No surprise: Gardasil as good against HPV in men as in women
Los Angeles Times ^ | 2/2/2011 | Thomas H. Maugh II

To no one's surprise, a new clinical trial demonstrates that the human papilloma virus vaccine Gardasil is as good at protecting men as it is in protecting women, researchers reported Wednesday. A clinical trial in more than 4,000 boys and men demonstrated that the vaccine was more than 90% successful in preventing genital lesions caused by the four strains of HPV that the vaccine is active against, about the same level of protection demonstrated for women.

The vaccine is currently approved in the United States for both males and females over the age of 9, but current recommendations call for administration only to females. But the vaccine has been highly controversial, both because some view it as an implicit approval of sexual activity and because of its cost -- nearly $400 for a complete regimen of three doses. An estimated three-quarters of girls don't even start the regimen, and only about a third of those who do start it actually finish.

Again from your link:

All serious reports (8%) for Gardasil have been carefully analyzed by medical experts. Experts have not found a common medical pattern to the reports of serious adverse events reported for Gardasil that would suggest that they were caused by the vaccine.

Bolding is mine.

Is there an actual test for men for HPV?

There is no reliable test for HPV in men.

Ok, I believe I said the following.

Are you sexually active, or planning to become sexually active soon? Then you should get the HPV vaccine.

Are you not sexually active? Then don’t get the HPV vaccine.

And “I’m” the naive one? I’ve argued in favour of getting tested before getting married, and before having sex. Why? Because people lie.

You chose to accept the risks, with your wife. I’m sorry that it didn’t work out for you. I’m not sure why you are attacking me for what your wife did to you, but that’s your business.

HPV is for the most part asymptomatic in men.

“All serious reports (8%) for Gardasil have been carefully analyzed by medical experts. Experts have not found a common medical pattern to the reports of serious adverse events reported for Gardasil that would suggest that they were caused by the vaccine.”

I’ve ran the analysis, and there *is* a clustering of symptoms.

I should also mention that Merck isn’t paying me a dime. How bout you?

You know, it’s funny. First I say that people have died from the Gardasil Vaccine, which you deny is the case. Now you are accepting that 58 people have died from the use of Gardasil, you are no longer attacking the source.

Funny that, eh? Look, Gardasil is an untested vaccine, and young girls are the lab rats. Pray those who have already come down with symptoms do not suffer long term damage.

First of all, whenever I comment on Gardasil on a thread on FR someone comes along accusing me of being a Merck stooge. For the record, I have never received a nickel from Merck. In fact, as a cytopathologist I can potentially see my livelihood threatened by widespread Gardasil adoption- i.e. less need for Pap smears, a major part of my livelihood. But even if I was the CEO of Merck it wouldn't change the facts of Gardasil's efficacy.

People get vaccinated and people die. Coincidence does not prove causality. There is no evidence linking the deaths or other injuries to Gardasil. Gardasil is very well studied. The various clinical trials have collectively involved tens of thousands of subjects over several years. None of these have shown any difference in death or serious outcomes between Gardasil recipients and controls. Sure, there have been a few deaths in each group but no greater than that expected actuarially in people that age.

We just need to make our own organization that is anti-Planned Parenthood, because honestly they give out so many lies about “safe sex”, or the self-fulfilling prophecy that children are inherently promiscuous. Pretty ugly, and also pretty disgusting, and they’ve got to go

More evidence for the utility of HPV vaccination.

My children will certainly NOT receive this vaccination, either voluntarily or under order by an "authority."

You might consider reading up on the safety and effectiveness of this poison. Even one of the major research scientists who developed this vaccine, Dr. Diane Harper, has stated that the vaccine is ineffective and that she has concerns over its safety.

This issue has been previously discussed on FR.

Harper’s opinion goes against the overwhelming weight of evidence.

And condoms are unreliable in preventing HPV.

That’s the point that should be the most important. As much as anyone would like to say otherwise, promiscuous sex is never “safe”.

Additionally, microbiology simply shows that most measures to neutralize or kill viruses chemically, such as 75% ethanol, have little to no effect on HPV.

Ok, thanks.

I think we can dispense with the accusations that I’m with the anti-vaccination folks. And you aren’t with Merck.

I can see why you would support Gardasil. The problem is that the HPV vaccine doesn’t target all of the strains of HPV, in that people can and will get infected with HPV despite the vaccination.

Every single vaccination that has been required has had a high effectiveness against the disease targetted. DPT, MMR, they will protect a certain ratio of the people who would otherwise contract the disease.

Due to the fact that Gardasil only treats certain strains, it doesn’t reach the same threshold as DPT and MMR. That combined with the fact that it’s not a communicable disease, are both reasons why it shouldn’t be a required vaccine.

That being said, if people wish to get the vaccination, that should be their option. Like the flu shots, there is a certain segment of the population that will benefit, sexually active folks. Beyond that the Gardasil vaccine is not beneficial, and ought not to be required.

What kind of medical research do you do?

Depends on what people request.

In this case, they asked me to compile all the VEARS data wrt Gardasil, so that they could track ongoing trends.

In the past I’ve done reports on sex selection abortions in Vancouver and Toronto and also in the United Kingdom. I’ve also done reports on payments by Medicare towards abortion and abortion funding over the past 10 years.

It’s pretty much all database work, sifting through records, finding things. I guess you could call it freelance reporting, but I do the grunt work and the research myself.

You want to pollute your children’s bodies.. feel free. My Niece has been a physical wreck since taking this stupid vaccine that her liberal mother forced on her. You know nothing about me but go ahead and assume away.

You are still assuming. My kid has had all of his shots but he’s not getting gardasil nor do we do flu shots. The Health Ranger has new research just published this week regarding vaccines which I find interesting as well.
Seems to me you are the one with the closed mind and all of the anger.

Great, I’m glad your only half-crazy.

Hope your kid doesn’t die of the flu, like 1000s do each year.

Trusting anyone, ever, is a risk. The risk of a spouse cheating is far higher than the risk of a side effect of a vaccine. We can talk about just how many orders of magnitude bigger the risk is if you want. Logic says take the smaller risk.

Ok, I believe I said the following. Are you sexually active, or planning to become sexually active soon? Then you should get the HPV vaccine.

Actually, you said this:

The only time Gardasil is at all useful, is if someone chooses to have sex with someone else who is already infected.

Which is ridiculous. 1) Most people infected with HPV have no idea that they are infected. 2) There's no guarantee that they won't go and have sex with someone else after you're in a relationship with them.
