Skip to comments.Clarence Dupnik [the sheriff who is blaming Palin]: The Anti-Joe Arpaio Sheriff in Arizona
Posted on 01/09/2011 11:39:30 AM PST by Blood of Tyrants
Until Saturday's rampage against Rep. Gabrielle Giffords left her battling for her life and ended the lives of six others, Clarence Dupnik was not the most famous sheriff in Arizona.
But after a pull-no-punches news conference in which he linked the shooting in Tucson to a poisonous underlying political atmosphere, the Pima County sheriff may soon become known nationally as the anti-Joe Arpaio.
A Democrat, Dupnik called the [Arizona immigration enforcement] law "a national embarrassment" and wrote in the Wall Street Journal that it was "unnecessary ... a travesty, and most significantly ... unconstitutional."

Sounds like the illegals know exactly where they can hide out in Arizona.
Perhaps the people there in Pima County will remember this little episode the next time Sherrif Goebbels comes up for re-election. I’m not getting my hopes up, though.
Apparently no one bothered to tell Dupnik that his job is law enforcement, not political pontification.
The voters can show him the door next election.
If this Sheriff is so wise and all knowing why didn’t he have at least one Deputy on site before the shooting?
“A Democrat, Dupnik ...”
As if one couldn’t tell by just listening to his press conference. The job of a sheriff is to enforce the law, not to distort reality and preach anti-Americanism.
The local sheriff should pull his liberal head out of his rectum and read this article.
The local sheriff may be trying to blame Palin/Rush and other conservatives for his failure to do his job re this self identified potential terrorist. Like why did this nut case have a gun and get by with threatening to kill cops?
What was the relationship if any between the sheriff and the parents/mother of the killer if any.
Why havent we read one thing by the left wing mediots about the parents of this insane killer?
Below is an excellent article re the insane killer with a lot of personal quotes. No where did he profess any love/devotion for Palin/Rush or the Tea Party.
There is no evidence that Loughner was a Sarah Palin fan. There is no evidence that he was associated with the Tea Party or that he was concerned with immigration. Instead, there is a steadily growing heap of evidence that Jared Loughner was suffering from a mental illness
Suspect in rampage called very disturbed
TIM STELLER Arizona Daily Star azdailysun.com
The man arrested for opening fire at a community meeting held by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Saturday killing six people and injuring 13 others disrupted classes at Pima Community College, tried to manipulate his dreams and posted rambling messages on the Internet.
The suspected shooter is Jared Lee Loughner, a 22-year-old who lives on the northwest side. He is mentally unstable and may have had an accomplice, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said Saturday evening.
A former classmate of Loughner at Pima, from which he was suspended Sept. 29 for code-of-conduct violations, said he was obviously very disturbed.
He disrupted class frequently with nonsensical outbursts, said Lynda Sorenson, who took a math class with Loughner last summer at Pima Community Colleges Northwest campus.
Dupnik said the suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers. The threats werent against Giffords, Dupnik said.
Investigators are looking for a second person who may be an accomplice, Dupnik said. We are not convinced he acted alone, Dupnik said of the shooter. We have photos, he said, of a man in his 50s.
Theres some reason to believe that (the shooter) came to this location with another individual. And theres reason to believe the other individual would in some way be involved, he said.
Loughner has several online accounts, which suggest he has spent most of his life on the northwest side: His MySpace profile says he attended Thornydale Elementary School, Tortolita Middle School and Mountain View High School.
As a middle school student, Loughner was kind of an outcast, said Shannin Macey, who said via e-mail she attended Tortolita and Mountain View with him.
In high school, Loughner was in jazz band and played the saxophone, but he dropped out in junior year, said Tommy Marriotti, who was a high-school friend of Loughner. At the time he dropped out, Loughner was having drug problems, Marriotti said, but he seemed to do well once he started taking classes at Pima.
Loughner attended Pima courses from summer 2005 until he withdrew in October after his suspension, the college said.
He tried to enlist in the Army in 2008 but was rejected, said First Sgt. Brian Homme, who oversees Army recruiting in Tucson. Loughner was sent to Phoenix to take a test and physical, but he was found to be unqualified, Homme said.
Loughner registered to vote for the first time in 2006, said Chris Roads, Pima Countys registrar of voters. He registered as an independent and last voted in the 2008 general election.
Sorenson, Loughners classmate at Pima, said he was asked to leave the pre-algebra class several times and eventually was barred from class.
Pima officials said in a news release that from February to September 2010, Loughner had five contacts with PCC police for classroom and library disruptions at Northwest and West campuses.
Another Pima classmate, Lydian Ali, said Loughner would frequently laugh aloud to himself during the advanced-poetry class they attended. Only about 16 people were in the class, so Loughners behavior stood out, Ali said.
It almost seemed like he was on his own planet, because his comments would have nothing to do with what we were talking about, Ali said.
Loughners online accounts contain some political comments but are dominated by bizarre discussions of his desire to establish a new currency and his disdain for what he considered the publics low literacy rates. He also wrote threatening and despairing messages.
WOW! Im glad i didnt kill myself. Ill see you on National T.v.! This is foreshadow .... why doesnt anyone talk to me? .. he posted on MySpace Dec. 14.
On Dec. 13, he wrote: I dont feel good: Im ready to kill a police officer! I can say it.
In a posting on YouTube, Loughner wrote repeatedly about a new currency. Im thinking of creating a new currency, he wrote. Therefore, Im thinking of a design for my new coins size, shape, color, material, and image to start a new money system.
He also wrote repeatedly about literacy. In a message on YouTube, Loughner wrote: The majority of people, who reside in District-8 are illiterate hilarious. I dont control your English grammar structure, but you control your English grammar structure.
In a message posted on his MySpace account, titled Goodbye friends,Loughner said: Dear friends...please dont be mad at me. The literacy rate is below 5%. I havent talked to one person who is literate. It was unclear when it was posted.
In a MySpace profile, Loughner said My favorite interest was reading, and I studied grammar. Conscience dreams were a great study in college. Conscious dreaming is trying to manipulate your dreams, an interest Loughner pursued, Marriotti said.
He lists among his favorite books Mein Kampf and The Communist Manifesto. But he also includes a broad variety of other titles, including: Animal Farm, Brave New World, To Kill a Mockingbird, and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.
In another YouTube message, Loughner said: I know whos listening: Government Officials, and the People. Nearly all the people, who dont know this accurate information of a new currency, arent aware of mind control and brainwash methods. If I have my civil rights, then this message wouldnt have happen.
In conclusion, my ambition - is for informing literate dreamers about a new currency; in a few days, you know Im conscience dreaming! Thank you!
In a YouTube video dated Dec. 15, titled Introduction: Jared Loughner, he describes himself as a U.S. military recruit who had applied to join the Army.
In the video, Loughner makes a rambling mention of MEPS in Phoenix an apparent reference to the Military Entrance Processing Station in the state capital that all Arizona recruits from every branch of service pass through before leaving for basic training.
Every United States military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix is receiving one mini bible before the tests, it said. Jared Loughner is a United States military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix. Therefore, Jared Loughner is receiving one mini bible before the tests.
I didnt write a belief on my Army application and the recruiter wrote on the application: None.
Sgt. Homme declined to say why Loughner was rejected, citing confidentiality laws.
Loughner has had at least two minor run-ins with police, online court records show.
In October 2007, Loughner was cited by the Pima County Sheriffs Department for possession of drug paraphernalia, a charge that was dismissed in November 2007 when he completed a diversion program.
One year later, in October 2008, Loughner faced a local charge in Marana Municipal Court. That charge was also dismissed following the completion of a diversion program in March 2009.
Court records indicate the Marana case file is due to be purged in December 2013. Its unclear what the exact charge was.
Grant Wiens, 22, attended Mountain View High School with Loughner, although they were not in the same grade. Wiens also took a class at Pima Community College with Loughner, where they occasionally talked, he said.
He was a guy in high school who definitely had his opinions on stuff and didnt seem to care what people thought of him, Wiens said. He did his own thing.
Star reporters Carol Ann Alaimo, Alex Dalenberg, Fernanda Echavarri, Patrick Finley, Ernesto Portillo Jr. and Sarah Trotto contributed to this report.
The lying bsing sheriff is hiding something like what he hid to protect the mentally ill lib killer.
Sheriff, how did this lib have a gun after he threatened to kill cops?
Sheriff, what is your relationship with his parents/mother?
Don't know if this is true or not, but it's revealing:
The Dupnik is a traditional folk dance that requires the dancing couple to acknowledge their presence by first bowing to each other then turn around and ram their "dupa" or rear ends together.
The SOB has been in office since 1980. He’s so deep in the Democratic machine in Tucson that it would take an explosion to get him out.
Oops! There I go, encouraging others to dynamite their opponents , < /sarcasm >.
The question that should be asked of Dupnik, but hasn’t been, is this:
“Sheriff, you keep referring to the rhetoric of cable news and talk radio. Do you have any evidence showing a relationship between that and this shooting?”
“You have indicated that Loughner had previously had run-ins with the police and had threatened to kill people. Why did your department allow him 1) to buy a gun, and 2) to remain free?”
“Dupnik, referring to the troubled suspect, 22-year-old Jared Loughner.”
‘Troubled Suspect’? A full blown lunatic is ‘troubled’?
Actual Topic: Sheriffs News Conference Yesterday
Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik
I think people such as yourself need to remember when you are so intent on blaming what voters have said as the cause for this tragedy, why not mention the rhetoric from Democrat politicians and liberal talking heads including:
If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun, Obama said in Philadelphia last night. Because from what I understand, folks in Philly like a good brawl. Ive seen Eagles fans.
And I need you to go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors. I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face.
Or John Kerry who said on the Bill Maher show: I could have gone to 1600 Pennsylvania and killed the real bird with one stone.
Or Howard Dean I hate the Republicans and everything they stand for
and: This is a struggle between good and evil and were the good?
and we need to remember that the enemy here is George Bush, not each other.
Or Senator Chuck Schumer who called a flight attendant a bitch.
Or the Florida Democrats who ran an ad calling for the assassination of Donald Rumsfeld
Or New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi who called for Senator Schumer to put a bullet between the presidents eyes?
Or Jonathan Chait who said I hate President George W. Bush.
Or singer Rickie Lee Jones who aid of President Bush Youre an ignorant, low-class, opportunistic man, both personally and politically, who does everything for political gain and nothing for the wellbeing of the people, and you should not be in office, and the kind of fascism youre perpetrating on our country we dont want, and youre out. Were done with you. Ffffhgggmm.
And when asked if she would be willing to take Bush out for the benefit of democracy? If I say that, I might get arrested when I go back. And I have to go home. Shes thinking it out carefully. I guess the question is, would I kill anyone? And the answer is, no. But would I feel sorry if someone killed him? No, I wouldnt. It would depend on who killed him, I guess.
Or The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn where they superimposed the words Snipers Wanted over an image of Bush delivering his acceptance speech at the Republican convention.
Or Nobel Peace Prize winner Betty Williams who said she could kill President Bush?
Or Randi Rhodes who joked about killing the President?
Or Reverend Wright who called Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, Condoskeeza [sic] Rice.
Or Englands Charlie Brooker who wrote: On November 2, the entire civilised world will be praying, praying Bush loses. And Sods law dictates hell probably win, thereby disproving the existence of God once and for all. The world will endure four more years of idiocy, arrogance and unwarranted bloodshed, with no benevolent deity to watch over and save us. John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Jr where are you now that we need you?
How would you like to wake up next to that man every morning in bed?
Sheriffs are politicians (so are police chiefs hired by mayors). They run for office and are elected. We need to remember that.
Excellent question! His remarks are typical of placing the blame elsewhere because he feel directly responsible himself. Psychiatric projection.
I LOVE Babeu! I live in Maricopa and he’s my sherrif. I certainly feel more protected here in Pinal county than I would living in Pima county with that moron Dupnik. Some people have wondered if Dupnik is getting kickbacks from the drug cartels since he was so vehemently against 1070 when it was passed.
Yep, I called that just reading the headline.
I used to live in Tucson, when the city and Pima County were old-school conservative.
THen the balck-taggers moved in, then the Granola bars from Califlower - now Tucson is laying off cops so they can ‘afford’ to give free bus passes to “poor people”.
While there are good folks that still live there, I spent Aug of this year there - and it didn’t take long to soo the area is a hive of barking moonbats.
A shame really, I love the winter weather, don’t know if I will ever go back.
Good luck Mr Rogers, I think you will need it.
I love to wake up every morning. Him in my bed? He looks half dead now, can’t imagine mornings, Thank God.
So he made death threats before and is a known mental case and the police DIDN'T arrest him? This just goes to prove that the police CANNOT and in some cases WILL NOT protect the public at large.
The sheriff has no say so in who is allowed to buy a gun. Either the state can run a background check or the state can do nothing and the dealers will run the background check through the FBI. In this case, unless the nut had been involuntarily confined to a mental hospital for more than an observation period, or unless the police had arrested him for his threats where a judge had ordered him to surrender all firearms until he was judged not to be a threat (or he was convicted of a felony) there would have been no reason not to sell him a firearm.
It appears that Loughner should have been arrested by the police for making threats and charged. While in custody, it would have been fairly evident that he was mentally unbalanced and should be committed to a mental hospital.
Sheriff Sputnik going off during the presser yesterday has to be one of the most bizarre things I have ever witnessed in public life. I am not kidding. He used the mass murder as his personal soapbox and should be fired immediately for his irresponsibility, jumping to baseless conclusions and such.
Sheriff Dupnik allowed the shooter to obtain a gun.
Despite the fact that he was a known threat.
Even the local college banned him from campus.
Dupnik is responsible for a lot of crap, but he has no say whatsoever in who gets to own a gun in Pima County. Arizona uses the NICS database or a state-issued CCW permit to authorize gun sales.
Now, had the Pima County prosecutor not allowed the boy to skate on his drug charges 2 years ago, he might have been denied when the gun store did the NICS check. That might have changed things.
“Dupnik said the suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers.”
When the FBI did its background check on the pyscho, surely they contacted the sheriff’s office to see if they had anything on the psycho.
Did Dupnik hid these events from the FBI?
If so, why did he not point them out to the FBI and warn them?
Contact with law enforcement is not enough and should not be enough to prevent a person from exercising their 2nd Amendment right. If I had my way, the 1968 GCA would be repealed and ex-cons would have ALL their rights restored upon release from prison. If they have a second felony conviction, THEN, they would lose their 2A rights.
Looks like Soros’s long lost brother
Also, unless you are involuntarily admitted to a mental facility and declared to be mentally unstable, you don not lose your 2A right.
I think internet journalists will have to find out the answers to your questions. The MSM is pretty much good for nothing. They have no credibility whatsoever. I’m not even watching today. Totally prefer to get my news from the internet.
Read some of my posts above.
Don’t forget Spike Lee who said that Bush ought to be shot with a 44 Bulldog.
I see you’re from that area. The sheriff was born in 1936 yet I cannot find any reference to military service, despite his turning of age during the Korean era. Is the Sheriff a draft dodger?
Not for nuthin, but someone born in late 1936 would have been 14 at the outbreak of the war. He would have been 17 at the time of the cease fire.
Not quite draft age.
Not for nuthin, but someone born in late 1936 would have been 14 at the outbreak of the war. He would have been 17 at the time of the cease fire.
Not quite draft age.
He also would have turned 18 when there was a draft, which didn’t end until 1973. It always amazes me when I check up on the “tough guys’ who were quite willing in their youth to watch as other men left to train and serve. By the way, Sherrif Joe served and he’s basically in the same age group.
“Is the Sheriff a draft dodger?”
I doubt it. He would have been 17 when the Korea War ended, and he might not have been drafted during peacetime. He joined the police in 1958, so he would have been 22 at the time.
Dupnik has been sheriff forever. I respect him for his service, while disagreeing completely with his views. As a local bigwig, Dupnik knows all the local Political types so this was personal to him. This has been very emotional for all of Tucson and while his comments since the first press conference have been more extreme, Saturday’s comments came close to my own views. I heard him talk about not just the news media, but all media and cultural discourse we expose to our children and the mentally vulnerable.
There are plenty of families in my area who've had near constant military service with young men joining almost as a family tradition; not necessarily career men but guys who at least do something. There are plenty of families like that and they tend toward one political party. Then there are the others, who when you peel the onion you reveal a pattern of nonservice...there is always a reason not to join up in war or peace, regardless. The latter group tends to have plenty of examples from both parties...sad sacks all, and over several generations.
Not trying to argue here, but not everyone was drafted. And not everyone wants to volunteer to go to war. It doesnt make them less a man.
If someone stood for the draft, and their “number did not come up” are they in the same boat as someone that took off, got half a dozen deferments, or otherwise “avoided” the draft?
As an example, all of my uncles that served in WWII—every one of six of them saw combat. Some were recognized for heroism in one way or another. Every single one of them was dragged kicking and screaming into the army.
They are all good men. They just did not want to die in combat.
For five of them, that was accomplished.
You make an excellent case for the draft! My point was simply that so many of the actions of the tough guys and super patriots don’t correspond with their actions as young men. If Dave Keane, The Huckster, Mitch Daniels, Newt or Mitt don’t like when somebody points that out, it’s too bad.
Or Dick Cheney.
I assume this sheriff is elected,
so it’s not surprise he’s a lefty,
since the rep from the area is a dem.
I had to look this post up, because now, thanks to you, every time I hear “Dupnik,” all I can think of is this ridiculous Polish dance, lol.
