Those first few puffs on a cigarette can within minutes cause genetic damage linked to cancer, US scientists said in a study released Saturday.
In fact, researchers said the "effect is so fast that it's equivalent to injecting the substance directly into the bloodstream," in findings described as a "stark warning" to those who smoke.
The study is the first on humans to track how substances in tobacco cause DNA damage, and appears in the peer-reviewed journal Chemical Research in Toxicology, issued by the American Chemical Society.~snip
"The results reported here should serve as a stark warning to those who are considering starting to smoke cigarettes," Hecht said.

LOL
And what about some of us that have made an effort to understand scientific methodology and actually read many of the studys that have been done? AND, come to the conclusion that the government should ,pun intended, butt out.
Of peer reviewed studys on ETS, 80% find no association with cancer.
Ive seen its effects for myself and dont need a plethora of medical studies to know it is bad for you.
So, are you admitting to willful ignorance, or would you rather take anecdotal evidence than scientific studys?
Is smoking bad for you? Yes, but not nearly as much as the government and anti-smoking cabals would have you believe.
Here’s a quote from your “study.”
“We can’t say that we’ve found a cause-and-effect relationship between smoking and decreased thinking ability,”
So, essentially, it’s just more propaganda. Smoking is a bad habit, no question. But small amounts of smoking is unlikely to lead to any major health problem.
It only does jean damage if you drop hot ashes in your lap.
Don’t you know? Second hand smoke is WORSE for you than first hand smoke! Thus, it’s better to smoke than to be around other smokers! Oh, wait, but then you have to inhale your OWN second hand smoke! I’m so confused!
It wasn’t my study, I didn’t post the article nor did I say this study was valid.
A little testy? Perhaps you need a smoke?
Tar kills, nicotine isn't all that bad for you, and I actually love it.
I was smoking about a pack to a pack and a half a day. Ive had maybe 10 cigs in the last 2 months. Didn't quit at all. Switched to ecigs. (nicotine vaporizer that looks a lot like a cig) If you switch make sure what you get can handle the Royal Smoker 808 cartomizers (Ceramic, not cotton and no sorts of glues or anything). What I “vape” (vaporize) is mostly flue cured tobacco flavor nicotine liquid. 36 mg liquid is too strong. Stick to 28ish.
Feeling great. Food tastes better, and lungs are happy. Best of all this stuff isn't taxed, and I can still enjoy an after dinner “smoke” (vape).
Expect to replace batteries every other month and pay no more than $1.50 per cartomizer. Liquid... 10 to 20 bucks for 30 ml. 1 ml = about 15 cigs. You can refill a cart 4 or 5 times before it is shot. Batteries cost 8 to 15 bucks depending on what type. (Yeah, it's a lot cheaper than smoking)
You will want a PCC (Portable battery powered pocket charger aprox the size of a pack of smokes $30 to $40ish)
Stay away from the “Branded” stuff. It's all proprietary and sh!tty quality.
You can start out paying about 30 to 40 bucks to see if it is for you.

Money in tobacco company stocks, huh?
I notice you didn't answer my questions, just the statement that, sort of, agreed with your premise.
Randall Flagg has been telling everyone about ecigs too.
Other than become an addict and being unable to quit.
Did you not post the link?
I’m a complete convert. Love my ecigs.
Yes, it is. People have their own prejudices and jump at these ridiculous studies. They claim that people use anecdotal evidence incorrectly but believe a study on 12 people which says what they would like to believe?
I grew up around smokers and non-smokers and all but a few of them are dead now, golly gee.
Puleeeze, I smoked for 35 years. Quit 3 years ago and haven't had a smoke of anything since. No cigarettes, no cigars, no pipe, nothing.
It's not addictive, it's a habit. Nothing more.
Did you not read the phrase “small amounts of smoking”? Many people do smoke occasionally in small amounts and do not become addicted.
