The Marion County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of man after he jumped through the window of a home he is suspected of burglarizing Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

A pit bull chased Laird Butler, 41, after he broke into a Summerfield mobile home at about 2:30 p.m., officials said.

The man suffered cuts all over his body and lost a lot of blood. He managed to ask a neighbor for help.

Butler died as he was being transported to a local hospital, officials said.

Not normally a fan of pit bulls, but if you keep them in the house (except for outside walks for elimination), that can sometimes work out.

At least the dog can’t be charged with murder. Damn good dog.

That’s why the dogs belong in the house.

Was the dog registered???

Was the owner licensed??

Will they now pass a law that your dog must be muzzled and locked in a cage?

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office should hire the dog. The dog did more than the deputies at stopping the burglary.

Proper use of a big dog.

My lab sounds like she is 250 lbs of fury from one side of the door..but you would likely be in danger of being licked to death.

This story is one reason my 3 Lab's are in my bed every night.

Will you add me to your ping pack?

Yes. The window the perp jumped out of was supposed to have been open. Not closed. The intended victim of the burglary was clearly negligent in not "preparing a reasonable escape route". (Fla.Stat. 711.69)

Another benefit is that you can turn the heat waaaay down—you have 3 large bodies to keep you warm. More fun & cheaper than propane.
