As labor battles erupt in state capitals around the nation, a majority of Americans say they oppose efforts to weaken the collective bargaining rights of public employee unions and are also against cutting the pay or benefits of public workers to reduce state budget deficits, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.
...But the nationwide poll found that embattled public employee unions have the support of most Americans and most independents as they fight the efforts of newly elected Republican governors in Wisconsin and Ohio to weaken their bargaining powers, and the attempts of governors from both parties to cut their pay or benefits.
Governors in both parties have been making the case that public workers are either overpaid or have overly generous health and pension benefits. But 61 percent of those polled including just over half of Republicans said they thought the salaries and benefits of most public employees were either about right or too low for the work they do.
Tax increases were not as unpopular among those surveyed as they are among many governors, who have vowed to avoid them. Asked how they would choose to reduce their states deficits, those polled preferred tax increases over benefit cuts for state workers by nearly two to one. Given a list of options to reduce the deficit, 40 percent said they would increase taxes, 22 percent chose decreasing the benefits of public employees, 20 percent said they would cut financing for roads and 3 percent said they would cut financing for education.

PPP polls are untrustworthy. As for this specific one, see Legal Insurretion blog for a breakdown on how crooked it is.
Massive oversampling of Democrats and union members in this poll. Details:

I don’t, for a second, believe this Union propaganda. No one I talk to backs these Mafia thugs and goons.
Don’t worry, the corrections will come next week. This is out of the template. They just fit in their cause and the poll works for them.
It looks like the this weeks Talking Points have been released: “GET US SOME GOOD POLLING TO HELP US OUT IN WISCONSIN. DO WHATEVER IT TAKES.”
New York Times/CBS...That says it all
“The nationwide telephone poll was conducted Feb. 24-27 with 984 adults and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points for all adults. Of those surveyed, 20 percent said there was a union member in their household, and 25 percent said there was a public employee in their household.”
Gee, ya thinkin’ what I’m thinkin’? BS ALERT!
If Walker doesn't cave, will he be called "statesmanlike," as are other elected leaders who govern "against the will of the people" ?
Yes, virtually everyone loves paying higher taxes.
What a bullsh** poll.
I’m totally anti-union
Because everyone knows that the public is begging to be raked over the coals.
The level of stupidity the MSM assigns to the general public is astoundingly insulting.
A New York Slimes/See-BS poll?
REALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why don;t they take a poll on wwhether or not Americans think Obama is the Second Coming of Christ. I KNOW what THAT poll would say!
How can ANYONE take these two propaganda machines seriously.
A public union employee in 25% of their households?? I imagine that is way above the national average.
Just wait until the people realize that all of their health care workers, including doctors and nurses are now “public employees”.
I think they are farrrrr too generous. They should assume:
That way, they can show the TRUE makeup of America.
Y'see.
Barbara Streisand!
It takes a real leap of faith, even by Democrats, to believe in any poll financed by CBS and the New York Times. Even Pew receives more trust, and that is saying something.
Well they must have a selective sample group for this poll - like union members only, First question: Are you a union member?
Hey, I look for the union label. I really do.
If I find it on something, that thing goes right back on the shelf. Don’t knowingly buy anything union made if I have the choice.
Sick of union thugs and marxism. SICK OF THEM!
It’s a little more than double as slightly less than 12% of the workforce are union members.
I just flat out don't believe it. This was skewed somehow by either biasing the questions, biasing the sample pool (most likely) or just outright fraud.
Walker's a Republican, therefore he's merely being stubborn and intransigient.
the Oligarchy is going to bombard We the People in Flyover Country with this cr&* from now until 2012....
Desperation.
do a news search at news.yahoo.com on the public unions. I would consider the readers of Yahoo News to be center if not LEFT OF CENTERm. Notice the majority of the postings and which of the postings are the most popular to give you an idea of the way people think about this issue in general:

The level of stupidity the MSM assigns to the general public is astoundingly insulting.
I guess we have to teach the BB heads in media, the administration and the democrats another lessen in 2012.
Suure... the New York Times is right... when they pay us a million dollars to prove it!
Will never happen.
Whatever it takes - let the heads roll. Anyway, we need to change Washington from shyster lawyers to savvy business with high morals and ethics. It will be hard but we're up to it!
...'Nuff said.
Agreed only the lessen has to be even more severe.
Also, hey, I was taught by Catholic nuns in the 50s- I know severe;) Oh, let’s do it anyway!
Limbaugh said a couple of weeks ago the Adminstration was quiet - where are the poll? They now have the “polls” so look forward to part 2. Bammy will speak.
If the Soviet Union had published polls, they would have looked like this.
All of AMerica has their noses filled with the stench of "the Unions".. especially public sector Unions..
BUT Unions in general have farted and are blaming someone else...
They farted in the elevator that is GOING DOWN not Up..
Its about time too.. they have poisoned the economic water and rotted America for decades..
Thank God for the Internet.. the green slimey truth is coming out like mucus..
Sadly... the dems aren’t intelligent enough to see past the talking points puked out by the LSm :/
How about the NYSlimes? The more the NYSlimes lies in vain attempt to credit the greedy union goons & thugs the more American people from the great middle look with disdain on the credibility of the NYSlimes, the more the NYSlimes readership continues to decline and the more revenue the NYSlimes continues to hemorrhage.
As Rush Limbaugh says: "Polls today are used to shape public opinion, not reflect it, pure and simple."
Limbaugh continues:
"'Asked how they would choose to reduce their state's deficits,' the Times adds, 'those polled preferred tax increases over benefit cuts for state workers by nearly two to one.'" Does anybody buy this? If this is the case, how in the heck did Walker win election? How did the Republicans take over the Senate? I mean, this is an out-and-out lie. "How do you square these figures with the results of last November's elections, in which anti-tax, anti-deficit, anti-public-union forces swept to historic victories in federal and state elections across the country? Well, you can't, of course. The Times doesn't even ask this blindingly obvious question, let alone try to answer it. But if you read down to the seventh paragraph of the story, which is on page 17, not page 1, an answer emerges:"'The nationwide telephone poll was conducted Feb. 24-27 with 984 adults and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points for all adults. Of those surveyed, 20 percent said there was a union member in their household, and 25 percent said there was a public employee in their household.'" So, "Although less than 12 percent of the workforce is unionized today," and by the way, the private sector number is light eight. "Although less than 12 percent of the workforce is unionized today 20 percent of the households in the survey had a union member. Although government workers are 17 percent of the workforce, 25 percent of the households surveyed had one living there.
"In other words, the sample was wildly skewed toward the very people most likely to give the answers the Times was hoping to hear," but you have to read to page 17 to get that information. So once again proving a bone of contention: Polls today are used to shape public opinion, not reflect it, pure and simple.
