Ex-Ill. governor allowed to visit dying wife
AP ^ | January 7, 2011 | MICHAEL TARM

Former Illinois Gov. George Ryan was quietly let out of prison this week and spent two hours visiting his gravely ill wife, federal prosecutors revealed in a court filing Friday.

The federal filing, in which prosecutors opposed a motion to let Ryan out on bail, said the Bureau of Prisons granted the former governor an escorted trip Wednesday evening to the Kankakee, Ill., hospital where his wife Lura Lynn Ryan is being treated for cancer.

A motion filed by Ryan's lawyers on Wednesday had asked that he be released on bail, saying his wife of 55 years is suffering from terminal cancer. He has served three years of a 6 1/2-year sentence for racketeering, conspiracy, tax fraud and making false statements to the FBI.

The prosecutors' filing said it did not dispute that Lura Lynn Ryan is gravely ill. But it cited George Ryan's visit on Wednesday as one of reasons that appellate judges should not release him on bond.

"Although the serious medical problems suffered by his wife are truly unfortunate, they do not warrant special treatment with respect to bail pending appeal in the context of post-conviction proceedings," the filing says.

Too bad he didn’t knife somebody in California, or shoot a drunk kid dead on Long island instead.

He could change his status to illegal alien (oops, sorry, undocumented worker) and then he’d have a get out of jail free card.

And, he’d get free medical care, not have to pay social security, and need no insurance for the car.

Hmmmmmm, thinking, thinking.......

If Illinois does not already have an “Express” Shuttle Bus which runs straight from the governor’s mansion to the state prison, I think their transit authority should consider starting one.

It could be quite a lucrative route.

Every prison has a hospital. Wheel Mrs. Ryan in there for the last days of her life. That way her scumbag husband can see her whenever he wants to.

They are both 76, have been married for 55 years, she probably only has days to live and he's served 1/2 his sentence already. At what point does compassion for a human being enter in to the equation?

Oh yeah, thats right, he's not a human being, he's a Republican.

I’ve been thinking of getting Rosetta Stone to learn Spanish so I can claim to be an illegal Mexican. This whole Productive US Citizen thing is just too damned expensive.

Maybe Ryan should have cheated on her just like John Edwards.

He’s not exactly a child rapist. If he was, the courts would grant this furlough in a second.

Besides, if Obama gets a second term, most of us will be guilty of at least three of those by 2016.

He should have thought about the CONSEQUENCES of his criminal actions before exercising his free will to do them.

Now he has to live with the CONSEQUENCES of his actions.

How about the innocent people who were killed through his greed in granting a license to an illegal who had no business getting a license let alone being in this country for that matter.

No tears shed for Ryan. Let him rot in jail.

Shouldn’t this dude be out of the clink by now? I thought that usually you got parole after doing a third of the stretch. He has already done three years on a six and a half year term.

At what point does compassion for a human being enter in to the equation?

I saved my compassion for the children who burned alive in front of their parents due to Ryans corruption.

If I were King this entire discussion would be moot. In my world the penalty for political corruption would be being skinned alive and then boiled in oil....on Pay Per View.

But I do have a 'compassionate' solution to this issue. Roll the old lady into the prison hospital and let her spend her remaining time with her convict husband by her side.

That way everyone's a winner.

See how compassionate I am?

My god people, married 55 years and you want to deny a last visitation, whoever would suggest that is a scumbag.

Actually, methinks he should be allowed to visit. The hostility comes from what I believe is the almost total lack of respect any of us have any more for our legal system.

Oh, we’re talking Illinois?

Forgot...make that our lack of respect for the Illinois total lack of any legal system whatsoever. That crook is in jail because he didn’t pay off the higher level crooks (read: the Obamaloons).

I said no such thing. If you read my post, I am actually curious that Ryan is still in jail having served over a third of his term. I would have thought he would be eligible for parole and this wouldn’t be an issue. I doubt he is a problem convict.
