Did I miss a Declaration of War? (vanity)

Posted on 03/19/2011 4:02:39 PM PDT by Leaning Right

I just watched the news. US ships are firing at Libya. I was out fishing this morning, so I missed the early reports. Did we declare war on Libya? Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution grants Congress the exclusive power to declare war, so that's what happened...right?

This is not a war, it’s a police action.

President Barack Obama hosted 18 senior lawmakers at the White House on Friday afternoon to “consult” with them about the new plan to intervene in Libya, exactly 90 minutes before Obama announced that plan to the world and one day after his administration successfully pushed for authorization of military force at the United Nations.

Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN) complained on Thursday that the administration had not properly consulted Congress before deciding to support military intervention in Libya, and called for a formal declaration of war by Congress before military action is taken. Inside the White House meeting, several lawmakers had questions about the mission but only Lugar outwardly expressed clear opposition to the intervention, one lawmaker inside the meeting told The Cable.

The other lawmakers in attendance were Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-TX), Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD), Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Sen. John Kyl (R-AZ), Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Rep. Buck McKeon (R-NY), Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), and Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA).

Deputy National Security Advisor Denis McDonough held a conference call with top Congressional staffers on Friday afternoon where he emphasized Obama’s “deep respect for Congress in all of these matters,” and gave a read out of the White House meeting. A recording of the call was provided to The Cable.

“The president expects the preponderance of our involvement to last a matter of days, not weeks,” McDonough said.

Silly man...the UN tells us when to go to war. Our faux-representatives don’t get to vote on small stuff like war. They are busy looking busy and arguing about NPR funding.

You missed it. It was just after the massive anti-war rallies at the White House.

Well i´m not shure that you need a declaration of War to enforce a UN resolution.
But anyway yes enforcing a no fly zone (and firing tomahawks into a country is an act of war).

When a Republican does this, it’s an “illegal provocation” that circumvented Congress’ constitutional rights. When a Democrat does it, it’s just cool.

Obama only answers to the UN. Congressional approval is no longer needed. What is more disturbing is that I seem to miss any Republican mentioning this.

So now they get to send our troops into a battle without any approval from our representatives.

it’s just a no-fly zone

with other actions “necessary to protect civilians”

and $200 million or more in cruise missiles shot down some sandbowl toilet just the first day

move along my US Constitution-bound friend, this is a “UN” action tasking US forces into hostility against another sovereign nation, nothing to see here

Somehow the Obama supporters will find reason for the U.S. to get involved while were the same people who bitched all along about Iraq.

I’m continually amazed by how many FReepers don’t understand what a treaty is. Just because Ron Paul can’t comprehend the concept it doesn’t mean that you can’t grasp it either.
