The external containment concrete dome seems to have gone, in the TV footage. That seems to be confirmed.

The operation at Fukushima No.1 plant to lower pressure of the containment vessel has been suspended due to high radiation levels at the site.

Those are definitely the conditions that can lead to an explosion with white smoke.

Would you believe we in Japan are just getting this news NOW ?

You are? I'm on the Eastcoast USA and watching NHK english live online for the last 3 hours and they've been updating by the second. They are showing before and after pictures of the blast.

You're not watching the taped version of Fox are you?

You may want to turn it on. They just gave instructions about washing yourself after going outside and avoiding fresh vegetables and other preparedness instructions when called for.

Surely there’s more that can be done.

-——I think they’ve been doing all they could...and I also think, the reason the headlines are being dribbled out like they have been is because they knew it was coming to this..

Comment from the Reuters feed:

The outside of the building would be the secondary containment boundary. We need to hope that the primary containment is still intact.

I heard CNN this morning say that some parts of the main island have reducted under the sea permanently ala Indonesia. I haven’t heard that from Fox, however. Lower sea level would explain why the tsunami came inland 6 miles in some areas.

blurb from AFP: FOCUS News Agency

Home / World

Tokyo. An explosion was heard Saturday from a quake-hit Japanese nuclear plant and smoke was seen billowing from it, as several workers were injured and radioactivity rose 20-fold outside, reports said, cited by AFP.

Above 900 C the Zircaloy cladding around the fuel reacts with steam to produce hydrogen. This is a likely source of the hydrogen for an explosion when they vented the vessel.

The plant generator may also be cooled by hydrogen, that would be another source.

If the former, then the fuel integrity has definitely been compromised.

Standard operating procedure. This conforms to common exercise scenarios andprocedures, so the dispatch of a field team does not indicate the extent of contamination. They are used to confirm or deny projected release path for gasious effluents based on plume projection models, etc.

See post number 27. And then learn something from it. Man is arrogant to think that he can plan against all things in nature.

There are many ways in which things can go wrong. For instance if a good sized meteor struck the ocean within hundreds of miles from Japan then it would have been all over for those plants in hours...Not days. We now know that waves of water are more a threat than an earth quake. Now it is possible that thousands of people might die over time, and that land may not be livable again during mans reign. That is if this gets as bad as it can get. And I admit that we don’t know yet. Some things are not worth the risk. I won’t respond to personal attacks- so please don’t bother. Anyone who knows me knows that I am as far from being a leftist as you can get.
