As a Certified Federal Career Coach and Resume Writer, I regularly speak with individuals (primarily first-time federal job seekers) who are interested and determined to secure job with the federal government. Who can blame them? A government career brings with it outstanding benefits and unlimited promotional potential, not to mention that federal employees earn higher average salaries than private-sector workers in more than eight out of 10 occupations (as determined by a USA TODAY analysis). So what's problem? Well, to be frank, securing a government job can be a job itself.

My little post office has two full time employees. Its no mistake they’re mother and daughter.
Describes a certain state of SC agency I used to work for. A slot would be posted, there would be a few token interviews, and then someone’s pal from outside would be hired, qualified or not. No doubt the same most everywhere.
All I have is piddly veteran’s pref. What few I have ever applied for regarding the few I am qualified for nothing happened anyway.
The closest I got to even being acknowledged was for a fireman/oiler on a NOAA vessel, not that I am that wild about going back on the water but it was at a time early last year when the job situation at work was really awful. The guy sent me a form response. The rest went nowhere as usual.

Yeah — look at those geniuses at the TSA as great examples of how sharp you have to be to land a Federal Job.
When you are too stupid to flip burgers, and you are a minority, female or disabled, you just have to scrawl a big old “X” on the application form and you are in.
Tell me about it...once it became clear the engineering consulting firm I worked for was NOT going to get our contract with CALTRANS (CA DoT) renewed, I started applying for federal employment. This was in Feb 2010.
I got no response to my resume, whatsoever, until I completely re-wrote my application in June, and got my first job list referrals in July. At the end of July, my firm "furloughed" me, because they didn't have the guts to tell me I was not going to get back to work for them, but wanted to use my credentials as an engineer to try to secure jobs.
I got my first interview at the end of August, followed by another in early September. No more interviews after that.
A week before Halloween, I got a job offer from the first interview. After 3 months of unemployment benefits, I snapped it up, even if there was no relocation benefits offered (I eventually had to move the family 2500 miles on my own.)
Soon after that offer, I received another offer, from a federal job I never interviewed for, which would have required me to move clear across the country, to DC...again, out of my own pocket.
I finally left California on December 1st and started my federal job on December 6th.
Was it a lot of pain? Definitely.
Would I do it again? Maybe, depends on the circumstances.
Is it worth it? The security and benefits alone make it worth my effort...and I am quietly planting some Conservative seeds in the office.

I must had applied for 500 Fed jobs after the Navy. I also thought my Vet’s preference would actually mean something. I filled up the filing cabinets with resumes and was never called for interviews - even though my experience was often a dead-match. I worked other jobs and kept applying. Finally I got lucky and the boss doing the hirng was an ex-navy guy. Got an “in” at GS-09...
Still, it was worth it. Got two promotions in 5 years since I actually worked (which doesn’t always matter..but I got lucky in that there were a few positions that required a bit of smarts and a work ethic). Still, it was comical seeing the level of output of many of the heavy set ladies. (I’m a serious minority and have to just smile when they discuss Oprah and get into those “Imma tell you girl” conversations).
True, especially at higher ratings. These jobs are “wired” for a contractor or military member already woking in the office. Often they are only advertised for a couple days so the outsider can’t respond.

A friend of mine sent me (and others) this email with his musings. Long story short - government jobs suck wealth out of the economy, private jobs create wealth. Fits right in with this thread:

The economy and the budget are out of sync. What happened?
Consider the (un)employment situation. Government employment has increased while ‘the private sector’ loses jobs. The public sector (including state and local governments and their outlays for public unions, including teachers, etc.) increases its number of employees and pays them more than those in the private sector, which drives (read: is) the economy. The public sector does not contribute to the economy, but represents instead a permanent and increasing drain on it. Its salaries and retirement benefits must come from money generated by the private sector. Has anyone checked the ensuing balance? I think that it might show the public employees’ pay and (generous) benefits offset much of the economy generated by private industry.
In other words, we in the private sector must work harder to pay those in the public sector, which represents an expense item rather than income. Government (and public union) employees receive generous pension benefits, while those of us in private industry must fend for ourselves in the face of a shrinking economy.
And the more that government grows (to provide services to an increasingly decreasing private sector that requires government benefits because it cannot afford to pay its own way), the more it costs.
The solution seems so simple. Cut government expense and allow the economy to grow. The alternative is ever-increasing government and ever-decreasing means to generate the money needed to run it. Government can rely on taxes only so long as there is money to be taxed. The result is easy to predict—self-destruction.
The current situation is counter-productive. How do we go about solving this problem?

I still keep my eyes on USAjobs and once in a great while see something that isn’t a doctor/nurse/medical or high end professional slot. I haven’t given up on it either. My position is kind of weird anyway and a long story.

You may be surprised to find there are quite a few hardcore conservatives among the federal workforce — and more than a few FReepers!
This is completely irrelevant.
American can no longer afford hundreds of thousands of government bureaucrats, your tax paid salaries, your generous tax paid health care benefits or your high end retirements package's, etc...
We simple cannot afford it any more...We're being choked off.
Don't you get it?
