Rep. Steve Cohen apologizes for Nazi comments

By: Jennifer Epstein January 20, 2011 02:00 PM EST

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) is insisting that he didn’t mean to call his Republican colleagues Nazis for their opposition to the health care reform law, but nonetheless is apologizing to anyone offended by what he said on the House floor earlier this week.

In a statement released midday Thursday, Cohen said he wants “to be clear that I never called Republicans Nazis.” Rather, he said, he referred to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels in a Tuesday night floor speech because he considers Republicans to be peddling “propaganda” in their opposition to health care reform.

“The reference I made was to the greatest propaganda master of all time,” he said. “Propaganda, which is called ‘messaging’ today, can be true or false. In this case, the message is false.”

In his floor speech, Cohen said:“They say it’s a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels. You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That’s the same kind of thing.”

He continued to say that “Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it — believed it and you have the Holocaust. We heard on this floor, government takeover of health care” and people have come to believe that too.

Cohen, who is Tennessee’s first Jewish congressman, also used the statement to apologize to fellow Jews.

“I would certainly never do anything to diminish the horror of the Nazi Holocaust as I revere and respect the history of my people,” he said.

He did not apologize. He merely regrets that people didn’t like what he said.

That’s an apology? Only Politico would think so. He’s digging himself in deeper.

Oh, don't you just love those non-apology apologies? He is not sorry for what he said and still means it, he is sorry if that offends you. Or, in other words, "sorry but tough crap". I stand by my remarks. Dipsh*t.

Um, maybe I just have no reading comprehension whatsoever, and I didn't go to the link, but I see nowhere in the article where he ever apologizes (as specifically included in the title) to the Republicans for anything. This just seems to be a re-hash of where Cohen IMHO, doubled-down on his original comments and AGAIN likened the Repubs to Nazis.

And then the left-wing Politico makes up a headline to cover for what they know is egregious behaviour.

This kind of oh-so-coy game - the non-apologetic ("sorry if you were offended") "apology" - is what many Americans are sick of in Washington politics. Steve Cohen, this ridiculous excuse for a congressional Representative made inane, inflammatory remarks on the floor of the House of Representatives, likening perfectly cogent Republican objections to 'ObamaCare' as 'Nazi-like tactics' and when he's called on them, he offers a weasel-worded 'apology'. The man is a jerk and his constituents should be ashamed of having Cohen as their 'representative'.

What a prime example of the non-apology apology! “I’m really sorry morons out there took offense to my brilliant and incisive political remarks. I really didn’t say what I said. Everyone misunderstood what I said and I’m sorry about that.

Here’s how a decent person would respond: What I said was wrong on many levels and I’m sorry for my offensive comments. I make no excuse and blame no one but myself for what I said and I ask forgiveness from everyone I offended with my words.

But that would be a decent person.

Having lived in Memphis 40 years, he was on a radio program in the early 90’s when he was defending his stand against prayer in the public schools. He was a state rep. then as I remember.

Steve Cohen was the only one that voted against prayer in schools.

I called, but was immediately cut off when they understood my stand for prayer in the public schools.

Cohen is only for himself and not for the citizens, he should be out of there? He loves to grandstand, and we no longer need those kind of people in the Senate nor the House?

Cohen would have been among the first to sign up to be a voluntary zonderkommando in the nearest Nazi death camp ~ particularly if it had a big oven where he could hear the bodies crackle and pop.

A man like that is incapable of paying a sincere apology to anybody about anything.

This is confusing. I’ve seen one story that says that Cohen now says he didn’t say what he said, another that said he stands by what he said, and now one that says he apologized for what he said.

And I’m pretty sure all three stories were referring to the same statement he issued about what he said.

For some reason, I’m reminded of Michael Moore being outraged that someone was putting on a Leni Riefenstahl film festival. I figured what really bugged him was the thought that people might notice the similarities between his and Riefenstahl’s works.

Doubt this would be considered a good or even marginal case of back spinning. This Spin was just pathetic and he should be made to pay for this in his future reelection bid.
