LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Monday morning, prompting a tsunami warning, according to reports from the region. The quake hit near Miyagi prefecture, which suffered extensive damage in the catastrophic March 11 temblor, at 7:24 a.m. (6:24 p.m. U.S. Eastern time), according to Kyodo News. Dow Jones Newswires said the quake was centered off the coast. No injuries or damage were immediately reported. A tsunami warning was issued shortly after the quake, however the resulting wave was expected to be relatively small in size, according to CNBC.

The difference between a 9 and a 6.5 earthquake is the 9 is about 400 times as powerful.

Aftershocks.

It is possible that there will be more aftershocks, and they CAN be 7 or 8 magnitude shocks. But 6.5 is nothing to sneeze at. I was in a 6.8 quake once.

Possible offset - see post 2...... 5 kilometers deep is very, very shallow.

I’ll bet it isn’t. I live in middle Tennessee where the ground is nice and firm and only moves when I have had too much to drink ;)

There is good news on this earthquake:

(1) revised to 6.1 magnitude by USGS

(2) depth revised to 17.1 kilometers

I don't think there is much of a problem with a tsunami with those numbers. Tsunami's tend to be bad around 7.0 magnitude and very shallow.

Though 17.1 kilometers is shallow, it is not as shallow as 5 kilometers...
