DEVELOPING: Congressional leaders, with barely an hour to go before a federal government, announced late Friday night they had reached a deal to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year.
House Speaker John Boehner, speaking briefly to reporters after talks had concluded, said the plan was to pass one last short-term spending resolution Friday night to buy lawmakers the time needed to prepare and pass the final budget bill.

It’s not a viable option for the long run, because while the federal government is bloated, intrusive, and much too costly, it still does a lot of vital functions like running the military, running the FBI, CIA, FAA, DOT, federal courts, and the social security administration.
All the reports I heard today said that none of the vital services that you mention would be shutdown.
We could disband the Dept. of Education and nobody would even notice, but we need most of the federal government to function over the long term to keep our country and our economy running and maintain national security. That’s why an endless stalemate and shut down is not a viable option for the GOP leadership.
If the people of this country are on our side, then the shutdown would not be endless. It would end when the Democrats cave.

Those open Senate votes are going to have HUGE implications for 2012, because so many Dems have to defend seats.
Manchin even CAMPAIGNED on repealing Obamacare, and others know their future may hinge on this ONE vote, after what happened in 2010.

I also agree with your larger point, but add a caveat - sometimes, you need to marshall your forces. Dieppe proved that the Allies weren't ready to invade Fortress Europe in 1942; unrelenting pressure through many smaller engagements while building up forces for the main push led to the success of Operation Overlord. In the same way, pressure on the Lefties that builds to 2012 is the only way we achieve ultimate victory.

Tens of millions of Americans receive Federal benefits. They are not on our side, and they put Barry into office. That is the reality we have to change, but making the addict quit cold turkey is a sure way to lose.

But let me ask you this: in what way would taking the Dems to the wall on this issue through a shutdown that Rasmussen said 57 percent of the people would approve to lower spending not be a way to ratchet up pressure?
And please do not misunderstand (and I trust you don’t): I’m going to be in the front line for the 2012 debate. I just honestly don’t feel we did all we could this time around. You are welcome to try to change my mind.
I don't understand why so many people here are incapable of thinking strategically. I'll admit the Republicans need to market themselves better and go on the offensive a little more. However, the sad fact is that there isn't a single statewide or national race that can be won with the support of Freepers alone. We'll never see all of our dreams come to fruition, but that shouldn't mean we must therefore entrench ourselves at the expense of advancing at least a few feet in the right direction. If we can get the Democrats to meet us two-thirds of the way, as we did tonight, then we've made progress upon which we can later build. We've adjusted the baseline for future appropriations. Additionally, we've saved some of our ammunition for the bigger fights later. It will be much harder to reform entitlements. I'm certain we won't get everything we want then either. But are we better off pushing to get as much as we possibly can, or should we just give up because we only got two-thirds of what we wanted? If Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress and the presidency, then I'd understand the outrage! But the simple fact of the matter is that Republicans only control half of one branch of government! Considering that, we've gotten an excellent deal.
If you disagree, please explain a better strategy, both for the short-term and long-term.
Barack has now came one step closer to be our king. Shame on us.
Our Founding Fathers would take us to the wood shed for allowing this great country to come to this.
