Secretary Dave Ross regarding investigation of medical excuses issued at Capitol rallies

The Department of Regulation and Licensing (DRL) received numerous contacts from individuals expressing concern about physicians who were allegedly writing medical excuses for individuals attending rallies at the Capitol last month.

DRL staff reviewed all of the correspondence and determined that 64 individuals who contacted the department had specific information that would constitute a complaint. Based on the information provided by those 64 individuals, DRL identified 11 people who have been asked to provide information to the department about their activities at the Capitol. This group includes nine licensed physicians and two unlicensed individuals. The 11 individuals have been requested to provide their responses to DRL by March 21st.

Responses from the individuals in question will be considered by a screening panel of the Medical Examining Board which will decide whether to open investigations in these matters. If a case is opened for investigation, a more extensive fact-finding would occur and a recommendation would be made at the end of the process as to whether disciplinary action will be pursued.

Any charge against a physician is taken seriously and this is no exception. Rest assured, the agency is processing these complaints as quickly as possible. DRL will be working with the independent Medical Examining Board to appropriately review these complaints.

The DRL and MEB are charged with licensing qualified, competent physicians and enforcing discipline against physicians whose practice is substandard.

I've been wondering what the status of this investigation is, and glad to at least hear it's moving forward.

I'm surprised to see they received 64 complaints - that's a lot, considering they obviously had to come from people who do not approve of what was going on. So thanks to those patriots for coming forth with formal complaints!

Time will tell...

Department of Regulation and Licensing (DRL) is a joke.

Every member SAW fraud on TV, but they demand
others report it to investigate? GIVE ME A BREAK.

Is the Department of Regulation and Licensing (DRL)
unable to investigate obvious salient fraud ... on its own ?

What if the complaints are typed in the wrong font?

One would have to sign a complaint.
Brave souls.
Unionista thugs will try to intimidate them surely.

True, but if they hold a kangaroo court and pull the physicians license the legal beagles would have a field day in the courts with it. However, if they follow the procedures that all Wisconsin physicians are 'suppose' to follow and the physicians still get their license pulled they'll have a hard time convincing any court that it was unfair. Yes, it's a damned if you do - damned if you don't moment but you've got a lot more clout if you play it by the book.

They’ll get the same “punishment” that the Duke 88 got.

My husband is regulated under DORL in Wisconsin. He has served in the past on Advisory Committees and Law and Legislation Committees for his profession.

DORL is overworked and understaffed. The Wisconsin Medical Board is more proactive than DORL. Most communications to DORL involve a phone number and an answering machine, with response being in terms of weeks, if at all.

For non-medical licensees, few ethics or licensure violations are even processed, let alone acted upon. It is nearly a total joke. However, they are quite proactive when it is a question of paying license fees.

Agreed. And let me add that the fourteen AWOL Wisconsin legislators should pay some price for walking away from the jobs they were elected to do.

Kudos to Governor Scott Walker. I hope he has inspired others to have the moral courage he's shown.

Keep in mind the 64 Individuals whom identified the 9 licensed Physicians and 2 unlicensed (11 total) will not let the matter be dropped with just a slap on the hand. The 9 licensed physicians disciplinary action could mean a revocation of their license in Wisconsin.

If they are an instructor at the medical school of University of Wisconsin Madison, the students whom are under their supervision will not be allowed to finish their residency requirements. A 3 year resident cannot practice medicine without the supervisory of a licensed physician. the date of the infraction of the same physician would be the date of revocation. There could be lawsuits brought against UW Madison could add up to a little bit of money.

some people think there will people dragging their feet on this review.

There are physicians from many other states whom have submitted the videos that were aptly provided through YouTube, Fox News in addition to their complaints.

Probably by April 2011 the decisions will be made what will happen to the physicians in question.

Maybe the unions will hire them at $12 an hour to protest the bad govt officials?

Pssst! Most docs on those boards protect their own. They will tell you(or not) that one reason is fear of of a lawsuit over “restraint of trade”. Those 11 have nothing to fear.
