Many Blacks Abandoning North/Urban Areas, Moving South/Suburban (for same reasons everyone else is)
NYTimes ^

Posted on 03/26/2011 3:51:36 AM PDT by quesney

WASHINGTON — The percentage of the nation’s black population living in the South has hit its highest point in half a century, according to census data released Thursday, as younger and more educated black residents move out of declining cities in the Northeast and Midwest in search of better opportunities.

The Rev. Ronald Peters, above, who moved last year from Pittsburgh to Atlanta, said the black middle class was more hopeful in the South than in the Northeast.

The share of black population growth that has occurred in the South over the past decade — the highest since 1910, before the Great Migration of blacks to the North — has upended some long-held assumptions.

Both Michigan and Illinois, whose cities have rich black cultural traditions, showed an overall loss of blacks for the first time, said William Frey, the chief demographer at the Brookings Institution.

And Atlanta, for the first time, has replaced Chicago as the metro area with the largest number of African-Americans after New York. About 17 percent of blacks who moved to the South in the past decade left New York State, far more than from any other state, the census data show.

At the same time, blacks have begun leaving cities for more affluent suburbs in large numbers, much like generations of whites before them.

“The notion of the North and its cities as the promised land has been a powerful part of African-American life, culture and history, and now it all seems to be passing by,” said Clement Price, a professor of history at Rutgers-Newark. “The black urban experience has essentially lost its appeal with blacks in America.”

[...]

“This is the decade of black flight,” said Mr. Frey. “It’s a new age for African-Americans. It’s long overdue, but it seems to be happening.”

L.A. proved too much for the man,
So he’s leavin’ the life he’s come to know,
He said he’s goin’ back to find
Ooh, what’s left of his world,
The world he left behind
Not so long ago.
He’s leaving,
On that midnight train to Georgia,
And he’s goin’ back
To a simpler place and time.
And I’ll be with him
On that midnight train to Georgia,
I’d rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine.

So their parents trashed the areas their grandparents built and instead of fixing the problem they more south to trash those areas.

Just great.

About like the halfbacks in NC.

Only to point this out...but it doesn’t matter what ethnic group you are...once you figure out that you can afford a house out away from the city (in a safer neighborhood), then you will move. Cities like St Louis, Omaha, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philly, and Madison are in the same path. Over the next forty years...we will all be shocked as inner cities across the US are vacated and other cities become like Detroit in the end.

Blacks are moving out of the Ghetto’s for much the same reason whites did.

They want better conditions to raise their children in and they want to live in peaceful neighborhoods where they can walk the street in safety.

The trouble is that they bring the problem with them.
The kids that they bring to better neighborhoods were the problem with the old neighborhood.

I hope that you are correct because the net/net of all this would be more purple states as blacks bring Democrat voting tendencies.

If they realize that the reason cities are a wreck is Democrat policies and behaviors then this would be a good thing for the South.

Everybody talks about how stupid Southerners are..blah blah blah. Yet for decades they sent their old here to spend winters and to retires. NOW they ALL want to move here and litter our city/county councils cause golly gee, they just know so much more than us.

After yesterday's news of the salary that snob Ken Feinberg, I'm having a hard time finding my 'southern hospitality'.

Hey, in the 60s and 70s, they were imported to Madison, Wisconsin by the do-good social workers to create jobs for themselves and they have done an exceptional job, along with the liberal pukes from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, the RAT Party and the Labor Unions, to trash what was the best city to live in in America in the 50s!

Oh great. The Black freeloaders have driven the cities in the North into unsustainable debt, so now they head South, where they’ll be agitating for all the freebies that they voted for in the bankrupt North and they’ll be voting for Black “gimme” Democrats. If you object, you’re a “racist”, of course.

In many cities, the inner city may recover due to gentrification. Doubt that will ever happen in Detroit though—too far gone. They will eventually have to bulldoze much of it down and re-establish parks (or even farms).

Some folks can run but they can’t hide. When the vast majority of black Americans realize they are beholden to the RATS and unions, then they will achieve economic freedom. The great society did nothing more than keep black folks in poverty.

So let me see if I have this straight.

The blacks are moving to the South.

The Mexicans are moving North from Mexico -- where they will meet the Blacks moving South.

Will they gang up on Whitey or fight each other for the "preferred victim status" racial spoils?

Will the Blacks and Mexicans form rival gangs (as is reportedly the case in prisons) for mutual protection?

Speaking of gangs, who will run the drug trade? Will the Mafia move down too, from New York and New Jersey?

Makes me even happier I live in Minnesota.

And if it comes here, I'm moving to the Dakotas, or Montana, or Idaho, or Wyoming.

Cheers!

Cities ought to become a thing of the past. We’ll still need some industrial/transport functions—airports, shipping ports. Outside of that, what is the point of having a city? I have no use for them at all.

What worries me so much about that is

a) the lack of assimilation

b) the number of young Somali men "disappearing" overseas -- presumably for Islamist training.

I live 70 miles from Detroit and about 30 miles from Ann Arbor and you would think we were deep in the bible belt from the conservative attitudes around here.

I know what you mean. I'm in northwestern New Jersey, about 50 miles or so from NYC, and yet it's basically NASCAR country out here--hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, etc.

I wonder--do cities create liberals, or do liberals create cities? If there were fewer cities, would there be fewer liberals?

I live less than 10 miles west of NYC, and you’d think you were in Lima, Peru; every year fewer signs in English, more foreign flags hanging without an accompanying American flag (though it looks great during the World Cup; flags everywhere), less places for an American to eat...

NJ really has everything; mountains to the shore, just about every nationality, etc. You live in the large western “American sector” of NJ, though it is changing; I couldn’t believe how many Hispanics were out there when we took the children to pick pumpkins.

Although there is no discussion of the political repercussions of the demographic changes described in the posted article, the take here is that Republicans stand to benefit overall, particularly in the redistricting of state legislatures and the US House which will largely take place this year. There will be less representation and less clout for predominantly black cities, typified by Detroit, which lost 25% of its population. Since blacks are addicted to the Democrats far more than any other racial/ethnic voting bloc, there will be an inevitable loss of overwhelmingly Democratic seats in general. (You can bet that if the New York Times thought the Democrats would be better off, they would have boasted about it in the story.)

Furthermore, the redistricting will be done by state legislatures which are now more Republican on the whole than they were in the last redistricting 10 years ago.

Blacks might get quickly cured of their addiction in the South, because their love of Dems might be more based on living in blighted but densely populated coastal urban areas, than on the Dems’ questionable benefits to blacks per se. If you live in Detroit and there are no jobs, then food stamps, welfare, WIC, unemployment, rent subsidies, etc., are a lifeline, and you fear whites because you never meet any. If you live in Greensboro, NC, whites are your neighbors, their dialect is not dissimilar to your own, and it’s easier to start your own business, and thus resent high taxes. If you live in a rural area, gun control laws seem idiotic nuisances. If you live in Detroit, guns seem a dangerous menace, and you wish there was some way of getting rid of them. And so on and so forth.

Anyone who thinks that the North is less racist than the South, should remember the riots over school bussing in Boston in the 70s. Liberal northerners love blacks as long as they don’t have them for neighbors, or have one of them dating their daughter.

It is absurd to expect people with options to stay in a rathole not of their making.

I heard a suburban preacher once who suggested that in the interest of "justice" we should all send our kids to innercity schools--level the playing field you might say. I told him "you go first." That ended that little discussion. All these black families would want is the best for their children, just as I have.

You make some interesting points there about blacks moving north to south, but it will take many years for any major statistical changes in voting patterns. For 2012, assuming that blacks will have Obama to vote for, don't anticipate any dropoff in their 'Rat allegiance, regardless of geography.

In the future, the emergence of solid black elected Republican officials in the South, such as the two new black congressmen, might help change things.
