The shallowness has been the reason given for such devastation.

I was in Christchurch four years ago. Really sad to see the pictures of the Downtown Cathedral get trashed ! Christchurch was one of my favorite places in NZ !

This sounds very much like the Long Beach quake back in the 1950’s here in So Cal. Lots of buildings built of brick. The bricks fall and kill people.

Very sad. Lots of building code changes in LA since then.

I would think NZ would have a fair mount of quakes.

Prayers.

Good for you. Great with dates!

I have been looking at the photos. It looks bad but it does look like a problem with brick buildings. Brick buildings, as I’m sure you know, have to be reinforced here in LA.

The quake was right under the city and the city is built on sand, gravel and dirt with a water table below it. Liquification is a fact there. The shaking that the city felt would have been tremendous, more than just the Richter Scale would suggest. There are other scales which quantify the severity in terms of the shaking felt and damage done. Those scales will better reflect what Christchurch is experiencing.

I lived in Pomona and Glendale from 1974 to 1989, so I went through the 5.0 Whittier quake. I know about the required reinforcement of brick structures.

I lived in Simi Valley across from the Reagan Library from 1993 to 1997, so I went through the 6.7 Northridge quake.

I went through the 6.8 Nisqually quake up here in Seattle in 2001.

I've seen a whole lotta shakin' goin' on.

Our daughter has pointed out numerous buildings in San Luis Obispo going through new reinforcement processes and has described the detail of all the codes they have to satisfy (She’s a brand new architectural engineer just out of Cal Poly).

Sigh, I noticed that after I posted. If Cascadia lets loose, we are all equally screwed... Seriously, I pray I am west of the Willamette and south of the Columbia... because every bridge between Kalamath Falls and British Columbia will be impassible. Masonry buildings will be a MAJOR problem in Seattle and Portland. I REALLY don't want to be either place in a Cascadia event.

Not to mention tsunamis....Cannon Beach, Ocean Shores, etc.

I live in the South Sound area. I don’t want to be here if The Big One hits. And it’s not only the Cascadia Subduction Zone...

The Seattle Fault runs right beneath the city center. Geologists say the last time that sucker let go, the ground moved SIX FEET. That would rip Seattle apart.

TV 3 in New Zealand (via the Australian internet feed up-thread) reporting at least 17 confirmed dead so far, number expected to rise much higher. The Christchurch cathedral has partially collapsed. A four-story office building pancaked, 30+ still trapped inside. Two tour buses crushed by falling rubble in the central business district. This is a bad one, much worse than the September earthquake; even though it was “only” a 6.3 magnitude, they’re saying the epicenter was extremely shallow, only about 3 miles deep, which made it more violent at the surface.

Citizen X knows Puget Sound quakes:

1949 - 7.1 8 dead - As a kid I was outside playing and remember running like hell.

1965 - 6.5 7 dead - Just sat down at work and dove under desk.

2001 - 6.8 - Nisqually quake. I was 180 mi. away in Portland, OR at a red light and felt the swaying.

Glad I wasn't around for the January 1700 event on the WA coast estimated around 9.0+. Caused a tsumami that struck Japan's Honshu island.

Thank goodness. I happened to be in a 7.6 in the ME many decades ago. An official estimate placed the toll at 17,127 killed and 43,959 injured, but many sources suggest the actual figure may have been closer to 45,000 dead and a similar number injured. It was terrifying.

Speaking of shaking, the tremors and small quakes within the New Madrid system have really increased in number lately. Check the number of tremors beginning on February 16th:

I just learned that my congresscritter Rick Larsen is down there on “official business”.

While the earthquake is tragic. It needs to be pointed out that Rick Larsen will DO ANYTHING to avoid spending time with those of us who work and live in WA 2nd district.

Larsen would rather jump on a plane and fly 18 hours one-way to New Zealand in the hopes that he won’t have to defend his inexcusable support of bailouts, Pelosi and Obamacare.

Have you ever noticed that these costly congressional “trips” to the southern hemishphere always occur during our winter months?

I just checked the weather forecast for Wellington, NZ. tomorrow is sunny and about 70 degrees.

,,, long time no be in touch! Sorry for that. Well, don't believe any understatements on this quake... it's a horror story. Haiti was a tragedy but it's flashed across the TV in a blur and you think, "my God, what would happen if that hit us?" It has. What you especially need to know is NZL's sincere love and thanks for America being one of the first to step in with offers of help - which I'm sure we'll take you up on.

Go to http://www.stuff.co.nz for pictures and you'll get the feel of how things are on this [radio] site: http://www.radiolive.co.nz

Thanks for getting in touch Elliot.

,,, I'm fine. Thanks for asking. This one's an absolute disaster. Guess what? We first heard about it an hour or so after it happened from good friends in Iowa! We turned the radio on and sure enough... we dropped TV almost a month ago; we're sick to death of the BS.

We're in the lower North Island so we're OK. Christchurch had a 7,1 on September 4 last year but they reckon that was nothing compared to yesterday's 6,3.

hey everyone I am posting this from Christchurch.

You would not believe the damage here, whole central city destroyed (2nd time in 5 months) 75 dead, 3-400 missing, most without power and water (very blessed here)

This is just crazy. Check out stuff.co.nz if you want coverage.
