CAIRO (Reuters) - Arab states must intervene in Libya or risk unwanted foreign intervention, Oman's foreign minister told an Arab League meeting on Saturday.

European states hope the Arab League will take the lead in shaping policy towards the revolt that has divided Libya. The League has suspended Libya for its crackdown on an uprising against Muammar Gaddafi but has not severed all ties to Tripoli.

Gulf states including Oman have voiced strong criticism of Gaddafi and called for a no-fly zone over Libya, but the position of other Arab League states is not clear. Analysts doubt its members will agree unanimously on such action.

Egypt, buoyed by the revolution that swept Hosni Mubarak from power, could prove crucial in swaying opinion. States including Syria have been less critical of Gaddafi.

"What is needed now is Arab intervention using mechanisms of the Arab League and at the same time in accordance with international law," Omani Foreign Minister Youssef bin Alawi bin Abdullah said in his opening remarks to an Arab League meeting.

"We must look at various options that circumstances in Libya need," he said, giving brief opening remarks during a televised opening session over which he presided.....

They can urge action all they want but everybody knows that they can and will do nothing.

Seems we have a teachable moment.

It looks like the USA may not play the scapegoat this time and the Arab league has a bit of a predicament. Its just so much easier for them when we’re willing to face mideast ire.

Obamas ‘inner muslim’ will never allow him to oppose ANY muslims ANYWHERE, regardless of American interests OR ANY circumstances. Get used to it. Read the koran for more info.

Sounds like a winner.

More Muslim slaughter stirring up hatreds that will take decades to fade.

All you really have to do to keep the Islamic world in check is let them fight one another.

Thanks 2ndDivisionVet.

Gaddafi and his forces have chunks of the Arab League armies in their poo. Or at least, they will, if the Arab League tries a "police action".

Let the mighty forces of the Arab League clean up their own back yard. What? You can’t?

Come on all you OPEC countries, you have immense wealth, put it to good use. Show us how you can put on your grown up panties and solve your own mess.

And there’s the point, there. If the Arabs don’t want to do anything about it, why should we? All we’ll do is get classified as outsiders intervening where they’re not welcome.

The Arab league after considerable discussion finally voted to ask the UN to create/approve a no fly zone. Actually for Arabs, that was pretty quick and united action. Now let’s see how long it takes the UN to do something.

The Arab states in the aggregate have tons of money. If they really care about Libya, let them act.

We don’t have any money here so it really doesn’t matter whether we care or not.

Obozo needs to get his Muslim buddies interested in “spreading the responsibility around.”

So, arab states, take some of your ill-gotten money and do something. Leave the US alone and out of it.

Since they weren’t going to have to put anything into the effort, it’s probably understandable that they had no debate. Plus, they needed to scapegoat Gaddafi for their own failings to keep their own lids on.

Cut ‘em some slack, they’ve got a lot of stuff to pay for — fleets of warplanes, nuclear weapons development, the Taliban, Hamas, Hizbollah, Islamic Jihad, the Muslim Brotherhood, explosive vests, bottled water for the nighttime border crossing from Mexico, flight lessons in the US...

Don't forget laundered, bundled campaign contributions for friendly infidel politicians.

Buying a President with 2 million untracked, pre-paid Visa cards isn't cheap, and neither is maintaining madrases in US cities.

Khaddafy’s socialist Syrian islamofascist allies voted against the no-fly zone along with Algeria.
