Thousands rally at Wisconsin Capitol to protest anti-union bill Teachers, prison guards and students denounce Gov. Scott Walker's proposal to all but eliminate the bargaining process for most public employees. The measure is moving swiftly through the GOP-led Legislature.

Associated Press February 16, 2011, 6:03 p.m.

MADISON, Wis. — Thousands of teachers, prison guards and students descended on the Wisconsin Capitol on Wednesday to try to preserve the union rights of public employees in the state that was the first to grant collective bargaining to government workers more than half a century ago.

The new Republican governor, Scott Walker, is seeking passage of the nation's most aggressive anti-union proposal — a plan that would all but eliminate the bargaining process for most public employees.

The sweeping measure was moving swiftly through the GOP-led Legislature and would mark a dramatic shift for Wisconsin, which passed a comprehensive collective bargaining law in 1959 and was the birthplace of the national union representing non-federal public employees.

The statehouse filled with as many as 10,000 demonstrators, and many Madison teachers joined the protest, calling in sick in such numbers that the district had to cancel classes.

Walker said he had the votes to pass the measure, which he said was needed to help balance a projected $3.6-billion budget shortfall and avoid widespread layoffs. The Legislature could begin voting on it as early as Thursday

“and students”

Yeah, like they know so much about life, work, paying taxes, etc. Maybe once they get done doing the “Jump Around” they’ll grow up.

Gov Walker should demand that every "sick" teacher produce evidence from a physician of their illness. Let's see how dedicated these protestors are when their salaries gets docked.

They interviewed them on the street, the students said they didn’t know why they were there.

“Our teacher drove us here” “I don’t know that we are protesting, I thought this is a field trip”

Absolutely sick...fire them

Wow, if I was the parent of one of those kids, I would definitely have a little *talk* with that teacher.

Governor Walker, don’t flinch. The Republicans need to pass this now. You don’t hear them talk about Wisconsin is also the State the Republican Party was founded in the early 1850’s!!

He does not seem like the one to flinch. If Jerry Brown did something like this, I will consider re-purchasing a home in California.

Just in case some of you would like to drop a few lines of encouragement to Gov. Walker, his e-mail address is

govgeneral@wisconsin.gov

In the liberal political populace of increasing mediocrity and cowardice, his voice is one of uncommon courage, one that I hope becomes the norm for a conservative ascendancy.

This will be a huge victory for Wisconsin taxpayers if the unions are ended. Once they balance their budget, they’ll be able to go forward without racking up huge debts in the future.

It will also neuter the dem’s power base in that state.
