I supposed I might miss “Wait! Wait! Don't Tell Me!” or “Prairie Home Comrade.”
But not much...
“We live way out here in the Alaska Bush, and the only radio station we get is the local NPR affiliate.”
Sirius?
Actually, I think this is a smashing idea, to have check boxes on the 1040 form. And not just for NPR and CPB. Liberals should be able to pay lots and lots of money, in *addition* to their taxes, to programs that taxpayers no longer have to fund.
Give $100 to the Department of Education. Great idea. How about $1,000 to Housing and Urban Development? $10,000 to the EPA. $10,000 more to this, that and the other.
Let them put their money where their mouth is.
>>>Sirius?<<<
Out of range and unavailable. Like I said, the only radio station we get - at least over the air - is our one NPR station. It’s hard sometimes for folks in the Lower 48 to get their heads around just how remote we are up here.
We DO have radio over the Internet, most of the time, although there are times when that is broken up due to lack of bandwidth.
At night we can sometimes get skip from stations in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Japan. Not the best local radio, though.
Yep, if the local station goes, it’s basically silence for us. Just stuff that happens when you live 300 miles from the end of the road.
Does it also cut off any indirect source of funding, such as the assistance to foundations that in turn give money to the same source?
It will do no good if that indirect source of funding is not stifled as well, if there is that kind of funding.
BROADCASTING is not a proper function of the Federal government.
Your icy, far-flung state wants a state-funded radio station? Go for it. Just don't ask me for money for it, because I don't live there.
If we don't soon start pushing back with "(blank) is not a proper and Constitutional function of the Federal government," we are going to LOSE the fight to rescue America.
And it would only cost every American $.01 a day to give me $1.1 billion this year. Let's do it.
Oh Fuzzah! I didn’t know about this one
“This group is claiming that it only cost $1.35 per year, per American to fund it but they fail to mention, its not their $1.35 to spend.”
For only $1.35 per household per year, we can turn every abortion clinic into a life clinic.
Wonder if they will be happy to involuntarily contribute to that.
In this rural area NPR programing generally sucks. If you have Internet access you are better off to listen to Internet radio or better still Pandora. If there is so much demand for this kind of programing there should be willing private sponsors.
it will truly be a sad day if it goes away, but... i will understand it
Tell NPR to get their money from Arianna...after the AOL deal she’s loaded. Let leftists pay for leftist propaganda.
Sell it to the Err-America folks for $1.00. It would still be a bargain for the taxPAYers.
Shiller: Lets go on a sidebar. Theres a misperception about federal funding and public radio. Theres the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. They receive $90 million a year and a vast majority goes to member public radio stations. Those stations pull in more than $1 billion collectively a year. Its significant and important but not even close to the lions share of revenues for public radio. NPR gets no allocation from CPB. Zero. We are a private 501(c)3. Weve had journalists call up and ask what department of the government we report to. Thats laughable. Have you listened to our shows? We do apply for competitive grants from the likes of the Ford Foundation and the Knight Foundation. As a result, some money from CPB does come to us when we win grants. Depending on the year, it represents just one to three percent of our total budget.
The elimination of federal funding would be a significant blow to nearly 900 public radio stations that serve the needs of more than 38 million Americans with free over-the-air programming they can't find anywhere else. It would diminish stations' ability to bring high-quality local, national and international news to their communities, as well as local arts, music and cultural programming that other media don't present. Rural and economically distressed communities could lose access to this programming altogether if their stations go dark.
Yes, Yes, Yes! No more of that monotone zombie who hosts A Prairie Home Companion.>>>>>>>>>>
Garrison Feelher is such a profoundly freedom challenged liberal idiot. His little fun shots at Bush years ago made me call and complain to NPR.It made no difference, but I shut them off. I do ot allow NPR to be played in my home or in my car.I listen to the local C& W stations that put Rush on in the afternoons.
joan kroc....something ray...her husband. who actually made the money would never have done
