As an American in the United States of America, you are allowed to do many things.
You can burn the flag. You can burn the Bible. You can produce obscene art and sometimes even get government money to finance it.
You can make movies and TV shows that ridicule Christianity, traditional morality, and that take the Lord's name in vain.
If anybody objects to this, you can just accuse him of trying to impose his values on others. Then start talking about the Salem Witch Trials and the Spanish Inquisition.
Yes, you can do all those things, and more.
But can you burn a Koran?
Yes, but maybe not for long.
Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center, in Gainesville, Florida, became the target of world condemnation last year when he announced he would burn a copy of the Koran in protest.
President Obama didn't want him to do it. Neither did General David Petraeus, commander of U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
Actress/Activist Angelina Jolie spoke out against it. I'm still waiting for Angelina to speak out against anti-Christianity in Hollywood.
As a result of his plan to burn a Koran in the U.S.A., Terry Jones received death threats. His website was shut down. The mortgage on his church's property was called in and -- what a coincidence -- the church's property insurance was cancelled. The city of Gainesville threatened to charge the church for protection. And who knows what else happened behind the scenes? All this happened to a private group which wanted to burn a privately-owned book on private property.
What if the powers that be decide your private activity is objectionable ?
In the end, Jones decided not to burn the Koran.
That was seven months ago. But now, he and his group have finally...

If this BS goes down, I can GUARANTEE there wil be many less Korans laying around.....
OK, those out there that know who you are.
Time to start telling this writer that he is as loony as the Pastor that dared to exercise his Constitutional Rights.
How about condemning the UNJUSTIFIED EXTREME REACTION AND KILLING by MUSLIMS?!?!?
While I think Terry Jones is an idiot and possible agent of change, if they try to outlaw burning a koran it will guarantee that I burn a whole stack of them myself.
Let me get this straight, it is ok to burn the US Flag or wear it on the seat of your pants and it will be illegal to burn that POS book? Not on my watch.
I haven't see any liberals proposing that but I am still amazed that the SCOTUS declared that burning a cross is NOT protected free speech but burning a flag is. I assume that was another result of Justice O ‘Conner's flip a coin decisions.
Is burning the Qu’ran offensive? Of course it is. So is burning a Bible, the Rig Veda, the Torah, the Dhammaphada, or any other text that people hold to be sacred. Not to mention blowing up churches, Sufi shrines, torching Jewish synagoges and American flags, and of course beheading people with dull butter knives in the name of God.
Nonetheless, as a wonderful friend of mine told me many years ago, the greatest thing about America is that you have the constiutionally protected right to be an a$$#ole. Pastor Jones is simply excercising this right. When anyone speaks of outlawing an offensive act in order not to offend the rights of a minority (or even the majority) then I have a problem. In this case, the proposed remedy is worse than the illness it’s intended to cure. Pastor Jones is an attention-whore, but it’s within his rights to be one. Enough said. As Voltaire once put it, “I disagree with everything you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”
If muslimisum were a newly developed technique for psychotherapy, its use would be banned world wide and it’s practitioners imprisoned.
In all honesty, I believe the cross burning issue will always be determined by who does it where. If a KKK member burns a cross on a black family’s lawn it will not be protected. If a liberal burns a cross anywhere other than on a black family’s lawn, it will be protected. Heck, it will probably be cheered by the same people who will say no to burning a Koran.
Koran burning should stay legal. Perhaps more should be burned rather than less. Islam is a violent, aggressive religion which needs to be challenged. Right now it is conquering decadent Europe without a shot being fired.
It’s amazing and sad that this is the state of affairs in 2011.
A quick correction; I said, “.......the right of a minority (or even the majority)”. I should have used ‘sensibilities’ in lieu of the word ‘rights’.
Yep.
Exactly what I said yesterday.
Make buring the Koran illegal and those things will be aflame all across the USA.
The First Amendment doesn’t give you the right to yell “FIRE” during a beheading. Someone could get hurt if you did.
Not on my watch either, July 4, 2011 should become a BURN A KORAN day as a way of celebrating our Right of Free Speech.
Will Koran Burning Be Banned In The United States?
Before it got to that my support for our involvement in Afghanistan would come to a halt.
Let there be NO mistake. We are not in Afghanistan to protect their freedom and create a democracy. We are there to protect our freedom and democracy it just so happens we’re doing it by giving them a taste of freedom of their own.
If the result is to be banning any form of freedom of speech here in the USA, we lost the battle of Afghanistan. Time to bring them home.
And how much longer will it be legal for Jews to own a copy?
ML/NJ
Where does one buy a koran and how much does one cost?
There are places that give away Bibles, (The Gideons). Is there such a place that gives away korans?
I’d like to burn some of them too but I don’t want to actually pay for one, that would profit some muzzie organization.
I think it is fine for you to have the right to do it but if you do, I hope you are fine with an American mother receiving a folded flag for it. You are dealing with irrational savages and a weak president.
I don’t think it should be illegal. If you want to do it, that’s cool but my child isn’t over in Afghanistan with those lunatics either.
I know I’ve been consistent on this issue all along. I’ve supported people’s right to burn a flag, though I think they’re jackasses. The same here, I support Pastor Jone’s right to burn a Koran though I think he’s a jackass. I wish both of these things would not happen, but I would not stop people from doing it. No need to put our troops in any more danger than they have to be. What Pastor Jones did by burning the Koran, made our troops less safe. That’s just a plain fact.
What bothers me the most in this whole thing is the chilling words of Senator Graham. “Free speech is a great idea, but we’re at war”. It’s not an idea Senator Graham. It’s a natural right given to us by our creator. This is one of the worst aspects of a free society going to war. The possibility of suppressing our rights and freedoms may be at stake in the name of “security”. It’s funny, all of these leftist pinkos complained about the Patriot Act where the gubmint was going to monitor our phone calls and look at what library books we checked out. That was all malarkey. Yet now when Senators hint at a true natural right being supressed, the left says nothing. Oh, yeah. Forgot, Obama’s President....
If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
If someone burns a koran, and no one is around to sensationalize it, does matter?
The conversation in this world SHOULD be about the real atrocities like Christians being beheaded for refusing Islam.
If this government bans the burning of the koran then America no longer exsists.
Why not just say yes, and leave out the...’but maybe not for long’? The fact is yes, the maybe just gets people all riled up. It’s not the least bit necessary or productive.
Good point. Of course my point was to say that the KKK burning anything won’t be protected, while a liberal burning anything will. Granted, a liberal won’t burn a Koran, but it will be because they are afraid of Muslim rage and not because of any sort of reverence.
After 9-11 a moozlum organization offered kurans for free. I asked for one but they never sent it. Liars. So I bought a paperback copy and burned it in protest.
What does it say when his insurance is cancelled and the police want to charge him for protection? To me it just proves that everyone knows muslims are a bunch of crazy, violent people.
This situation was parodied pretty well on comedy central:
South Park is in a panic when Family Guy shows an episode featuring the Muslim prophet Muhammad as a character. The townspeople hide in the Community Center for fear of a terrorist attack when the second half of the two-parter, without censorship, will be shown. Kyle, who likes the show, finds no problem and thinks the censorship is wrong, but Cartman disagrees, declaring that it is right to do this. Kyle thinks that he is faking, but, when Cartman gives an impassioned speech about keeping people from getting hurt, he is guilt-ridden. After thinking terribly of his little brother Ike getting killed by a terrorist bomb, Kyle agrees to go with Cartman to get the episode pulled. The people of South Park, meanwhile, decide to literally bury their heads in the sand, so as to show Islamists that they have no part in the insult.
South Park episodes #142+143: Cartoon Wars Part I+II
A FReeper suggested finding a title page from an online Koran, printing it, taping it onto some paperback book, and then burning it.
Want to make something popular?
Ban it.
Korans would be burning all over if the gub mint made it illegal.
Oh yeah, what about that little freedom of speech freedom of expression thingy?
Yet it’s ok to have a photo of Christ in a bottle of piss?
Need to gets me a Koran just in case.
My support for the "mission" ended on the day our military confiscated and burned the Bibles. From that day forward I have said we need to get out of Afghanistan. We have set up a government there that is destined to be as tyrannical as the one we went there to overthrow. And now our own government is poised to strip our own citizens of their liberty.
No more blood for Islam.
Oh fine AbroadAmerican,
Quoting Voltaire now?
Here?
My support dropped considerably then too. It should have been where it all was lost for me also to tell you the truth.
The more our governments try to use this to trash the first amendment the more people will think they need to burn korans to make a point - not to muslims, but to our own government.
When I first moved to Florida I’d drive highway 19 through Hudson.
Large KKK group there at the time and they’d gather for a cross burning once in a while.
Actually would have a piece of plywood announcing it and inviting everyone (well not everyone but) most everyone to come for a grand old time.
Never visited the place but sure felt odd about it. Course I was raised in L.A. unified schools.
And we know Obama went to the United Nations to complain about Arizona so you can imagine if there were revolts because of the government taking away our freedom of speech, you can almost bet we'll see French, German and Russian military jets flying over our skies after Obama takes that crisis to the UN as well.
Incredible. During WW2 we encouraged HUMILIATION of the enemy as a way to fire up our side for a tough fight. Now we practically jail people trying to do the same.
At one time CAIR would send you one for free.
I think every koran should be burned.
So, how do Christians get this level of respect out of the government and the left?
Do we need to behead more people?
Is it still illegal for a muslim to burn a church?
What the heck is our “mission” in Afghanistan right now? To prop up an Islamic government that executes converts to Christianity and bans the Bibles and all religious freedom and freedom of speech and conscience? Is this what we are sending our children to die for?
Actually that is what the decision says. You can burn all the crosses you wish, but you cannot burn them on public are other peoples property.
Evidentally
My support dropped considerably then too.
I think that there have been plenty of reasons to drop support: Suicidal ROE, no coherent explanation for why we are even there, ordering "strongly suggesting" women soldiers should wear headscarves rather than kevlar helmets, torching Bibles, courts martial for SEALs who allegedly roughed up a well known and high value terrorist, rampant corruption, providing security for China to mine the lithium in AF, billions in aid to Pakistan, billions in US money to ultimately increase productivity of the poppy fields, and now we have General Betray-us along with sitting US Senators condemning the very same US Constitution they swore to uphold - all because they are afraid of, or in awe of a primitive, cave dwelling, Islamic guerrilla army.
If all that AF has given us is massive debt, a demoralized and spent military, a loss of freedom and liberty, and a platform to advance the moon cult and demonize Christianity, then it fails in every category in meriting any American support and for the sake of our civilization's future, immediately stopped.
Very good points

Watch this fabulous Colorado woman call out Graham, and then burn various pages of the koran after reading quotes. She uses slices of bacon as her book marks.
Shunning all family, friends, and political officials who evince cultural cowardice would be a good start.
I would be more prone to believe that those soldiers and their families are fighting for the right that the Pastor is practicing.
Than bend their knees to the fear which seems to have overtaken a large segment of American society, either you hold that Constitution to mean something or you do not!
Or is it your belief that giving the terrorist what they want is more “right”?
