Those first few puffs on a cigarette can within minutes cause genetic damage linked to cancer, US scientists said in a study released Saturday.

In fact, researchers said the "effect is so fast that it's equivalent to injecting the substance directly into the bloodstream," in findings described as a "stark warning" to those who smoke.

The study is the first on humans to track how substances in tobacco cause DNA damage, and appears in the peer-reviewed journal Chemical Research in Toxicology, issued by the American Chemical Society.~snip

"The results reported here should serve as a stark warning to those who are considering starting to smoke cigarettes," Hecht said.

I don't care for the most part what adults do to their own bodies, as long as I don't have to pay for their poor choices. But 95% of smokers started as teenagers or children, then became addicted and can't kick the habit.

This isn't the greatest study, it has flaws and needs to be validated, but addicting children has never been a conservative value.

Take your strawman and peddle it to your fellow DUers.

If everyone that ever smoked died of cancer there would not be very many people on earth. The study is hog wash.

What does this say about my parents and all of my ancestors
who cooked their food and heated their homes with wood
and breathed in a lot of smoke in the process?
Or is this just about “tobacco” smoke?
Or what?

You will not find common sense on this forum when it comes to smoking.

Instead you’ll get the anomalies thrown at you like, “My grandfather smoked every day of his life and lived to be 100.”

If God Himself told them smoking and second-hand smoke was bad for their health they still wouldn’t believe it.

Make tobacco illegal, I’m sure that will solve your problem.

...peddle it to your fellow DUers.

Smoking is mostly a liberal trait. Addicting children too, although some here seem to tolerate it.

Millions of conservatives have including myself, have marched into voting booths and freely chosen to restrict cigarettes. Democracy works.

And, I claim that I have a trillions dollars in my bank account.

These people are crazy freaks. Why do we keep giving money to them and listening to them? When will sanity return?????

BTW, I am no smoker. I hate the stuff, and I know it isn't good for you, but this study is preposterous.

Yep, same as Marijuana.

Government needs to control which leaves we smoke.

Yes, and you realize that what ultimately kills you is breathing, right? Oxygen’s extremely electron-greedy nature is part of what wears our bodies down and ultimately kills you.

Smoking is a small pleasure (for some people) that is no worse than many of the other things people do.

And I’m sure if God himself told anti-smokers that smoking was perfectly ok, they still wouldn’t believe it. :p

Smoking is mostly a liberal trait.

So much gene damage might have something to do with why they are so very, very stupid. I have often noticed how much smoking "liberals" do.

And lets leave out that he’s probably lived in a city his whole life and breathed exhaust fumes and smoke from factories because that doesn’t fit your agenda does it Mommy.

Not when it is the number one preventable cause of cancer. You are factually wrong.
