SANA, Yemen The United States, which long supported Yemens president, even in the face of recent widespread protests, has now quietly shifted positions and has concluded that he is unlikely to bring about the required reforms and must be eased out of office, according to American and Yemeni officials.
The Obama administration had maintained its support of President Ali Abdullah Saleh in private and refrained from directly criticizing him in public, even as his supporters fired on peaceful demonstrators, because he was considered a critical ally in fighting the Yemeni branch of Al Qaeda.
The Americans have been pushing for transfer of power since the beginning of those negotiations, the official said, but have not said so publicly because they still were involved in the negotiations.

No leadership out of DC.
Things change as often as the wind direction.
That’s because the wrong guy is in the Oval Office.
Just like in Egypt...
“My Muslim faith...”
Mmm mmm mmm.
He’ll be replaced with someone a lot worse.
Egypt, Libya, and now Yemen? If there was any doubt there is a pattern here, it’s gone. The Obama admin is definitely trying to prop up radical Muslim regimes across the Middle East.
Well Mr. Peanut pretty much threw the Shah of Iran under the bus and we all know how that worked out.
Yemen is already a hotbed of terrorism, we better hurry up and arm them.
I think this could be very dangerous. Yemen is the most dangerous hotbed for extremism geopolitically, since, if the Islamists gain control there, it is only a matter of time before they are able to topple the precarious regime in Saudi Arabia.
Once that happens, it’s game over for any kind of “moderate” Islam. Most westerners do not understand the significance of this, but perhaps comparing it to medieval Europe is enlightening. Saudi Arabia is a bit like the Vatican, in that, if the radical ideologies take control there, the theological advantage they will gain in the Muslim world will be orders of magnitude more important than the strategic advantage they will gain, even with all of Arabia’s oil reserves.
Why aren’t we pushing to remove Hamid Karzi, who caused the Koran-burning riots, and is thus responsible for the subsequent murders?
The U.S. has apparently switched sides. We seem to be pro alQuada and MB now?
I am really lost on what we are doing. It seems inconsistent?
The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
For crying out loud!
I’m sure Hitlery and 0bama are working on that right now.
I am really lost on what we are doing. It seems inconsistent?
0bama is very consistent......in undermining and harming the United States.
Welcome to Free Republic.
Pushing to remove a president?!?
Show us HOW!!!! (I’m taking notes....any help will be appreciated. I’ve got a pansy-in-chief, here.....)
People forget that Obama fired cruise missiles into Yemen couple years back. It was easy to miss because he was on his European Nobel Peace prize tour.
The scary part beyond the loss of oil is that there will be no united Muslim front if the Saudis and most of the region fall. It will then turn to Sunni v. Shia, Brotherhood v. Al-Queda, radical faction A v. radical faction B. I can’t think of a worse turd pile scenario.
I wonder if 0baMao uses an American coin when deciding his foreign policies?
Allies? We don’t need no stinkin’ allies.
No, I think you’ve missed it. If the radicals gain control of Saudi Arabia the Shia vs. Sunni, etc will be a non-issue. The Muslim world has been awaiting Islamic fundamentalists gaining control of the holy places for centuries, so they will unite behind the new regime. This will be the Caliphate, and all Muslims will unite behind them as long as they promise to take the war to the infidels.
I’d forgotten. Everything about the evil bastard is fraudulent.
What do you mean, no leadership?!
Obama knows exactly what he is doing. He is getting rid of any leader in the Middle East who has provided stability. He’s making sure the Muslim Brotherhood controls the entire area.
0bama uses whatever coin Soros hands him at the time.
Hes making sure the Muslim Brotherhood controls the entire area.
He’s helping them bring in the Caliphate. The Muslim Brotherhood is one of their tools.
0marxo is consistently promoting chaos and instability to give opportunity to jihadists in the middle east.
Long ago I came to realize you can not rely on just the words of 0marxo -he will say whatever is expedient in the moment --you can not just judge him on words alone but must judge his actions.
As well, you can not rely alone upon his sometimes conflicting and confusing actions -he will do whatever is expedient in the moment or even do one thing while claiming to be doing something else --you can not just judge him on words or actions alone but must judge his results.
In the mideast there has been enough time to suggest the results are consistent --whether by words, silence, action, or inaction we see 0marxo promoting chaos and instability thus providing opportunity to jihadists in the middle east. The end game appears to include the death of Christians, the destruction of Israel and finally the beginning of a full scale jihadist war upon the West.
How long will it take the dimwits at the NYT to finally realize that all along Obama has been working to damage America's critical allies?
My God, the man is a muslim terrorist.
There is no other answer for him throwing all this power to the Islamists in the mid-east. Egypt, Libya, Yemen.
This is getting ridiculous.
Good memory! The strike was Dec 2009.
‘The US is facing fresh questions over its role in a deadly attack in late 2009 on an alleged al-Qaeda camp in Yemen, after a rights group published what it said was new evidence of US involvement in the strike....
55 people, including 14 women and 21 children, died in the attack, which also killed 14 alleged al-Qaeda members.
After the attack, the Yemeni government said that it carried out the strike alone, but reports soon began to emerge that the US military had played a role in the attack on the orders of the White House.”
