Hezbollah resigns from Lebanese government
Naharnet ^

Just crossing the wires in Lebanon's media outlets.

5:10pm Bassil: We announce our resignation from government and we turn to the prime minister to speed up the formation of a new Cabinet.

Lebanon's constitution basically says that if 1/3 of Cabinet walks, then governing coalition fails and new elections must be held. From what I understand there are 30 seats, Hezbollah controls 10 of them. They all walked and I believe a couple others walked with them.

If Hariri can't put together a new coalition quick, the government collapses and new elections must be held. Wouldn't be shocked if Hezbollah makes an armed power grab for Lebanese government instiutions. Also some serious concerns about street violence/civil war in Lebanon.

That didn’t take long. I read your post a few hours back. I guess they weren’t kidding. Threaten to pull out a few hours back, then go ahead and do it . . . this is potentially a very big deal.

Big concerns

1) street violence/civil war in Lebanon

2) Hezbollah makes a power play to take over the government

It’s official now. Wonder what Hariri’s official status is at this point. He is actually in a meeting with Obama right now. So is Obama meeting with an ex-prime minister??

The Special Tribunal was about to issue indictments on the Hariri assasination blaming Hezbollah.

This pull-out and the next several actions by Hezbollah have been already scripted by Damascus and Tehran and point to an armed take-over.

Obama gets bitch-slapped again by Syria and Iran.

Hariri’s meeting with Obama ends

Future News reported on Wednesday that Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s meeting with US President Barack Obama ended, adding that no statement was issued following their meeting.

That Hariri was in Washington when this happened is no coincidence; it's a show of contempt for Obama.

Ostensibly, the UN is supposed to issue their report on the assassination of the murder of Hariri Sr. on Saturday. Looks like an advance copy was leaked to Hezbollah.

Analysts do not expect to see any military conflict between Hizbollah and the Sunni Muslim followers of Prime Minister Saad al Hariri.

However, they did not rule out the return of street protests, skirmishes, bombings and political killings, like that of Rafik al Hariri, Saad’s slain father.

Seems to me the question is not “will Bibi have the stones”, but the military... the recent resignations of the previous command and new hard line aggressive commander appointed bode positive; but, given the recent suicidal bent Israel has been on and that Hezbollah is 10 best armed military in the world, it will be a terrible war.

The resignation is a prelude to Hezbollah and its Christian ally taking over the government to prevent the deportation of those complicit in the Harri (Sr) assassination to the UN.

I can’t believe it’s not the lead story on FOX.

I hate to say it but if there is breaking news, especially foreign, I flip the TV to CNN. Fox has always been woefully slow on breaking news and CNN still holds a considerable edge in that department. Even MSNBC is quicker with facts on unfolding events.

I'd be very suprised if a U.N. report actually put the blame on Hezbollah. It will probably be more like the sinking of the South Korean ship, where the U.N. condemned the act without naming anyone.

Barak: Israel closely monitoring Lebanon situation

The fall of Lebanon’s national unity government following the resignation of the Hezzbollah ministers and their allies has raised concerns in Israel. Defense minister Ehud Barak addressed the recent developments at a closed door session Wednesday and noted that Israel was “closely monitoring” events in Lebanon. (Attila Somfalvi )

Wonder if the analysts know their history. The 1975 civil war started with a worker’s strike. That led to a political killing of a town mayor. The situation spiraled out of control after that and lasted until the 90s.

I'd be very surprised if a U.N. report actually put the blame on Hezbollah.

I'll be surprised if they release any report at all. The UN has a long and ignominious track record of acquiescing to - when not actively aiding and abetting - Islamist thuggery.

Clinton: Lebanon crisis is effort to subvert justice

1.12.11
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Lebanon’s coalition crisis on Wednesday was a transparent attempt to subvert justice but vowed that the work of the UN-backed special tribunal would continue.

“We view what happened today as a transparent effort by those forces inside Lebanon as well as interests outside Lebanon to subvert justice and undermine Lebanon’s stability and progress,” Clinton told a news conference in Doha, Qatar, where she is attending a meeting of regional leaders.
