U.S. News & World Report ^ | 01/20/2011 | Paul Bedard

Moving aggressively to make good on election promises to slash the federal budget, the House GOP today unveiled an eye-popping plan to eliminate $2.5 trillion in spending over the next 10 years. Gone would be Amtrak subsidies, fat checks to the Legal Services Corporation and National Endowment for the Arts, and some $900 million to run President Obama's healthcare reform program.

Sounds like a lot of GOP R. Or BS.

I’ll believe it when I see it.

keep defense, State, National centers for Disease control (NIH), MOve the national parks into the defense department.

cut everything else.

sell all the federal lands that are not national parks or defense facilities. (The feds own lots and lots of land out west)

My list is similar, but...

Dept. of Energy-we still need it’s nuclear research. Everything else does more harm than good.

NPR- 0.00 dollars.

EPA Dept - We still need them, but on their original mission and funded at (inflation adjusted) 1980 levels. From that point, reduce their funding dollar for dollar for any new regulatory cost to business and consumers.

I don’t understand why the GOP is not going for cutting back to Clinton era spending levels. It would be fun to listen to the Democrats argue about that since they like to argue that those were the best of times, before Bush screwed everything up!

Actually, the reason your dishwasher doesn’t clean anymore is because phosphates have been removed from almost every dishwashing detergent. Check the box - would almost bet it says that on the box so you can feel good about yourself. Some environmental hooey. BTW, I think “Finish” is one of the last dishwashing detergents to have phosphates still in it. Stock up.

Very interesting. For sure the repeal of the Davis-Bacon Act should have happened years ago.

The dry cycle on our new GE dishwasher seems to last several hours — at least some blower is running that long. When I complained to GE, they said the new energy regs made them cut their heater element power by half so they (guess what?) run the heaters twice as long!

Yes, kill all of EPA and Energy Star.

Incidentally, when my wife & I discovered the NO PHOSPHATES change, we did some research and discovered that hospitals, restaurants & certain others are exempt and can still buy and use detergents with phosphates. So go to their suppliers & buy in bulk...we have been.

"Federal Workforce Reforms: Eliminate automatic pay increases for civilian federal workers for five years. Additionally, cut the civilian workforce by a total of 15 percent through attrition. Allow the hiring of only one new worker for every two workers who leave federal employment until the reduction target has been met. (Savings included in above discretionary savings figure)."

"But what exactly does a product need to prove to earn the coveted Energy Star label? That very question was put to the test last June by Congressional auditors posing as four separate companies submitting products to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Energy Department, which jointly run the Energy Star program. The results were enlightening.

For instance, a gasoline-powered alarm clock sailed through the program without objection after purposely fraudulent documents were submitted saying it was 20-percent more efficient than competing models. How'd that happen? Apparently, there is an automated system in place that granted an auto-approval to the gas-swilling wake-up machine."

"A small start. Not nearly enough."

Actually, this is huge. Look at the sacred cows they are going after. By starting slow they are putting a lot of pressure on the dems to go along because the next election cycle will be gearing up in a few short months.

$1.4 trillion deficit this year.

This ‘cut’ isn’t even coming close to what is needed.
