Does anyone know what happens if all 3 troubled reactors go into complete meltdown?

Amen. Don’t assume, and when you are just an observer, don’t act to the psychological stresses of those actually dealing with the problem. Gunther’s statement is itself deadly. Words, too, in the wrong place at the wrong time can be radioactive. Gunther is committing murder with these words.

Fear and panic cause death.

Ah, the engineer's motto.

Trouble is that for those of us not intimately involved, there are few facts.

But what we do have is not promising.

Everyone in the White House is stoned on Hopium.

They don't even hear the phone ringing. Messages will be deleted without being played.

We'd probably be better off if there were no one there at all.

I guess by "other people", you meant you.

Amusing.

I don’t know who exactly is on this man’s staff,

Then stop speaking with authority about it, Gunther.

As for me, I have a science degree from a leading US university so I’m quite familiar with the basic chemistry and physics of nuclear reactors. I know what it means when the utility company pulls all its employees out of the power plant because the radiation levels are so high. That means they’re losing this battle, and badly.

And what does it mean when they go back in and go back to work? Or did you not catch that?

You have a very disparaging attitude towards other posters on this site.

Only when they are pushing panic.

My advice to you is to not underestimate other people who post on this site. They may not know everything about this situation, but they know more than you think.

You know only what the media has told you, and they have an agenda.

The Fukushima 50 not afraid to die

They are likely going to have to try a suicide mission. Very sad!

That’s it? That’s all he has, and he makes an inflammatory statement like that!? Just damn.

Someone needs to slap this idiot attention whore silly and tell him to sit down and shut up.

Duct tape and plastic sheeting are highly recommended items
to have around for anyone everywhere (at least in sub
arctic areas...) You might check the duct tape. ISTR that
it sometimes dries out.

The fire bombings also killed more than the nuke bombs.

And don’t even start about the targeting of civilians (which the Allies did) on both fronts.

I’ll wait for Shep Smith to burst into tears before becoming concerned.

THAT won't take long. He could have played the 'Yellow makes me sad' character in the GEICO commercial without a moment's study.

To my knowledge, the world has never experienced a complete run away meltdown.

Correct me if I’m wrong.

Just what does happen once folks cannot get close enough to cool down the core?

and containment has been breached

The problem is that the media appears to be using the word "containment" to describe the reactor vessel itself, not the containment vessel that is designed to hold in even a full meltdown. This leads to conflicting reports.

That said, I wouldn't bet my house on those containment vessels being 100% intact. They are some of the toughest things humans build, but not only was this earthquake close to 16 times what the builders anticipated as the worst case, according to wikipedia a 9.0 is more than twice as powerful than the Krakatoa eruption. Good grief!

Important Questions.

I want to get this right. I understand that the Potassium Iodide tablets are used to saturate the thyroid with Iodine to prevent it from taking up radioactive iodine which may or may not materialize in any particular geographical area.

  1. Is KI the only type of Iodine suitable for this purpose? I understand it has potential serious side effects. I have a bottle of Iodine Gluconate, a dietary mineral supplement produced by Oligocan. Recommended dose is one teaspoon/day (ordinary circumstances).

  2. Will this substance work as well as KI? It seems to be a much safer alternative should anyone need to take prophylactic precautions.

  3. How much to take?
