In the span of a single news cycle, Republicans got a jarring reminder of two forces that could prevent them from retaking the presidency in next year.
At sunrise in the East on Wednesday, Sarah Palin demonstrated that she has little interest or capacity in moving beyond her brand of grievance-based politics. And at sundown in the West, Barack Obama reminded even his critics of his ability to rally disparate Americans around a message of reconciliation.
Palin was defiant, making the case in a taped speech she posted online why the nations heated political debate should continue unabated even after Saturdays tragedy in Tucson. And, seeming to follow her own advice, she swung back at her opponents, deeming the inflammatory notion that she was in any way responsible for the shootings a blood libel. (See: Shooting presents 2012 test)
Obama, speaking at a memorial service at the University of Arizona, summoned the country to honor the victims, and especially9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, by treating one another with more respect. I want America to be as good as Christina imagined it, he said.
Its difficult to imagine a starker contrast.
Many Republicans believe that its mostly the media that is obsessed with Palin, and that theres little chance she could win the partys nomination. (See: Republicans disappointed at Palin)
But if she does manage to, Wednesday illustrated why so many in the GOP fear that it would be disastrous.
The former Alaska governor has a knack for supplying rhetoric that will delight her supporters, send her critics howling and invariably create a frenzy of coverage. But her response suggests she is capable of hitting just that one note.

Oh, please tell me I didn’t read this right. No one is this stupid. Who does this lame brain think he’s talking to?
In what sense are we to assume that ‘we’ thrive in the US?
I need some definitions. I must be needing a a dictionary.
I didn't think so. He ran against an empty suit, who'd never actually served in a leadership position, had a carefully crafted political career where he didn't have to bother showing up or make decisions, and the teleprompter in chief was the victor.
Palin’s not my first, second or third choice for president. But she's higher on the list than what the ‘party’ wants us to choose.
Obama is the President. Palin was responding to accusations of the last freaking week. There is a difference asshats!! Damnit what is wrong with people.
What’s really ironic is that Obama comes to Arizona to “unite” the people and play the role of healer when it is his policies that have created the whole mess. From what I’ve read the shooter has been angry with the Congresswomen for four years over illegal immigration and Obama chooses not to close the border. Pure chutzpah.

It's simple actually. All the Politico propagandists had their hit pieces written long before Gov Palin released her video message.
Another hit-job on Sarah by Jonathan Martin. This guy is real gutter-level POS. He’s printed more bald-faced lies about Palin than just about anyone. I wouldn’t be surprised if Obama is paying him under the table for his work.
BTW, Mr. Martin, please share with me the methodology of your analysis that missed the overall message of hope and healing in President Palin's video speech:
What you said - reflects my first thoughts as well.
Sarah Palin is not even a true political figure. She holds no public office. She’s just a woman with a family. The MSM monkeys should leave her alone.
They ARE already fretting that she will run...
The problem with Sarah’s video reply to the left-wing smears is one of branding. Obama’s team did a great job in branding the memorial service for the victims of the Tucson massacre. “Together we Thrive” has a nice ring to it. T-shirt, key chain and coffee mug sales should be through the roof. She needs a similarly catchy word or phrase that sums up her position. Maybe a “No Libels” campaign? Just a thought.

Well, no. The shooter was crazier than a s***house rat and there was no rational reason for him to shoot anybody, no real cause other than he was completely crazy.
Sarah made a great point that NO ONE (right or left) influenced this guy. His main beef with the Congresswoman was she couldn’t answer his bats*** crazy question, “What is government if words have no meaning?” (as if anyone could)
I wouldn’t blame her if she just packed it in and went back to being a good wife and mother. Why should she have to put up with the left’s “death by a thousand cuts”? I’m beginning to believe this country doesn’t deserve a caring, sincere person like Sarah leading it. As the British say, she should tell them to “piss off”...
Really, Barry? What if Christina liked or admired Sarah Palin? Would you still say that?
When I lived in Iowa I loved me some pork chop on a stick at the state fair! Looks like this JourOlist liked one too many.
Jonathan Martin is..., how to put it best: Jonathan Martin is a Dupnik.
