Western allies stepped up military pressure against Moammar Gadhafi, sending warships and fighter planes to the region to enforce a U.N. authorized no-fly zone, even as Libyan forces shelled a rebel-held city despite declaring a cease-fire.
President Barack Obama demanded Friday that Gadhafi halt military assaults against civilians and said that if the Libyan leader did not stand down the United States would join in military action against him.

The sad thing is, Gadhafi is safe in that respect for a couple of years. Maybe in January, 2013, Sarah or Michele will challenge him. I'm betting he would back down immediately for either of them.

For him it's an end game. The only way he'll respond to threats and the use of force is if we frame it in context with an exit for him. Otherwise this is a nothing to loose situation and he'll go down in a bloody mess.
The world is stranger than fiction. Here's a man that killed Americans, sponsored terrorism, was ruthless as a dictator, was involved in ship hijackings, arms trade to rouge nations, fired missiles on Sicily, declared 1/3 of the Mediterranean as his national waters and threatened to attack all those that entered this space....... and today we find ourselves in the precarious situation of trying to formulate an exit strategy for him or else risk massive blood shed in his own country. How does one help someone who in reality you'd like to see hang?
In other news, I was very surprised to hear the present of the United States rule out the use of US ground forces - shouldn't we keep a mad cracker like Qadaffi guessing about something like that? I think a smarty would have kept that ace in the hole.
