I would like to say that I believe in a strong national defense. We cannot have one without the troops being able to train somewhere. Makua, Pohakuloa, NIMBY. [ snip ] Surely there is a compromise here. Limit night flights to earlier hours, when people may still be awake. Share the wealth and use Maui's runway half the time, if they don't already.
I did not think when I got discharged I would ever again feel like I was living 300 yards from the flight line at DaNang. Some nights I wonder.

Gosh Greg, how long did you live there before they built the runway?
Keyhole? Thats KH-11 isn’t it?
This happens everywhere. What gets me is when people build homes under an existing landing pattern and then complain about the noise. I love how people complain about noise at Nellis, that has been there forever and none of the homes there are more than 10 years old.
Wars are not fought only in the daytime. Miller should take a look and the present and possible implications of China’s rise and decide whether he wants to move to better climes or STFU!
I was in bed upslope mauka and it was kind of eerie hearing it in the middle of the night. Plus, it was eerie having the Big Creep visit the island.
That being said, I would probably get used to the sound if I still lived in that place...as long as it wasn't happening constantly.
Too freaking bad! I live right under a navy touch-go route and have for decades. I knew they flew overhead when we moved here and by golly they have to fly somewhere.
I hate NIMBYs.
KOA is a tiny airport btw. Quit yer bitchen!
In the ‘70s I had a friend who was the environmental engineer for LAX. He lived in an apartment that was between the runways. It was very quiet.
I used to live a mile from Mather AFB. They had alerts all the time when several B52s would thunder into the sky, it was awesome. We used to sit on the end of the runway outside the base and drink beer and watch the show.
As a dependent, I could drive right up to the flight line.
The Thunderbirds as well as the Blue Angels were awesome as well. I think we went to every open house from 68 to 79.
Too bad they closed it but they still use the incredibly long runway.
I remember well when a Castle AFB B52 crashed right outside the base. I seem to remember they said they forgot to fill the water tanks that allowed the engines to produce enough thrust for takeoff. I believe four crew member’s lost their lives that day. I saw it from a lookout over Natomas lake. As soon as I saw the black cloud I drove over to where the plane had crashed. Just terrible.
Interestingly enough, I was at Travis AFB in 1993? when a C141 burned on the ramp. I was at the hospital and asked if the alarm was a training exercise and the, I think, Staff SGT. took me to a window that looked over the ramp and there was a plane burning.

The sound of freedom! I sure miss it.
