Gingrich mulls timing, Cain gets spotlight
Atlanta Business Chronicle ^ | March 2, 2011 | Carla Caldwell

While former Georgia Sixth District Republican Congressman Newt Gingrich decides when he’ll make the expected announcement he’ll form an exploratory committee for the 2012 presidential race, Herman Cain, an already-presidential hopeful with Georgia ties is increasingly landing in the spotlight.

Cain, the conservative talk radio host and former Godfather’s Pizza executive, who in January announced formation of his exploratory committee, is making headlines this week in newspapers including the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, and on CNN.

Cain won the straw poll at a Tea Party Patriots conference over the weekend in Phoenix, and national media have taken notice. A Washington Post column says Cain’s win at the convention may be “a sign that his fledgling campaign may actually pack some punch in a key community heading into the 2012 vote.”

The WP column also notes that Cain received positive reviews in February following his “powerful and impassioned” speeches at the Conservative Political Action Conference, and in 2010 at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference.

Most of the write ups do say, however, that although Cain has picked up steam he is sure to face strong competition. Those who will, or might, enter the race, include Gingrich, Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum and Tim Pawlenty, and there’s still time for more. But no matter what, the Washington Post column states, Cain’s rousing speeches will make him a crowd-pleaser - and even if he doesn’t win he could become “a Tea Party kingmaker.”

Allen West’s speech did more for me than Cain’s.

Go CAIN! I read today that Newt is throwing out hints of West as a VP. How about West/Cain. Screw the insiders.

I’ve got four words for Newt.

Don’t waste our time.

Cain is an interesting candidate. Conservative, with a strong resume, including plenty of business success, and of course the obvious - he doesn't look like Haley Barbour.

...I'm listening.

Wait which party is Newt considering running for?

Seems to me his policies are more in line with Obama, than most Tea Party Americans.

No one is going to be elected President who gave his cancer-stricken wife divorce papers in her hospital room.

What a waste of time and money.

Has a private citizen, who has never held public office or been a commanding general, been elected President?

I don’t believe so. Good question.

West is very qualified. Cain would clean up the economy.
I do not want someone in there that wants to be or has been a nascar with their sponsors.

Can anyone truly Serve the people and not get bought?

The entire government needs laid off for good.
Dangle millions in front of someone and radical mobs own America.

I have listened to Cain speak. He got my attention. Take the time to listen to him and then look at his record. He has accomplished much in his life and his experience would be a welcome change at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave

No. Herbert Hoover, mining engineer and one time secretary of commerce is about as close as you can come. William H Taft never held prior elected office, but was a gubmint critter in judgeships, cabinet offices and the like.

No one is going to be elected President who gave his cancer-stricken wife divorce papers in her hospital room.

Precisely. Women will hate him once this becomes widely known.

He's also on his third wife. Might be ok for a RAT but not the GOP candidate.

"No one is going to be elected President who gave his cancer-stricken wife divorce papers in her hospital room. "

Didn't our last beloved candidate do the equivalent stunt with his injured wife? Yes, I do realize that the idiot didn't get elected President, but his history with his ex-wife wasn't an issue in the campaign at all.
