Mexican government calls for ‘working group’ to examine gun-walking charges

“Legislators from all of Mexico's three major parties in congress are calling for a joint U.S.-Mexico working group to examine accusations that U.S. federal agents allowed hundreds of guns to flow into Mexico,” The Associated Press reports.

Congressman Humberto Trevino has estimated the toll of “Project Gunwalker”* guns linked to injuries or deaths to date at 150, although his authoritative source for making that claim has, as yet, not been publicly disclosed. Still, with the totality of guns allowed to cross the border and the duration of such operations in question due to stonewalling and deception, the probability that these firearms have been and will continue to be used in crimes of violence on both sides of the border remains high.

Also undetermined: the make-up of group participants. Perhaps an existing working group addressing related issues can provide a sense of who some of the players might be. The U.S.-Mexico Working Group on Border Management provides a model of such joint efforts, and of significance includes guest participants from both the Embassy of Mexico and the U.S. Department of State.

This is, after all, an international incident.

Although I agree that Mexico should look into this, they have problems there that makes this pale in comparison.

Mexico isn’t in charge in many of their own cities.

Yup. They have no control over about a third of their country and Government forces are riddled with corruption. But at least they can still dump on the Gringos.
