Moderate Wisconsin Republicans Offer Compromise

With Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker maintaining a hard line on his budget bill and Democratic senators refusing to return to Madison to vote, attention is turning to a group of moderate Republican senators to negotiate a compromise to the stalemate that has drawn thousands of protesters to the state capital for a sixth straight day.

The proposal, written by Sen. Dale Schultz and first floated in the Republican caucus early last week, calls for most collective bargaining rights of public employee unions to be eliminated – per Mr. Walker's bill – but then reinstated in 2013, said Mr. Schultzs's chief of staff Todd Allbaugh.

"Dale is committed to find a way to preserve collective bargaining in the future," said Mr. Allbaugh in a telephone interview.

On Sunday Mr. Walker reiterated his confidence that Republicans would pass their proposal intact.

"We're willing to take this as long as it takes because in the end we're doing the right thing for Wisconsin," Mr. Walker said during an interview with Fox News on Sunday.

Mr. Schultz was first elected to the state senate in 1991 and was the Republican majority leader in 2005 and 2006. He earned a reputation for working across party lines and was endorsed in his 2010 re-election bid by the state's largest teacher's employee. He won with nearly 65 percent of the vote.

This giant (what, 500+ pounds?) teacher's employee sure has a lot of clout.

This has got to be a joke, right? This is like having a deadline of the Bush tax cuts and then Congress extending the deadline two years.

It would be interesting to see people holding 70MPH signs tomorrow when they go back in session. I wonder what the reaction would be.

My sentiments exactly. Crumbling and waffling is like suicide.

Why do they even need to do something like this? If the rats take over in 2013, they can change the law themselves.

This just sets up another monster political firestorm during the 2012 elections.

It’s counterproductive and will hurt the GOP. It’s bad politics.

Absolutely wrong headed and weak.

Increase the Union share of costs by 1% per day until the Dem congress critters report for work.

At day 4 - remove all collective bargaining including salary.

At day 7 - find a judge who can read - declare it an illegal strike - and fire them all. The kids wil lbe better off with whomever replaces these socialists - a few months off might do them some good.

Walker has the unions and Democrats on the ropes doing what the Wisconsin voters elected him to do and here we have - again - a bunch of Republican candy asses wanting to moderate.
Why? If you put off the solution to their budget problems, it only gets harder the next time.

Nashville has a Parthenon. He is more than welcome to get his ass kicked in Athens sister city.

He will get his A$$ kicked here in Tennessee.
And the next thing he will be looking for after he finds the Parthenon is a HOSPITAL!

OH SO TRUE... I get what you are saying ... and COULD NOT EXPRESS IT BETTER.... conflict to some is Always negative... no matter the exacting clarification conflict and confrontation brings to a debate...

Namby - Pamby people who somehow decide to become elected officials should just resign and go away ... Politics of the past 20 years and most especially of the last 10 years is NOT A PICNIC... and those wussies who got themselves elected to office and have NO TASTE for confrontation are CHEATING the American voter... just plain cheating us...

RINOs - Go to Hell...
