Where would we be without labor unions? We would be much better off.
Americans do not understand what "labor unions" mean. Nothing prevents a group of workers at a plant or office from getting together, signing an agreement which delegates power to negotiate contracts to certain representatives, and then proceeding with collective bargaining by those workers who chose to sign the agreement. That is not unionism; it is simply a business arrangement, much like when an athlete has an agent or a client has a lawyer.
The problem with unionism is that those who do not feel such an agreement is needed are compelled to surrender their right to bargain for their working conditions and compelled, as well, to support a vast, expensive bureaucracy of labor satraps. It is coercion of workers masked as industrial democracy. If 49% of the "represented" workers want a wage freeze but more vacation time, and that is not the official union position, then the union bosses are working against the interest of these workers. If many workers feel union rules reduce efficiency, and so the prospects of more jobs, those workers have to pay for the privilege of their representatives doing exactly the opposite of what these wish.
Coerced unions were always unnecessary, wasteful, and immoral -- and all unions today are coerced unions. Depending upon whether a state has a "closed shop" (only members of a union can be hired, and these must comply with union rules) or "union shop" (new employees must join the union after being hired), if a state has no right to work law, employers must negotiate with the union instead of the individual worker. Only 22 states now have right to work laws, although robust Republican state governments could add six more states to that column...

Yesterday I was setting a fire in my woodstove and came across a 2-page article from last summer in the NYTimes discussing the booming auto manufacturing in Alabama/Georgia - Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, Honda, Toyota.
Of course, the “journal of record” punted on 2nd down, never delving into the “Why?” - other than a single sentence mentioning that none of these booming places are unionized, yet the workers still make comparable wages to the unionized folks to the north.

The only trouble with that is that many of the new arrivals are died-in-the-wool liberals from blue states who hate high taxes and economic slowness and yet still thaink liberalism has nothing to do with it.

You paint with a brush that’s too broad. Everyone I know that left the socialist state of Michigan for the south is conservative.
The problem in the south, as I see it, is that the citizens here vote conservative in national elections, but vote democrat in local elections, because my daddy, grandaddy and great-grandaddy voted democrat.
It’s a major reality disconnect, although I’m starting to see these voters slowly wake up and realize that a local democrat is as slimey as a national democrat.

Yes, understood - I was pointing to a cause (better public policy - ie RTW - leads to superior opportunities), and you mention an unfortunate effect, those opportunities might attract losers from rust-bucket blue-states. This is a problem New Hampshire has, folks move in from Massachusetts to escape high taxes, and then inexplicably want to impose their leftist high-tax nonsense - basically like inviting someone over on a hot day, and they peee in your pool.
This is why red states should cut off as much government hand-outs as possible. Low taxes attract productive people to the state, and meanwhile reducing hand-outs will force rent-seekers to move out to dumb-ass blue states like NY and CA.

Nancy Pelosi was a rude awakening regarding the Myth of the Blue Dog - people finally realizing that a vote for a Democrat - even a conservative (what?) one - is still a vote for a far left agenda.

Regarding the “disconnect”, it seems to varies state by state. The process is a top-to-bottom inversion. First President, then Senate, then House, then down through the state legislatures, and...
For example, Arkansas has been very slow to turn over - much slower than, say, Alabama - but in 2010 a Senate seat flipped, and 2 House seats. Hoping Mike Ross (Blue Dog in AR04) can get punched out in 2012, and in 2014 Mark Pryor goes the way of Blanche Lincoln.

Take a quick glace at Broward and Palm Beach Counties in FL, their demographics and voting habits and see how broad you think the brush is.
What you are saying I found to be true when I lived in Georgia but the Yanks who move to FL are far more liberal Democrat. And OLD(meaning a lot depend a great deal on SocSec $ and Medicare).
Cobb and Cherokee Counties in GA had plenty of transplants who didn’t get the old locals riled up much at all because they liked what they moved to. I wish I could say the same thing about FL but I really can’t, unfortunately.

I learned my lesson about unions when I was working my way through college. They didn’t follow their own seniority rules and had me fired when I couldn’t afford to pay my dues because of the cutback in hours I received even though I was the senior worker. Unions are just another good-old-boy network. “I got mine, and I got my friends and family-members theirs, and you can kiss my behind.” Look at how many friends and family members “work” together in union shops.
