House majority leader says Ryan, not Bachmann speaks for the GOP
CNN ^

Washington (CNN) – There may be two House Republicans giving high-profile responses to President Obama's State of the Union speech on Tuesday night, but House Majority Leader Eric Cantor made it clear that it's the new House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, not Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann, who is speaking for the GOP.

"Paul Ryan is giving the official response," Cantor said when asked at his weekly session with reporters if Bachmann's response will step on the GOP message.

After House Speaker John Boehner and Senator GOP Leader Mitch McConnell announced on Friday that Ryan would deliver the GOP response, the Tea Party Express put out word that Rep. Bachmann would also be commenting on the President's speech and they would broadcast her remarks on their website. On Monday, her office welcomed network television coverage of her speech, which will be delivered from the Capitol Hill Club, just steps away from the U.S. Capitol campus.

Lumping Rep. Bachmann in with the rest of the entire membership of Congress, Cantor said, "You know Michelle Bachmann, just like the other 534 members of the House and Senate, are going to have opinions as to the State of the Union." The House Majority Leader added, "This is a process that happens every year and I look forward to all comments," and noted again that Ryan's was the official Republican response to the president.

Pressed by CNN that unlike most other members of Congress, Bachmann's remarks were expected to receive similar televised coverage as Ryan's official response, Cantor laughed, and asked, "Then maybe I should ask why is that the case?"

OK... I will retract my lapdog comment until he gives his rebuttal... but if he represents what republican elites want represented... then I will spread the truth about him as I do romney and newt and other liberal miscreants. We shall see.

You should be cautioning cantor on his divisive responses and not those of us on FR who are offering our opinion on the matter.

They asked Chris Christie to give the reply. He declined.

No great loss.....Christie has been good on trying to reduce spending....but he is weak on gun rights and national security issues (supported building the 9/11 mosque).

My problem is not so much with Ryan, but Cantor’s indirect attack on Bachmann.

If cnn is guilty, then cantor is equally guilty... with his divisive and offensive remarks... and enough of us on this thread alone felt compelled to post on them... and that points to these remarks being both divisive and offensive.

Keep in mind folks, a leader is a person who is brave enough to take a stand and bold enough to get people to follow.

Cantor is a weak puke who hasn’t the courage to take a stand, let alone get anyone to follow him. He can’t even stand up to metrosexual David Gregory. I can’t see how Cantor can look at himself in a mirror without being embarrassed.

We don’t need his type, we need warriors.

Cantor should be the next one to get voted out by the Tea Party. Rush needs to start instructing his listeners and Tea Party names of Congressmen/women, that need to be weeded out......I hope the Tea Party plays as much or more of a presence in the next election working hand in hand with talk radio, etc.

An entirely different question: who speaks for the American people?

Like the process of sitting with the libs? Like selling out the people who put you in office? Traitor!

Do you see the problem? Cantor and his ilk are the problem. Most of us appreciate Bachmann and Ryan. Why is Cantor not pushing that with the GOP you get a twofer.

I’ll tell you why. Guys like Cantor, a whiny sissy boy that lacks guts.

He may think he scored with the MSM. He didn’t and he deserves any ridicule he gets from either side of the aisle.

Rep. Michele Bachmann will address the nation AFTER Rep. Ryan is finished.

The fact that the term “warrior” comes to your mind when you look at Cantor makes me question your judgment :-)

“Bachmann speaks for me.”

Ditto here. Ryan’s OK but I’d rather hear from Michelle. Cantor is getting on my nerves bigtime. I think Laura Ingrahm had him pegged a month or so ago when she put Cantor on the grill and turned up the heat when she was subbing for O’Reilly. I don’t trust Cantor as far as I can thrown him.

There is nothing “normal” about a major newscaster broadcasting a speech from a caucus leader instead of the opposition party’s leader."

...it's the Tea Party Express' (Inc.) website, not a major broadcaster. It's muchado about nothing if you ask me.

Cantor is trying to divide the GOP? Why should Bachmann respect him doing that?

Absolutely. In addition to being of sound knowledge and values, bet he presents better and would have more appeal as a national candidate than either Bachman or Palin.

So long as come 2012, there is no splintering of the Republican party which gives Obama a free pass for another term. The closer it comes, the more real a scenario that seems which concerns me.
