If this is true, I would hope that there would be free and fair elections in Egypt and that the UN and the US would ensure that those kind of elections take place without violence or interference.

You would hope, but you would be dreaming. The organized religious-oriented groups, such as the Muslim Brotherhood, or Iranian operatives, would wind up running the place if Mubarak just ups and leaves. A military man might try to take control; but if a religious government is put in place, the military will get purged.

I'm very pessimistic... this has started as an economically driven call for democracy, but I'm afraid the only real unifying force in the Middle East is conservative Islam. Boy, do I ever hope I'm wrong; I'd much prefer that they elect a peaceful government and go back to watching soccer.
