Maybe that's why young Mormon guys on their missions ride bikes?

That puts you in the minority then.

“Virginity is overrated”

If your goal is marriage and kids, waiting until you are married is the best way to go. People aren’t cars. You don’t ‘try them out’, unless you want to hurt yourself and a lot of other folks along the way.

Well, it is BYU.....

Mormons are down on pre-marital sex, up on procreation and post-marital sex.

As a private university run by a church, BYU certainly has the right to set its own rules on student conduct and to enforce them.

There is the nagging question whether the BB player was singled out because he was black. Was the girlfriend white? Given the LDS Church's record on race, it is a question.

Does not make a difference what the race. A school should have the right to set standards. Too many thugs in sports.

btw, Gov. Wilder of Virginia pardoned (?) a guy from criminal acts because he was a basketball player. I forgot the details. But the guy was quite a thug.

is this from 1911?

When I was in the Army, late 60s, shacking up was considered conduct unbecoming.

You could get an Article 32 for it.

I assume it because star basketball players, either in college or the NBA, don’t, as a general rule, turn out to be good, faithful husbands and fathers when they impregnate their girlfriends. However, it’s possible that the young man’s losing his place on the team will lead to marriage, graduation from some college with a useful degree, and many years of happy family life. It certainly would be nice if that were the outcome.

And some rules are far more stupid to follow than are others.

Then a person shouldn't agree to follow those "stupid" rules when accepting a scholarship to play basketball at BYU.

I don’t know much about Mormons, but i don’t think the general stereotypes of NBA/college bball players are likely in a mormon school.

Comapre this to the scene at Northwestern, was it?, recently where they had a naked sex-toy demonstartion as part of the class show-and-tell

People think that is really cute--and brag about how they would have gotten a front-row seat or whatever--but they are appalled that both this young man and his teammates are willing to abide by the code of virtue that once was taken for granted among observant Christians. Now where do you suppose young people today are more likely to get an education beneficial to society? Porno U or Brigham Young? I'll bet on the Mormons.

I’d give up my future NBA career for Marie Osmond. But, then again, the NBA doesn’t want old, slow guys. For that matter, Marie Osmond probably doesn’t want an old, slow guy either. Sigh. Two dreams dead in one day.

I am no fan of mormonism but I applaud their stance of upholding standards

Agree totally. I also admire BYU's stance of refusing to play on Sunday. While I'm also not Mormon, these kind of standards are really refreshing in this day and age of widespread lack of any sort of moral standing.

And Brigham “Bring’em” Young set such a fine example of chastity, faithfulness and monogamism for generations of young Mormons.

As did their Prophet Joseph Smith. Look it up.

I'd never buy a car without a test drive or two, or hundreds over at least 18 months if I wasn't sure how fun the car was to live with for a lifetime. . . .

(Yeah, you be sure you convey to all your future dates that they are comparable to a car test drive & that you continue to plan to test a lot of vehicles before you "traffick" in one particular vehicle that you'll buy like property...great winsomeness...and if you're still single...well, we understand why)

I'd never buy a car without a test drive...hundreds over at least 18 months if I wasn't sure how fun the car was to live with for a lifetime. . . .

(Gee. Why stop @ hundreds...? Why not follow the "LA Laker 'test drive' plan?")

First you could follow the "Wilt Chamberlain Plan" & sleep with literally thousands...
But, of course, you can't always tell a "lemon" by the mere surface qualities that you seem to seek...
So just a reminder that the "Magic Johnson plan" isn't always so "magical"...
You might be "testing" a lemon with a freeway drive only to have her stall on you in the middle of the commuter lane in LA...

I totally agree. Any athlete, even Mormon ones, with other D-1 scholarship offers should consider BYU as a very distant last resort.
