protect workers/equipment, but also so the locusts don’t get your crops at night).
East Side Public Library
(Obama's hope for ALL of the USA)
“I went back to upstate NY over the summer, it was unbelievable in some areas. Complete ghetto, complete lack of care of maintenance, the trees and greenery looked like it was returning to the wild. I kept thinking, “WTH are you people paying nearly all your money to the government for, to live like this?””
Upstate NY had less of a problem “demographically” than it had competing with other states (not countries). As the jobs left, there was no reason for people to stay in areas with fairly harsh winters. They were replaced by the Section 8 underclass, who continue to drive out any that dreamed of staying.
I know just what you mean and must agree to some extent. However, I sincerely hope it isn’t too late.
If I had my way, no one would be allowed to vote until they passed a basic civics exam and could state the reason for their choices. (I know. Silly dream.)
That brick. mansard roofed Second Empire style house on the next to the last row of photos appears to be out in the country. Somebody really should rescue it from collapsing, it’s too nice for such a fate. Heck, most of them are, it’s just sickening for an architecture and history buff such as myself.
Yeah, that was the image that most disturbed me.
I don’t understand why the furniture and fixtures in these places have not been salvaged. I want the chairs from the Presbyterian Church!
They’re just too difficult to trade for crack.
Yes, the similarity is striking. Thanks for the link.
All evidence points to what you say as being true. Perhaps enough people will get over their fear of stating the obvious to come up with some solutions. The right to govern themselves was won long ago. It’s no one’s fault but their own if they lack the ability to do so.
Quotas and Affirmative Action haven’t benefited any group to which they have been extended, but only the brave will point out that fact.
Never been to Detroit (and certainly don’t want to visit now). The city looks post-apocalyptic.
"Feral humans" was the term some FReeper came up with.
