Posted on 01/16/2011 6:09:35 AM PST by Dr. Scarpetta
So few government officials say what they believe and mean it.
That's part of what made it so refreshing when Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik offered his bare-knuckles assessment of public dialogue in the immediate aftermath of Saturday's mass murder in Arizona.
This is nothing new, of course, and maybe the sheriff was jumping to conclusions in his remarks on Saturday. Still, he said what he believed and he hasn't backed down.
He stood by his comments after FBI Director Robert Mueller described such a portrayal as "premature."
He's stayed true to his words despite the predictable backlash from some of the thundering voices he referenced from radio and TV talk shows.
Dupnik, a 50-year veteran of police work, was the right man in the right place to be the face of law enforcement in this horrible crime scene.
He offered the right blend of providing what information he could without jeopardizing the investigation. And he offered an opinion on something he had obviously considered in the past at a time when the most people would hear it.
It was a gutsy move.
He did not back off.
I'm glad he spoke up and happy that he refused to be swayed.

...inspite of the facts...
Perhaps the voters will offer their point of view in the next election for Sheriff ...
Is this Owens guy saying he, himself, was in on the conspiracy?
If Sheriff Dubnik knew that the rhetoric had hit the flash-point in Tucson and if his department was aware that the shooter was deranged, why didn’t he station a patrolman at the political event?
Joseph P. Owens, Editor
As did OJ Simpson.
Eric Fuller chose his sheriff for a role model.
Sadly, you cannot fix stupid.
Owens is another liberal around here you can’t talk to. I’m surrounded by them.
This once-great newspaper endorsed Obama. Now it's part of a huge corporation.
You Betcha Dupa, he’s a Dupnik!
It was absolutely the opposite of what his job description is. There is no rush to judgement in law enforcement. Those “refreshing” words would have you suspended then fired from the NYPD.
Sheriff Dipshit was supposed to be the “face of law enforcement” — not the face of his personal point of view — especially one that may derail criminal charges against the shooter.
While genius has its limits , stupidity does not.
Too bad his point of view was constricted by the size of the peep-hole that replaced his umbilicus, through which he looks out at the world.
Boy is this one a stretch.
He is a Sheriff.
He is suppose to be investigating.
I didn’t know his presser was really a stump speech.
Lefties just don’t understand the difference between Professional responsibilities and Personal diatribes.
When we understand that they EXPECT Zero to keep spreading the Commie/Fascist/Socialist agenda, rather than serve as POTUS the problems become clear.
Socialize Health Care: We can’t afford it...doesn’t matter, it’s the agenda of the Left.
Runaway spending...it is driving the Nat Debt through the roof......doesn’t matter, we can print money.
The Left NEVER concerns itsself about the consequences of their actions. Just the ability to pull out their list of hairbrain schemes and put a check in the box.
When Dupnik first opined about vitriol immediately following the massacre, I was glad he spilled his guts. We are witnessing his liberal house of cards coming down. I will be a tad surprised if he keeps his position through the end of his term.
I always thought if you were dead wrong and no one could convince you otherwise you were dumber than a box of rocks.
Sheriff Dupnik and his Media Dupes are purposefully diverting attention from the truth: an incompetent, political hack, posing as a law enforcement officer, allowed an insane mass murderer kill six people, despite clear indications and documented evidence that the individual was a threat to the community.
Always follow the money trail.
Newspapers have long had an editorialist on staff called a “sob sister”, whose purpose is just to outrage the public, so that they will buy papers just so they can be angry.
Traditionally their employment was based on how much hate mail they could generate, so much so that some “sob sisters” later bragged that they sent themselves hundreds of letters that included death threats, even threats to burn down the newspaper building. Their editors loved it.
It didn’t matter what they subject was. They would advocate nun beating and puppy stomping if it worked. At times they were bitterly racist and antisemitic, if the public wasn’t, or anti-racist and anti-antisemitic if the public were. They would call for hated murderers to be freed because they were “victims of society”; and for helpless and sympathetic people to be scorned and despised.
They had no soul or ethics and cared about nothing.
Best of all was politics. By all appearances, the editorial page was a bitter fight between the rest of the editorialists who always supported the status quo and the power structure, and the “sob sister” who would support the loser, the more worthless, the better.
As far as this article goes, it is obvious to tell that this writer wants the “sob sister” role. In particular because he follows up in a sneering manner to everyone who disagrees with him.
He isn’t trying to change minds, but to incite outrage. And I wouldn’t be surprised if he wrote some of the follow up messages that attacked him the most.
Too bad this wonderful “point of view” did not translate into action by getting this Congresswoman some police protection.
If things are so bad in his town, why did he not give her security?
I know why.
Because he is lying...he is lying after the fact to punish his political enemies. He is exploiting these murders for his own gain.
Liberals are ghouls.
You malign rocks. They at least have a sense of what they are and they never say stupid things.
But if private citizen Sarah Palin offers her own point of view and stands by it, then she must surely be condemned.
Sounds like today’s average reporter to me.
Therefore, one must conclude that Dupnik has raised the danger level far beyond what it was.
The law of unintended consequences.....or were they unintended?
Neither did Stalin, Hitler, Charles Whitman, Jared Loughner or OJ Simpson.
Not backing off when you are wrong does not deserve adulation and awards.
A few days after the shooting, the publisher of the local, lib rag in my area, The La Crosse (Wis) Tribune, took the opportunity to write an editorial and blame everything on conservatives. It appears the common people have a lot more sense than bigshot editors and publishers. Liberal editors and publishers with tunnel vision.
Sheesh! Read the comments at the link. Owens responds to any comment he disagrees with.
I’m betting he doesn’t run, preferring to retire and spend more time with his family.
Joesph P. Owens celebrates being 100% wrong, on national airwaves, and refusing to change your mind in the face of mounds of evidence.
No wonder journOlism is dead.
Dupe-nik’s ‘point’ is on top of his head.
Sheriff Clarence Dupnik offered his bare-knuckles assessment of public dialogue
I find the reference to violence in this statement to be offensive and this kind of thing only encourages unstable individuals to commit violence.
“stood by it” and “stayed true”?
Are those the definitions of CYA these days or just when tards do it?
Yes, he was frank and straight forward (with his point of view) but he is against others that have different points of view.
I like a great teacher of about 200 years ago said after the question was asked: “What is wrong with the world?”
He sent back a one word answer: “ME”
We all need to examine ourselves. Have we not all came to know: “To him that knoweth to do good, and does it not to him it is sin.” James 3:17)
“Clarence Dupnik Offered his Point of View and Stood by It”.
So do Flat Earthers, 9/11 Truthers, Grassy Knollers and a host of others.
Doesn’t make them right. And unlike Dipstick, they’re not the head of a law enforcement agency with County wide jurisdiction, and possible responsibility for investigating the crime. Dipstick ought to change his name to Vischinsky. First the verdict and sentence, then the facts [as fabricated].
This is a case of prosecuting the charge because it is so serious even though it is known the crime was not committed.
He means well even though he is totally full of crap and known to be lying through his teeth. Meaning well trumps truth
Refreshing is not what I’d call the idiot sheriff from Pima County...
But who asked him?
To any & all of you who live within the jurisdiction of PIMA County & this ‘Sheriff”....Please get yourself some training, obtain a gun, & learn to take care of yourself.
The man you keep electing & keep paying isn’t doing that job for you.
Why hadn’t he put the kid into a 72 hour evaluation——long before the Meet & Greet. ???
