From School Lunches, to School Breakfasts, to ‘Child Dinners’ with taxpayers grabbing the check
Somewhat Reasonable (The Heartland Institute) ^ | January 18, 2011 | Jim Lakely

And, no, the term “child dinner” does not mean that moppets are on the menu. They are handed one, though, courtesy of the U.S. Department of Education. Via Julie Gunlock at NRO’s The Corner blog, we learn that the Obama administration is expanding its child-dinner program from 13 states to all 50 (or, if Obama gets his way, all 57 … or is it 58?).

Anyway, Gunlock has the details:

... This bit of government expansion, by the way, is courtesy of the lame-duck session of Congress.

... And what’s next for the (nearly literal) nanny state after this? AmeriCorps “volunteers” dispatched to change diapers? Uncle Sam picking up Brianna and Jacob from soccer practice? Obama reading the nation’s children bedtime stories? (Oh no … I don’t want to give this administration any ideas.)

Ironically, all of this “free” food is pretty much the same quality as the crappy fast food Obama’s wife keeps going on about.

Good point, QLA. It’s also on top of all the federal and state programs that are supposed to feed “needy” children at home.

“What’s next” he asks. Easy...if the government declares you to be a child for healthcare up age 26, then they should feed you three squares a day through age 27. That isn’t too much to ask of our government, is it?

Don’t forget taxpayer-subsidized college education. How will AmeriCorps survive without a continual feed of new “liberal” arts and social worker majors?

The kids get breakfast, lunch, and dinner at school and yet the parents still get food stamps and other welfare. Sometimes,in the morning, I sit on the edge of the bed and wonder why in hell do I keep going to work every day.

When the money runs out the Section-8/Welfare class will go berserk.

The term "class warfare" will no longer be a metaphor.

MCF: The answer to your question is “to support the welfare state.” You’re becoming a European ... and don’t even need a passport.

Speaking of lunch, the choice bits:

“Concannon revealed a much more ambitious agenda, saying “our goal is to provide a systematic and a reliable way for children across the country to get adequate nutrition 365 days a year.”

That really sums it up. The Obama administration seeks to feed this nation’s children all year round — not just when school is in session.”

“When is Obama, as he promised in the campaign, going to go through the federal budget line by line and cut wasteful spending? On his last day in office after a second term when he’s instituted or expanded 5,000 new federal programs?”

I’ve got a good idea, let give the children three extra meals a day, load them down with hours of homework and then whine about childhood obesity.

Between the ‘free’ meals at school, food stamps and food cupboards, no wonder we have so many overweight people pleading poverty. Having kids in high school, we also see how much additional stuff comes their way compliments of the taxpayers. Whenever our kids come home needing checks for this or that, new gym suits, spirit day t-shirts, etc., we know that some families get it all at taxpayer expense. It hasn’t been lost on our kids that these ‘poor’ kids often dress very well and have all the latest in personal technology.

Hey, why don't we buy them clothes, put a roof over their heads, and drive them to soccer practice too. Oh, wait, we do all that too via food stamps, government housing, cash for clunkers...

I effin' hate the nanny state. I want my life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness back, without a dozen freeloaders and illegal aliens riding on my back.

Thanks for picking out those choice bits, Bhoy. And that is the point.

When the left aims for a "cradle to the grave" welfare state, they ain't messin' around.

I will never forget some of my experiences doing pediatric home health with those "less fortunate" people. Not only were they on welfare, medicaid and going to college on gov't grants...their housing was subsidized and their rooms were stuffed to over-flowing with staples they garnered from local food pantries.

Believe me... they know how to "work the system"... and they sure don't need any more of my hard-earned dollars to feed their kids.

And when the price of energy rises, the kids will stay at school overnight.

Then, they’ll go to school shortly after birth, since child care is so expensive...

What makes you think the money will run out?
My Great-Grandchildren are already in debt for it.

I hope to get even with the whole lot and have both my girls become nuns.

Congress should not fund this nonsense just like healthcare.

Recently I had occasion to conduct a classroom observation of a student in a second grade classroom at one of the public schools I work at. During my observation the students were provided free breakfast. I noticed that somewhere between 70 to 80 percent of the “food” provided to these 30 students (approximately) was thrown in the trash uneaten or only partially eaten. Now, I don’t know where the funding comes from to provide the free breakfast, but I’m appalled at the waste.
