Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) has announced that he plans to introduce legislation to reverse the ban on incandescent light bulbs which is scheduled to go into effect January 1, 2014. The ban was included in a comprehensive energy bill that President George W. Bush signed into law in 2007 as an amendment, and was intended as a means of saving energy and limiting pollution.
Senator Enzis repeal legislation, the Better Use of Light Bulbs Act (BULB), S. 395, has 27 co-sponsors, including Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), the latter of whose office issued the following statement on the legislation:
The ban was intended to save on electricity costs and limit pollution by replacing traditional incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs).
However, CFLs are more expensive, many contain mercury which can be harmful even in the smallest amounts, and most are manufactured overseas in places like China. In September 2010, the last major GE manufacturing plant for incandescent light bulbs in the U.S. closed in Winchester, Virginia and 200 jobs were lost.
A similar bill, H.R. 91, was also introduced in the House by Representative Joe Barton (R-Texas), along with Reps. Michael Burgess (R-Texas), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), and 12 other Republicans.
Under the provisions of the legislation, the phase-out of incandescent light is to begin with the 100-watt bulb in 2012 and end in 2014 with the 40-watt. All light bulbs must use 25 percent to 30 percent less 2014. By 2020, bulbs must be 70 percent more efficient than they are today.

Let there be light.
CFLs make as much sense as goobermint mandated toilets.
Repeal this stupid “greenie” law.
Save the Light bulb vote Republican 2012.
You know, I never studied economics beyond the typical 5th-grade supply/demand, cost/price/profit stuff, but they didn't teach me that you could increase efficiency just by legislation.
They're doing it with cars, now with light bulbs. Who woulda thunk it?
Why don't we just legislate the government to be more efficient?
Need incandescent light bulbs that’ll last for 10 years if used on average of seven hours a day? They are rated for 25,000 hours. You can buy them from a company that markets products to the hospitality industry.

You can purchase a 24 pk of standard A19 bulbs for about $25.00.
Where does that stupid RINO Fred Upton, who coauthored the light bulb ban, and then was made head of the energy subcommittee this year by our stupid RINO leadership stand on this?
Does he support repealing his own stupid bill? I sure hope so. Upton is a prime illustration of how seniority trumps everything else in the politics as usual GOP, no matter how lousy that senior politician is.
finally, someone in D.C. making sense, lift the ban!
Welcome to The United States, up in lights, eh?
Might be better in the long run if he does veto it.
Distinctions need to be made.
I suppose the irony that this law was passed by a whole room full of dim bulbs is lost of them, huh?
Which gives me a chuckle as I remind about that world famous legislation for which John McCain spent so much of his time and political capital on....CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM!
Today we all wake up happier and healthier for McCain’s work on that piece of legislation and how important it is in today’s world.
They got nothing better to do than pass stupid laws.
McCain should be so proud of himself. So should this Upton RINO.
I am not in favor of the govt. mandating anything.
However, since I started replacing the lightbulbs in my house with the CFL’s , I have yet to replace one.
I replace the incandescent outside post light about every 6 months.
Also, the amount of mercury in one thermometer is about 5000x more than a CFL lightbulb.
Lastly, LED’s will eventually replace both CFL’s and incandescent bulbs. I have already replaced all my Christmas tree lights with LED’s. They have come down dramatically in the last 3 years. Plus they do not get hot.
who the hell is the federal govenment to tell me what kind of light bulbs to use...or what kind of toilet...or what kind of shower head....or to sort my garbage..or what kind of bags I get at the grocery store....or how many miles per gallon my truck gets....or how much electricity i get to use...please add to the list as you see fit
People in the US have lost their jobs already due to this act.
Politicians playing God because of their stupidity. I hate bureaucrats.
...and tack repeal of low-flow toilets onto this bill.
What do you do with them when they go out?
“Lastly, LEDs will eventually replace both CFLs and incandescent bulbs. I have already replaced all my Christmas tree lights with LEDs. They have come down dramatically in the last 3 years. Plus they do not get hot.”
Praying for the day LED replaces the 1000 Watts of lighting we have on our salt water reef aquarium. Right now our power meter spins like a 78 record. Even had cops knock on the door once suspecting we had a pot growing operation because we used so much more power than everyone else. Thankfully the Officer was very interested in the hobby and we had a good laugh and talked fish. Am told LED is coming for us - but how long?
